Homeland, Exile, Imagined Homelands are features of the modern experience and relate to the cultural and historical dilemmas of loss, nostalgia, utopia, travel, longing, and are central for Jews and others. This book is an exploration into a world of boundary crossings and of desired places and alternate identities, into a world of adopted kin and invented allegiances.

The work draws conclusions of the fourth conference in a series on the subject of "too big to fail", hosted by the Institute for Law and Finance at Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main on April 23, 2018. It presents the views of key European Union officials as well as senior executives from the financial sector on where Europe stands in this crucial area.

Im Zuge von Kanonisierungstendenzen wird 'der Artusroman' heute gerne auf die Werke Chrétiens und weniger anderer 'Klassiker' begrenzt, abgesehen von einzelnen Texten, die zyklisch von der Forschung wiederentdeckt werden. Zu einem modernen 'Mythos' konnten Artus und der Artusstoff aber nur werden, weil die Artustradition über Jahrhunderte hinweg hoch aktiv weiterlebte und die Texte immer wieder neu rezipiert, transformiert, umgeschrieben und der aktuellen Zeit angepasst wurden. So entstand eine Fülle von arthurischen Texten und Artusnotationen. Während bislang zumeist die Erforschung der Artusrezeption im 19./20. Jahrhundert und mediävistische Untersuchungen zur mittelalterlichen Réécriture unverbunden nebeneinander standen, nimmt dieser Band beides in den Blick. Als Bindeglied dient die in der Forschung oft ausgeblendete Artusrezeption in der Frühen Neuzeit. Unter den Schlagwörtern 'réécriture' und 'Rezeption' werden Prozesse der Übertragung, Bearbeitung und Fortschreibung einzelner Romane sowie verschiedene Formen der Rezeption einzelner Figuren, Motive oder Erzählschemata, aber auch ganzer Romane analysiert und historisch kontextualisiert, um zu erklären, was Artus zu einem 'Mythos' macht.

Wie kann der Mensch in seiner Vieldeutigkeit als Naturwesen, kulturell-geistige Person und als Inhaber normativer Ansprüche auf nicht-reduktionistische Weise verstanden und in der Welt verortet werden? Diese Frage verbindet die Neue Ontologie Nicolai Hartmanns und die Philosophischen Anthropologien Max Schelers, Helmuth Plessners etc. Der vorliegende Band unternimmt den Versuch, beide Denkrichtungen miteinander in Beziehung zu setzen. Hierzu werden wesentliche Momente der Philosophie Nicolai Hartmanns mit Denkfiguren Plessners, Schelers und anderer verglichen, so etwa die Fragen nach dem Selbstverständnis der Philosophie, nach der Spezifik organischer Individuen, nach der personalen Geistsphäre sowie nach Wertbindungen menschlicher Individuen.

This volume provides a new context for women's writing from the seventeenth through the end of the nineteenth century, highlighting the significant role of the parsonage and the parson himself for women's education in those centuries. Cindy K. Renker and Susanne Bach's collection of essays is the first of its kind on the education, lives, and works of highly accomplished daughters of Protestant clergymen. Since this volume only represents a limited number of women raised and educated in parsonages, it will surely encourage more investigation of other women writers, translators, educators, etc. with similar backgrounds. Moreover, since this book takes a comparative and transnational approach by focusing on different regions of Europe and different centuries. This collection of essays is thus aimed at scholars in multiple fields such as British literature, German studies, gender studies, the history of women's education, and social and cultural history.

How is affective experience produced in the cinema? And how can we write a history of this experience? By asking these questions, this study by Hauke Lehmann aims at rethinking our conception of a critical period in US film history - the New Hollywood: as a moment of crisis that can neither be reduced to economic processes of adaption nor to a collection of masterpieces. Rather, the fine-grained analysis of core films reveals the power of cinematic images to affect their audiences - to confront them with the new. The films of the New Hollywood redefine the divisions of the classical genre system in a radical way and thereby transform the way spectators are addressed affectively in the cinema. The study describes a complex interplay between three modes of affectivity: suspense, paranoia, and melancholy. All three, each in their own way, implicate spectators in the deep-seated contradictions of their own feelings and their ways of being in the world: their relations to history, to society, and to cultural fantasy. On this basis, Affect Poetics of the New Hollywood projects an original conception of film history: as an affective history which can be re-written up to the present day.

Thinking in Translation posits the Hebrew Bible as the fulcrum of the thought of Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929), underpinning a unique synthesis between systematic thinking and biblical interpretation. Addressing a lacuna in Rosenzweig scholarship, the book offers a critical evaluation of his engagement with the Bible through a comparative study of The Star of Redemption and his Bible translation with Martin Buber. The book opens with Rosenzweig's rejection of German Idealism and fascination with the sources of Judaism. It then analyzes the unique hermeneutic approach he developed to philosophy and scripture as a symbiosis of critique and cross-fertilization, facilitated by translation. An analysis of the Star exposes Rosenzweig's employment of translation in grafting biblical verses unto the philosophical discussion. It is followed by a reading that demonstrates how his Bible translation reflects an attempt to re-valorize the Tanakh as a distinctively Jewish scripture, over and against Christian appropriations. Thinking in Translation recasts Rosenzweig's life's work as a project of melding Judaism and modernity in an attempt to secure their spiritual and intellectual survival.

Tractates Sanhedrin and Makkot belong together as one tractate, covering procedural law for panels of arbitration, communal rabbinic courts (in bare outline) and an elaborate construction of hypothetical criminal courts supposedly independent of the king¿s administration. Tractate Horaiot, an elaboration of Lev. 4:1¿26, defines the roles of High Priest, rabbinate, and prince in a Commonwealth strictly following biblical rules.

Das Buch mochte einerseits wichtige Ergebnisse der Fremdwortforschung zum Deutschen zusammenfassen und entwickeln, indem Phonologie, Orthographie, Flexion und Wortbildung einschl. der Lehnwortbildung fur die Grakolatinismen, Gallizismen und Anglizismen auf dem Hintergrund der Wortgrammatik des Kernwortschatzes dargestellt werden. Auf diese Weise wird es moglich, semantische und vor allem strukturelle Fremdheitsmerkmale zu identifizieren, so dass auch Einzelheiten von Integrationsprozessen in Richtung Kernwortschatz zuganglich werden. Innerhalb dieser Systematik kommt es darauf an, die Charakteristika der einzelnen Groklassen von Fremdwortern herauszustellen. Die systematische Beschreibung macht den zweiten Hauptteil des Buches aus. Im ersten Hauptteil werden ebenso ausfuhrlich die Hauptthemen des offentlichen Fremdwortdiskurses und seine historischen Grundlagen abgehandelt. Dazu gehort einmal die Geschichte der Entlehnungen aus den wichtigsten Gebersprachen Englisch, Franzosisch, Italienisch, Lateinisch und Griechisch. Dazu gehort weiter die Rolle des Deutschen als Nehmersprache. Spracheinstellungen, Purismus, Verdeutschungs- und Eindeutschungsbemuhungen mit ihren Materialisierungen in Worterbuchern kommen zur Sprache. Ein besonderes Anliegen besteht in der Vermittlung beider Hauptteile: Standiger Begleiter der Darstellung bleibt die Frage, was in der Grammatik von Fremdwortern aus ihrer Geschichte und Funktionalitat aufgehoben ist.
