A founding member of the Royal Society of Canada, he also acted as its honorary secretary, and in 1892 served as president of the society. He wrote many books political history, some of which were considered references for decades to come. His Parliamentary Procedure and Practice in Canada (Montréal, 1884) is considered a standard work. How Canada is Governed (Toronto, 1895) was a widely used textbook.

修道次第论是由印度莲花戒大师（噶玛拉希拉）于公元8世纪所撰著的一部大乘修道论典；属瑜伽行中观自续派见解。全书共分为上中下三篇；作者以通俗易懂的方式阐述了一个大乘瑜伽行者自始至终该怎样次第修行大乘菩提之道，并且引用了诸多经典教言作为依据来建立正确修道信念。 本书对于藏传佛教影响巨大，以致后来的藏传各派著作中经常会引用到此修道次第论教言。根据宋代印度僧侣施护（？-1017）翻译的《广释菩提心论》（初篇修道次第论中文版）来看，此论不仅在吐蕃广受欢迎，甚至在印度及汉砖佛教界中也是深受重视的。与其他文献不同的是，本书不仅是一本宗教哲理方面的教材，也是一本研究古代 各国各民族间文化交流的参考文献。
