The study of Islam¿s origins from a rigorous historical and social science perspective is still wanting. At the same time, a renewed attention is being paid to the very plausible pre-canonical redactional and editorial stages of the Qur'an, a book whose core many contemporary scholars agree to be formed by various independent writings in which encrypted passages from the OT Pseudepigrapha, the NT Apocrypha, and other ancient writings of Jewish, Christian, and Manichaean provenance may be found. Likewise, the earliest Islamic community is presently regarded by many scholars as a somewhat undetermined monotheistic group that evolved from an original Jewish-Christian milieu into a distinct Muslim group perhaps much later than commonly assumed and in a rather unclear way. The following volume gathers select studies that were originally shared at the Early Islamic Studies Seminar. These studies aim at exploring afresh the dawn and early history of Islam with the tools of biblical criticism as well as the approaches set forth in the study of Second Temple Judaism, Christian, and Rabbinic origins, thereby contributing to the renewed, interdisciplinary study of formative Islam as part and parcel of the complex processes of religious identity formation during Late Antiquity.

It explores the current AI offerings and gives a vision of the fast-moving developments in this area including the many solutions that are expected to revolutionize the way financial and commodity markets will operate in the future.

Traditionally, the history of Ancient Greek literature ends with Antiquity: after the fall of Rome, the literary works in ancient Greek generally belong to the domain of the Byzantine Empire. However, after the Byzantine refugees restored the knowledge of Ancient Greek in the west during the early humanistic period (15th century), Italian scholars (and later their French, German, Spanish colleagues) started to use Greek, a purely literary language that no one spoke, for their own texts and poems. This habit persisted with various ups and downs throughout the centuries, according to the development of Greek studies in each country. The aim of this anthology - the first one of this kind - is to give a selective overview of this kind of humanistic poetry in Ancient Greek, embracing all major regions of Europe and trying to concentrate on remarkable pieces of important poets. The ultimate goal of the book is to shed light on an important and so far mostly neglected aspect of the European heritage.

Signaturen auf Kunstwerken zeichnen sich durch Vielseitigkeit aus. Sie bestehen aus Buchstaben und haben zugleich bildliche Qualitäten. Die Beiträge des Buches untersuchen u.a. am Beispiel von Albrecht Dürer, El Greco und Rembrandt Signierpraktiken aus Mittelalter und Neuzeit. Sie diskutieren Aspekte von Autorschaft und Künstleridentität, das intermediale Zusammenspiel von Schrift und Bild und den intellektuellen Horizont von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern in verschiedenen kulturellen Milieus Europas. Dabei wird die technische Ausführung von Signaturen ebenso in den Blick genommen wie die Verwendung verschiedener Schrifttypen. Durch die Verbindung von kunsthistorischen, philologischen und restauratorischen Fragestellungen werden neue Perspektiven auf Signaturen auf Kunstwerken erschlossen.

Das Arbeitsheft bietet eine grundlegende, auf Studierende der Facher Franzosisch, Italienisch und Spanisch zugeschnittene Einfuhrung in die neuere generative Syntax. Ausgehend von der Prinzipien- und Parametertheorie (Chomsky 1981) werden vor allem die Neuerungen des generativen Modells im Rahmen des sog. Minimalistischen Programms (Chomsky 1995, 2000, 2005) behandelt. So hat der Minimalismus u. a. zu Uberlegungen gefuhrt, die mit anderen modernen Grammatiktheorien wie etwa der Optimalitatstheorie kompatibel sind. Der Band fasst wichtige Etappen in der Entwicklung der neueren Syntaxtheorie wahrend der letzten 20 Jahre zusammen und diskutiert die Neuerungen in Bezug auf ihre Operationalisierbarkeit bei der Analyse romanischer Daten. Behandelt werden Themenfelder wie Wortstellung und Informationsstruktur, Pronominalkonstruktionen sowie die Stellung der Adjektive. Weiterhin werden die Antisymmetriehypothese (Kayne 1994) und die von Rizzi (1997) vorgeschlagene Feinstruktur der Linken Satzperipherie diskutiert. Die Darstellung orientiert sich an Konzepten, die in der universitaren Lehre erprobt wurden, und erlaubt sowohl die Verwendung des Bandes in Anfangerkursen als auch die vertiefende Nutzung durch Fortgeschrittene.
