  • - Using Graphic Organizers to Solve and Understand the Toughest Unit Problems in General Chemistry
    av Stephen Demeo
    578,-

This text is a chemistry problem solving resource appropriate for teachers and their students who are enrolled in high school Advanced Placement Chemistry or in a first-year college General Chemistry course. The book incorporates a chemistry problem solving plan, one that uses an innovative graphic organizer strategy. The strategy - successfully evaluated with students - combines problem solving processes with chemical concepts that will allow students to solve the most common and difficult problems encountered in the first year of chemistry. Topical problem solving will focus on limiting reactant stoichiometry, identifying types of chemical reactions, equilibrium, acid-base equilibria, and electrochemistry. Why would this resource be of interest to chemistry students? To be successful (to get into a well known college, medical school, physical therapy or graduate program) often requires that students get an "A" in your pre-requisite Introductory General Chemistry course. To make matters worse, many college professors feel that only a few students should get A grades, and therefore, they give difficult exams that many students fail; this is the weeding out process that every pre-health student is apprehensive about. To succeed in this competitive environment entails not just studying harder or longer, it means re-organizing textbook content so that it is meaningful to the student. This is the first text of its kind to employ a reliable, research-based strategy that incorporates a decision-based visual tool to solve chemistry textbook problems, ones that can make or break a career.

  • - Polish-Jewish History, Culture, Values, and Education Between Paradise and Inferno
av Eyal Lewin & Nitza Davidovitch
    490,-

Warsaw and Jerusalem deals with different aspects of the inherent paradoxes of Jewish-Polish relations. Written by scholars from Israel and from Poland, who study history, culture, education, and politics, this book forms a unique interdisciplinary collage. Thus, it has a twofold advantage: as an academic insight in the field of Jewish studies; and as a social bonder of an academic community that has its representatives in universities in Israel and in Poland. This project is bound to be an inspiring source for scholars of Jewish studies and Jewish history. In college or university classes, the collection of a variety of chapters will aid students who compose their assignments and need brainwave resources in the field. With a contribution to the deep comprehension of the ongoing discourse about historical as well as nowadays relations between Israel - that represents the Jewish people - and Poland, this book will also appeal to institutes that commemorate Jewish community life in Poland, particularly those who concentrate on Holocaust memorial and Holocaust studies. Many of these institutes aim to be centers where life before and after the Holocaust can be studied, and this book certainly falls within the framework of a resource-book for such cause. As opposed to other volumes in this field, this book forms - to a certain extent - a primary source. It talks less about Jewish culture or education from a scholarly examining angle, and prefers to present Jewish culture and education with a broad variety of examples. Additionally, it is highly updated, it tells the full story not only about pre-Holocaust Jewish culture in Poland, but also about current educational projects. All in all, it is not a stand-alone handbook for Jewish-Polish studies; but it can certainly function as an initial source-book for anyone who studies the subject.

  • - Characterisation and Linearisation of Nonlinear Microwave Devices for Wireless Communication Systems
    av Muhammad Akmal Chaudhary
    540,-

The complexity requirements of future wireless communication systems now indeed demand a more general theoretically robust design methodology for nonlinear circuits, such as the power amplifiers. The present design methodology for nonlinear Radio Frequency components and circuits has become a key hindrance in the evaluation, development and testing of modern communication systems. The fundamental nature of this engineering challenge makes it highly unlikely to be addressed within the competitive Radio Frequency industry with short-term profitability, time to market and risk aversion considerations. The book, therefore, includes developing advanced waveform measurement setups, multi-tone measurement techniques, characterization and modelling of nonlinear distortion in microwave power transistors and design of high-power and spectrum-efficient RF power amplifiers for future wireless communication systems. Further enlists the key impediments in Power Amplifier design through the application of waveform engineering to embrace simultaneously efficiency and linearity objectives of power amplifier design as well as investigate the most robust and appropriate behavioral model formulation that includes memory effects.

