This volume examines the different and sometimes contradictory approaches of four UN human rights committees to the concept of religion. Drawing on critical perspectives from religious studies, the book combines a genealogical assessment of the role of religion in international law with a detailed textual study of the reporting practice of the committees monitoring racial discrimination, civil and political rights, women's rights, and children's rights. Arsheim argues that the role of religion within the rights traditions monitored by the committees varies to the extent that their recommendations risk contradicting one another, thereby undermining their credibility and potential to bring about real change on the ground: Where some committees view religion singularly as a core individual right, others see religion partly as an inherent threat to the realization of other rights, but also as a potent social force to be reckoned with. In order to remedy this situation, Arsheim proposes the publication of a joint general comment by all the committees, spelling out their approach to the role of religion in the implementation of human rights.

The Cinepoetics book series aims at a theoretical and analytical reconceptualization of the discursivity of audiovisual images. The focus is not on the circulation of media representations but on the modes of this circulation: How do audiovisual images as figurations of media experience relate to other audiovisual images? What does it mean to describe different modes of audiovisual experience and recursivity as forms of cinematic thinking? From this perspective, the series' volumes provide analyses of the aesthetic dimension, historical function and cultural significance of their subjects, making the poetic logic of audiovisual images accessible to an interdisciplinary audience. Es existieren zahlreiche Abhandlungen uber wirkmachtige, gemeinhin als "e;magisch"e; bezeichnete Texte, zum Beispiel auf Schalen, Gemmen und Amuletten unterschiedlicher Kulturen. Jedoch spielt die Bebilderung der genannten Artefakte in der Analyse oftmals nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. Dabei lassen sich an den bildlichen Darstellungen ebenso wie an den Texten selbst Phanomene des Kulturtransfers nachvollziehen. Zudem stellt sich die Frage, wie der Zusammenhang zwischen Bild und Text zu bewerten ist: Stehen sie in intrinsischer Beziehung und bedingen gemeinsam die Wirkung des Artefakts? Oder bieten sie vielmehr zwei "e;Lesarten"e; nur eines Sachverhalts? Der vorliegende Band thematisiert diese und weitere Fragen exemplarisch an Artefakten sowie Handbuchern, religions- und kulturubergreifend, von der Spatantike bis in die fruhe Neuzeit und aus dem gesamten Mittelmeerbereich. Dazu zahlen nicht nur Gemmen, Papyrus- und arabische Papieramulette, sondern auch Manuale mit Anleitungen zu "e;magischen"e; Handlungen. Mit verschiedenen Interpretations- wie Losungsansatzen versuchen sich die Beitrage der Frage nach dem Spannungsverhaltnis zwischen magischem Text und Bild zu nahern und dieses von transkultureller Warte aus zu betrachten.

Die historische Textsortenforschung ist fur das Deutsche ein noch relativ unerschlossenes Feld und so sind bisher nur einige wenige historische Textsorten erfasst und beschrieben. Mit den medizinischen Gutachten nimmt diese Studie eine historische Textsortenklasse in den Blick, die schon im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung fur die arztliche Kommunikation war. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung sind gangige, gegenwartsbezogene textlinguistische Beschreibungsansatze, die fur sprachhistorische Kontexte modifiziert und um wichtige pragmatische Kategorien erweitert werden. Als besonders fruchtbar erweist sich die starkere Berucksichtigung metakommunikativer Wissensbestande wie sie sich in Rhetoriklehrbuchern, Textsortenanleitungen und Textsortenbenennungen manifestieren. Auf der Basis dieses breit angelegten Analysemodells werden die entsprechenden Textsorten - Consilia, Gerichtsgutachten und Sektionsberichte - kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch sowie hinsichtlich der fur sie typischen sprachlichen Merkmale untersucht und beschrieben. Die Studie bietet damit nicht nur fur Sprach- und Medizinhistoriker, sondern auch fur Kulturwissenschaftler einen interessanten Einblick in die medizinische Fachkommunikation dieser Zeit.
