  • - The History of the Empire Forged in the Ancient Near East After Alexander the Great's Death

    148,-

*Includes pictures *Includes ancient accounts of the Seleucid Empire *Includes a bibliography for further reading In 323 BCE, Alexander the Great was on top of the world. Never a man to sit on his hands or rest upon his laurels, Alexander began planning his future campaigns, which may have included attempts to subdue the Arabian Peninsula or make another incursion into India. But fate had other plans for the young Macedonian king. One night, while feasting with his admiral Nearchus, he drank too much and took to bed with a fever. At first, it seemed like the fever was merely a consequence of his excess, and there was not much concern for his health, but when a week had elapsed and there was still no sign of his getting better, his friends and generals began to grow concerned. The fever grew, consuming him to the point that he could barely speak. After two weeks, on June 11, 323 B.C., Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, Hegemon of the League of Corinth, King of Kings, died. On his deathbed, some historians claim that when he was pressed to name a successor, Alexander muttered that his empire should go "to the strongest". Other sources claim that he passed his signet ring to his general Perdiccas, thereby naming him successor, but whatever his choices were or may have been, they were ignored. Alexander's generals, all of them with the loyalty of their own corps at their backs, would tear each other apart in a vicious internal struggle that lasted almost half a century before four factions emerged victorious: Macedonia, the Seleucid Empire in the east, the Kingdom of Pergamon in Asia Minor, and the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. During the course of these wars, Alexander's only heir, the posthumously born Alexander IV, was murdered, extinguishing his bloodline for ever. Despite the infighting among them, one thing Alexander's generals did agree upon was their Hellenistic culture. Most famously, Ptolemy's line firmly established the Hellenistic culture of the Greeks while ruling over Egypt, and by marrying within their family line, the Ptolemaic pharaohs kept their Hellenistic heritage until the very end of Ptolemy's line, which died with Cleopatra in 30 BCE. Although the Seleucid Empire is less well known, Alexander's general Seleucus was no less successful in "Hellenizing" Persia and parts of Asia Minor. The Greek influence is still readily visible in the region thousands of years later. Anthropologists have found that some of the earliest Buddha statues constructed in India bear an uncanny resemblance to Ancient Greek depictions of Apollo, and local legend has it that the wild olive trees that grow in some regions of Afghanistan sprang from the olive seeds that Macedonian soldiers spat out on the march - not to mention the presence of Balkan features such as red hair and blue eyes among a significant amount of the locals there to this day. Legends of Alexander crop up amid the popular mythology of half the world, and while some among the Persian Empire called him "the accursed", it is now widely believed that the story of the prophet Dhul-Qarnayn ("The Two-Horned One") in the Qur'an is a reference to Alexander. For a time, the Seleucids commanded the largest empire in the world as it stretched from the high plains and deserts of what is now Afghanistan in the east to parts of the Levant and Asia Minor in the west. The empire's early kings were strong and shrewd and committed to the ideas of Hellenism as much as holding power and expanding the realm of their empire, but later rulers did not prove as capable. In time, the Seleucid royal house often descended into orgies of violence which were driven by ambitious men and women. Despite its troubles and its sheer size and scope, the Seleucid Empire lasted for several centuries, and it would not truly reach its end until the heyday of Rome. As a result, the Seleucid Empire managed to leave an indelible mark on the region that has lasted to this day.

She selects a young woman from a lesser noble family with no political ties or ambitions, a perfect match for her son's prideful personality. Enter Lady Devereux d'Arcy Allington. Ayoung woman of astounding beauty, Devereux wants nothing to do with Davyss. When Davyss, in protest of the marriage, sends his sword Lespada to the marriage ceremony, Devereux is beyond offended. Cornered, Devereux is forced to marry Lespada because her groom refuses to show up for the ceremony. When Davyss gives in to his curiosity and meets his wife for the first time, he is overwhelmed with her beauty. Roughly consummating the marriage, he has set the tone for what both Davyss and Devereux believe will be a loveless, hateful marriage. Though trials and tribulations, Davyss and Devereux's bond only strengthens. A crippled, anxiety-ridden, precocious, apostate youth minister leaves his ministry to become a motel desk clerk in a sometimes tacky / sometimes upscale tourist motel in suburban Orange County. He lumbers around in a full-length walking cast as his fragile leg-bones are resistant to healing. His unkempt red hair is down to his shoulders and his wispy, unsightly beard make him look like outcast hippie. In fact, he is a nerdy Philosophy student at a nearby college. His reactions to the wide range of unsavory characters and upright citizens he's exposed to on this job reveal him to be alternately socially clueless and sometimes socially adept. Ever at war with his work-ethic-oriented employer from Taiwan, and always having to adjust to the odd resident managers he works with, there is no end to the debates, the conflicts and the moments of rapturous joy. It is a window into a shady, questionable, but fully-lived life, the outcome of which history may or may not opt to judge kindly. In a cry for understanding, the author cites the immortal line from the movie "American Hustle: " "You know, sometimes in life, all you have are fucked up, poisonous choices." And even so, the author and the reader are left to guess which of those choices are the least destructive. The protagonist tries his best, and the results are mixed