  • - A Guide to Critical Reading and Argumentation
    av Eamon M Cunningham
    549,-

Understanding Rhetoric: A Guide to Critical Reading and Argumentation is a composition textbook that outlines three essential skills - rhetoric, argument, and source-based writing - geared towards newcomers and advanced students alike. Though comprehensive in its coverage, the book's focus is a simple one: how to move beyond a "gut reaction" while reading to an articulation of what is effective and what is not, while explicitly answering the most important question of "Why?" This text gets at this central concern in two fundamental ways.First, the text teaches composition as a cumulative process, coaching you how to question, challenge, and expand on not just the readings you hold in your hands, but also how to interrogate the internal processes of writing and thinking. The book's blend of composition methods detail the cross-point of product and process to turn reading and writing from a matter of coming up with answers to questions to learning what type of questions need to be asked in the first place. The "right" questions, the text argues, are fundamentally rhetorical in nature.Second, the content of the practice-based chapters is framed into a larger mesh of intellectual history to show how the writing and thinking you are doing today is continuous with a long history of writing instruction that goes back to the ancient world. This book provides equal representation from classical and contemporary theory with the recognition that theory cannot be fully grasped without practice, and practice cannot be fully understood without its theoretical antecedent. After all, you can't write "outside the box" until you know where the box is and what it looks like.

  • - A Guide for Physicians, Medical Students, Nurse Practitioners, and other Healthcare Providers
    av H Thomas Milhorn
    387,-

Primary care providers are often the first, and sometimes the only, point of contact for many patients within the healthcare system. The standard 12-lead electrocardiogram is one of the most common tests obtained and interpreted by primary care providers, with most reading their own recordings and basing clinical decisions on their findings. Primary care providers can achieve proficiency in the interpretation of over 95 percent of all electrocardiogram findings seen in the primary care setting.Although computerized interpretation is widely available, it is considered unreliable in up to 20 percent of the cases, making interpretation by primary care providers an essential skill. This book provides the necessary skills for primary care providers to use in interpreting electrocardiograms, both in their offices and in the emergency departments of their hospitals. This book is an outgrowth of a previous book, Electrocardiography for the Family Physician.

av Sebastian Velassery & Reena Patra

  • - From Knowing to Understanding
    av Patrick M Whitehead
    446,-

In this book, Whitehead argues against the fact-minded orientation of education and the practice of science. It is not that facts are unhelpful, but they have become a substitute for learning (learning is now tantamount to fact memorization). This change handicaps students by eliminating the possibility of creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking; it handicaps science by limiting the kinds of questions that can be asked and where to look for answers; and ultimately puts people out of touch with their experience. The problem is fact-mindedness. Facts are the relics of enlightenment thinking. They represent unbiased and unquestionable truth about our universe. The more you collect, the more you know; the more you know, the more powerful you are; the more powerful you are…. You get the picture. It is a familiar theme from the middle of this past century, and has been described by contemporary physicists, theoretical biologists, continental philosophers, humanistic psychologists, learner-centered teachers, among many, many others. Unfortunately, college students are seldom exposed to these ideas, and have to wait until they reach graduate school before they wonder if their learning experience may have been different. The goal is to make those ideas accessible here by translating the cumbersome, obscure, and turgid expression of these ideas into twenty-first century examples that are more applicable and meaningful for undergraduates and the educated public. It is argued that judgment must always be applied to matters of fact. That is to say, the fact is not the end of the story. That gravity compels bodies does not substantiate itself: it is a way of describing the relationships between bodies. Gravity helps us better understand physical relationships, but by itself and outside of any meaningful context that fact of gravity is useless.

  • - Science, Ethics and Law

  • - A New Perspective on the Study of Irish Drama
    av Fabio Luppi
    540,-

Fathers and Sons at the Abbey Theatre demonstrates how the literary archetype of the clash between fathers and sons and the subsequent depiction of anti-oedipal figures become a major concern for the playwrights writing in a specific and crucial moment of Irish history (1904-1938). The father can be conceived both as a historical / political metaphor as well as a real father in a specific historical and social context. The classical models employed as theoretical tools to nuance the argument--Laius and Oedipus, Ulysses and Telemachus, Aeneas and Anchises, Priam and Hector, Hector and Astyanax--are challenged by the Christian example of Abraham and Isaac, subversively adjusted by Yeats to provide a tragic reading of post-colonial Ireland. All of these pairings provide archetypes for the understanding of complex personal and familial dynamics. The book takes into consideration not only the most famous figures of the Irish National Theatre--as W.B. Yeats, J.M. Synge, Augusta Gregory, and Sean O?Casey?but also overlooked authors such as T.C. Murray, Padraic Colum, Paul Vincent Carroll, Lennox Robinson, Denis Johnston, George Shiels, St. John Ervine, Teresa Deevy. Many commentators have written about the playwrights of the Abbey Theatre, mainly focusing on politics, social classes, Irish identity, cultural issues, and linguistic aspects: no thorough analysis of the clash between generations has been published so far. Those who have tackled the issue have devoted their attention to a single author, or to a single aspect; this study aims to demonstrate that the repeated occurrence of anti-oedipal figures and of the archetype of the clash between fathers and sons?a clear manifestation of the need of emancipation from oppressive authorities and of change in Irish society?must be read as a common phenomenon and as a shared concern. The book is written for people interested in Irish studies, post-colonial studies, and theatre studies.

