Deutsch-englische Ausgabe Der Epochenbegriff "Neue Sachlichkeit" wurde zu einem Synonym für den kulturellen Aufbruch der 1920er-Jahre und die in der Kunst, aber auch in Architektur, Design, Fotografie oder Literatur zu beobachtenden Rationalität und sachlichen Präzision. Gustav F. Hartlaub prägte diesen Begriff 1925 mit einer Ausstellung, die namensgebend wurde. 100 Jahre danach soll die in der Kunsthalle Mannheim gezeigte Schau kritisch hinterfragt und digital rekonstruiert werden. Neben Werken zentraler Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Max Beckmann, Otto Dix und George Grosz werden auch übersehene Positionen, vor allem von Künstlerinnen wie Anita Rée und Lotte Laserstein, vorgestellt. Ausgeweitet wird der Blick auch topografisch, etwa in die Schweiz und nach Italien, sowie zeitlich bis in die 1930er- und frühen 1940er-Jahre. Die Publikation verspricht ein visuelles Eintauchen in eine prägende Stilepoche und gibt Einblick in den aktuellen Forschungsstand über zentrale Fragen der Neuen Sachlichkeit. Erwin Panofskys Behauptungen in Renaissance and Renascences in Western Art (1960), dass sich in der Kunst und Architektur der Epoche ein neues Geschichtsbewusstsein und eine Suche nach einem "all'antica"-Idiom zeigt, werden auch heute noch regelmäßig aufgegriffen. Die Schriftenreihe Notizen zu Uecker macht die Forschungsergebnisse der Stipendiat*innen des GUI der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Mit Nick Böhnkes Untersuchung Berührung im Entzug. Struktur, Temporalität und Haptik des malerischen Handelns an den frühen Strukturreliefs Günther Ueckers für Band 3 der Reihe wird der Begriff des ,Handelns' um malerische Ansätze des Künstlers bis in die 1960er-Jahre erweitert. Die Bedeutung der kolonialen Vergangenheit für die Gegenwart bewegt derzeit die öffentlichen Debatten wie kaum ein anderes Thema. Dabei geraten zunehmend die Regionen fernab der Metropolen in den Blick, schließlich reichten die kolonialen Verbindungslinien bis in das dörfliche Kolonialwarengeschäft. Der Sammelband fragt nach den Spuren der kolonialen Vergangenheit im Lokalen und zeichnet dabei auch Thüringens Verflechtungen in kolonialen Strukturen im Globalen nach. Die Beiträge erstrecken sich von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die Transformationszeit ab 1990.