Rasulullah PBUH is reported to have said: 'Fear the intelligence of a Mu'min, for verily he sees with the noor of Allah Ta'ala' (Tirmizi). The 'Mu'min' referred to in the above Hadith is a true Mu'min - one who is obedient to his Rabb and has recognised his Creator and Sustainer, he is a person of true knowledge and taqwa, he has adorned himself with the akhlaaq of Rasulullah PBUH and his entire life is an embodiment of the Sunnah and, in short, he sincerely fulfils the rights of Allah Ta'ala as well as the servants of Allah Ta'ala. Personalities blessed with the above-mentioned qualities see with the noor of Allah Ta'ala and also speak with the tawfeeq (ability) from Allah Ta'ala. While they are not infallible, their words and statements are almost all the time a reflection of the lessons of the Qur'aan and Hadith and their actions are a practical demonstration and application of the Shari'ah and Sunnah. Thus their statements illuminate the heart and provide guidance. Among the greatest benefits of sincerely reading about their lives and studying their works and statements is that one is imbued with great himmat (courage). Stony hearts are melted and weak hearts are strengthened. Laziness gradually dissipates and the zeal for engaging in ibaadah and refraining from every sin is instilled. One is propelled towards emulating them in their sacrifices for Deen and in becoming the true flag-bearers of Islam. Their lives and words inspire one to strive for improvement and betterment in every facet of life, including ibaadaat, mu'aamalaat (monetary dealings), mu'aasharaat (social life) or akhlaaq (character). There were numerous personalities of this calibre in every era. Among the giants of the recent past were Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas Kandhelwi RA, Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi RA and Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya RA. The legacies of these personalities speak for themselves. A short biography of each of these personalities is included in this booklet, which gives a slight glimpse of their status as well as their works and achievements. May Allah Ta'ala accept this great effort and make it a means of tremendous benefit for the Ummah. Aameen. Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyas Patel

Because when you are fluent in Grief, your grief becomes manageable. When you are fluent in a language, you can move through it more quickly, without the same stumbles and stops of needing to search for each word or phrase. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Author notes: Second novel of Royal Wars series... This e-book does not contain a chapter heading, such like, Chapter One; Chapter Two, etc. Instead, the story unfolds in a numeric calendar date format with current time, daylight or nighttime hours, a set of current weather conditions, and the property location with character activity. I enjoy learning parts and pieces of an unread novel before diving into the content. A person with a royal crown and a royal title inherits a plot of land and a pod of people. However, sometimes, the person with a royal crown and a royal title possesses a royal sword with the vile, nasty intent to grab, conquer, and rule more plots of land and pods of people. Then, the person with a royal crown and a royal title with a royal sword encounter a bigger, meaner, and nastier person with a bigger royal crown and a meaner royal title with a nastier royal sword. Thus, the two royal fools start a civil war over personal greediness and nasty selfishness to acquire more plots of land and pods of peoples, which usually kills the property lines, the fun parties, and the people population. This is a historical fact throughout the world and fun fictional reading at home. I have created my own personal a novel viewing rating system for each one of my books for the curious reader. Rated G for good stuff. Rated PG for pretty good stuff. Rated M for mild stuff. Rated R for really great stuff. Rated V for vile stuff. Rated C for cute stuff. The Prince Wars e-book storyline is Rated R for really great acts of violence including spilled blood and torn guts, strings of cuss words, juicy sexual acts, vile and witty humor, nasty female catfights, and lots of deaths with numerous ghosts. The major character role features a set of seventeen-year-old royal teenagers with some limited royal adult parent or non-royal teacher meeting time interaction. The major scientific breakthrough, each seventeen-year-old royal teenage had been conceived in the mother's womb, then permanently removed, and finally developed into a baby inside a clear glass jar on top of a flat table within the mysterious Pamburg Kingdom, where a community of smart scientists lives. Nine months later, the royal queen comes and collects each mature baby that is supposed to be her infant prince and princess. The place is a future spot on Planet Earth that provides flying airships, lava coated f-bombs, lava colored protection body armor, shaft weapons, and a communication face patch to cuss at your enemy from the safety in your bedroom mattress. Thanks for entering into my imagination! Ela Mature entertainment... A royal tale of flight, fight or fancy... Royal Wars is a story of love and hate; princesses and princes, shafts and swords, power and submission; greed and gift; life and death. Between the two Great Oceans, there is a large continent which is unnamed and filled with numerous individual kingdoms that make up the Confederation. The Kingdom of the Sun The Kingdom of the Land The Kingdom of the Wind The Kingdom of the Sand The Kingdom of the Fire The Kingdom of the Snow The Kingdom of the Lakes However, there is a plot of fertile and rich land which is named the Pamburg Kingdom that is surrounded by a range of mountains, the Delta water, and a pair of crystal gates where no comes in and no one comes out. Within the Confederation lands, a gang of young seventeen-year-old royals are attending the last few weeks at the Royal Academy, selecting a mate for life and starting a new career path as an adult royal of the inherited kingdom. Except, a few royal teens and their royal parents possess a set of nasty, greedy, mental thought processes which are secretly pondering a new violent adventure that might lead to a new leader, if the various plots are played out correctly.