Anatomy and Physiology is effectively a broad introductory course that requires the student to devote an enormous amount of effort to understand it on even a basic level. While this necessitates time, it can be streamlined in the early stages of one's learning so that the student may understand why he or she is required to invest such a large amount of time into learning - Clinical Applications of Human Anatomy & Physiology is the textbook that accomplishes this.Clinical Applications of Human Anatomy & Physiology is a book that combines both areas of knowledge for a full comprehension of the human body. It is targeted to healthcare students in need of a better understanding of human physiology to combine with their clinical training. The main objective of this book is to elucidate the organization and functioning of the major organs and systems with an emphasis on the applications of this knowledge on the daily clinical routine. One of the main differences of this textbook that sets it apart from others is that it not only provides the information: it also contextualizes it. Every chapter starts introducing a case study that is related to the content that is going to be approached. At the end of the chapter, there is the conclusion of each case study, which presents the final diagnosis showing every step of the process. This context is essential so that, when the student faces this situation in the real-life clinic he or she will be able to deal with it efficiently. Clinical Applications of Human Anatomy & Physiology also has sections of questions to practice the knowledge that was obtained during the chapter, and the answers to each question are explained so no doubts remain after studying. All of this means that Clinical Applications of Human Anatomy & Physiology is a fully rounded book that combines information and practical applications, as well as questions that help the student to understand and retain all the information in a very efficient and effective way. This book has all the information you need to get started on your journey to learning about the human body.

  • - A Game Theory Based Decision Making Guide for Managers
    av Michael O'Brien & Andras Margitay-Becht
    475,-

Current and future managers are regularly confronted with decisions that create risk in the legal environment of business. This book provides a framework for qualifying legal risk and then determining if the legal risk is worth taking. This framework begins by looking at the relationship between the firm, its suppliers, customers, owners, agents, and others in society as a whole to understand specific risks in personal injury, agreements, products, borrowing money, employees, independent contractors, and business entity selection. When the manager is aware of the magnitude of the risk and the likelihood of the risk, the manager is in a strong position to determine if the risk is worth taking. This book uses numerous applications from Game Theory to determine how risks of the firm compare to risks of another firm, an employee, a vendor and a customer.Students of business law will appreciate the black letter legal discussions of civil procedure, torts, contracts, the sale of goods, secured transactions, agency, and business associations with tax implications. Aspiring accounting students will find familiarity with many topics that appear on the AICPA exam. Managers will gravitate toward specific guidance with regard to setting up agreements with customers and vendors, creating effective human relations policies, and mitigating firm risks with regard to internal and external stakeholders. Dozens of managers provided input and experience that found its way into the selection of examples in the book ensuring real-world application for many practical business law problems.

  • - A Reflection on the Philosophical Thoughts of R.C. Pradhan

    490,-

The essays in this book delve into the central theme of R.C. Pradhan's philosophy in particular and the issues in analytic philosophy in general. In analytic tradition, Professor Pradhan's research has been extensively in the area of Wittgenstein's philosophy: philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. While philosophizing the notion of language and mind, Pradhan explores the complexities of the web of life. For him, language neatly binds several aspects of life: the cultural, moral, religious, and scientific. The mind, however, represents the inner world of human experience that involves multiple dimensions of consciousness: the bodily, the vital, the mental, and the spiritual consciousness. Considering the broad spectrum of Pradhan's works, the contributions in this book reflect mainly on the issues concerning the nature of metaphysics, mind, meaning, truth, and values. Language, Mind and Reality, in this regard, is a study on the contemporary trends in analytic philosophy.