There are at least 43 references to the blood of Christ in the New Testament. It's a vital subject. Yet, nowadays, there seems to be a decreasing interest in preaching about it. Indeed, it seems that some churches, in their ill-advised attempts to make Christianity more palatable, have all but removed the blood from their 'gospel.' But, as others from previous generations have noted, a bloodless gospel is both a useless and a hopeless gospel. In fact, a bloodless gospel is no gospel at all."In a day and age when 'certain men crept in unawares' to erroneously boast a cross-less, bloodless, Christ-less gospel, Miles McKee sets the biblical record straight with his exposition of the blood of Christ and its eternal power, its priceless value, its infinite glory and so much more." -Jon J. The meeting took place on August 9, 1941. World War II was in its second year, the British had won the Battle of Britain, but were still encircled by German U-Boats, and the British fleet was being decimated in the North Atlantic. In North Africa, a contest of armor was underway as Axis and Allied armies fought for control of Egypt, while Britain and her Commonwealth allies stood alone against the mighty German Wehrmacht. The British desperately needed more U.S. armaments and supplies, but most importantly, for the U.S. to throw its lot in with the Allies and join the war. In January of that year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn into office for his third term, realizing at last that U.S. isolationism was no longer a practical policy in a rapidly changing world. Roosevelt made no secret of his support for Britain and China, but grounds for bringing the United States into the war would not fully come until December 7, 1941, when the Japanese launched their infamous surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt, however, pictured a very different post-war world than his British counterpart, Winston Churchill. When he and Churchill met at what came to be known as the Atlantic Conference, Churchill's pleas for U.S. manpower and aid were accepted, but only under clear conditions. If the United States was to come to the aid of Britain, it would be for the purpose of defeating the Germans and the Japanese and not to support the insupportable institutions of empire. Britain and, by extension, France and Portugal, the only remaining major European shareholders in foreign empire, would have to commit to decolonization as a basic prerequisite of substantial U.S. assistance. Churchill, a vocal and forceful proponent of empire and a man of the generation that had conquered the world, did not receive this news well. On the other side of the world, British and allied European Asian colonies lay very much in the path of the Japanese imperial march into Southeast Asia. However, as the inevitability of war grew daily, the nationalist movement in India was also beginning to gather pace. Without India and Indian manpower, war with Japan would be lost before it could begin. The Indians in a sense could hold the British hostage, and ultimately, in exchange for Indian cooperation in the war, the British would first have to commit to a post-war independence process. Churchill wished to offer no encouragement to the Indians in this objective, nor to any other restive colonial territory encouraged to do the same, but in the end, he had no choice. In a somber ceremony held on August 14, 1941, he added his signature alongside Roosevelt's to a document that came to be known as the Atlantic Charter. Implicit in this declaration was a "New World Order," under which European colonialism would end, and independence, sovereignty, and self-determination would be basic rights for all people and nations. It was indeed a New World Order, the founding of a new age, but perhaps its most salient feature was less the advent of universal freedom than the decline of Britain as the leading world power and the emergence of the United States in its place.

Intimacy is where Brother Tagoe takes us in this well written book: Beyond the Veil. Among other images and analogies herein, Alfred takes us on a sacred journey through Scripture by looking at the type and shadow of the Old Testament Tabernacle of Moses. This movable structure contained three principle areas; the Outer Court, the Inner Court, and the Most Holy place (Holy of Holies). With amazing connectivity, Alfred is our tour guide for the expanded meaning these three areas of this Old Testament icon and at every point he relates it to our spiritual journey with Jesus. Herein, the journey becomes the destination and intimacy with our Lord is the result. Dr. Scott T.
