That's Life is a compilation of previously published written works by Edward Shaw. This volume is a collection of articles that examines how the COVID-19 pandemic affected and intersected with various Southeast Asian contexts in the broad areas of migration, education and demographic policy. At the height of the pandemic from 2020‒22, the resulting restrictions to international travel, ensuing nationwide lockdowns and eventual economic crises formed part of what many commentators referred to as a "new normal". Apart from being a global health crisis, the pandemic disrupted and transformed the experience of everyday life at all levels of society, where many of its effects are now likely irreversible. In particular, the impact of the pandemic certainly affected the most vulnerable individuals and communities throughout the region, especially in countries that are experiencing rapid ageing such as Singapore and Thailand. Examples of the most affected include low-wage migrant workers, the disabled and the children of impoverished families. For many who were already living in a state of precarity, the structural "side-effects" of the pandemic were at times more deadly than the coronavirus itself as it often negatively impacted livelihood, social-emotional ties and overall well-being. At the same time, the "new normal" has further created conditions that raise the likelihood of occupational precarity even for long-term professionals within established fields like education. In other words, few experienced the COVID-19 pandemic without encountering both tangible and intangible challenges, regardless of where one was situated. Hence, by merging the theme of precarity with that of the pandemic's undeniable and exacerbating effects, this volume hopes to establish a useful platform to reflect and learn from a range of scholarly views and to contribute to new knowledge and inform policymaking in Southeast Asian societies. Non solo dunque a partire dal celeberrimo trattato Il bello musicale [Vom Musikalisch-Schönen], ma anche dalle recensioni e scritti critici di cui è recentemente apparsa l'edizione integrale ad opera di Dietmar Strauß (Eduard Hanslick - Sämtliche Schriften. Historisch-kritische Ausgabe).Dopo una prima parte in cui vengono discussi aspetti critici e storici, con riferimenti al concetto di forma in Kant e Schiller, nonché al formalismo di Herbart e Zimmermann, si passa ad individuare ed esaminare i singoli caratteri della forma musicale e i vari significati che è possibile attribuirvi in base ai diversi contesti in cui Hanslick se ne serve. In che senso nell'opera musicale si può distinguere una forma da un contenuto? Perché Hanslick dà fondamentale rilevanza alla prima? Esistono leggi nella costruzione formale del materiale sonoro? Queste sono solo alcune delle fondamentali questioni rispetto alle quali si cerca di definire la posizione di Hanslick, ricostruendola sia a partire dalle sue riflessioni teoriche, sia dai numerosi contributi critici e recensioni alle esecuzioni a cui in prima persona aveva assistito in qualità di prezioso testimone dell'Ottocento musicale viennese.

Il volume presenta il complesso fenomeno religioso dello gnosticismo, sorto nei primi secoli dell'era volgare. Tale fenomeno sviluppa spunti teologici e antropologici di tipo dualistico, derivati dalla cultura ellenistica, innestandoli nell'alveo del primo cristianesimo. Esauritosi verso il V secolo d.C., ha però continuato a sopravvivere in diverse forme fino a che venne estirpato nel Catarismo medievale. Alcune idee gnostiche, ancora ai nostri giorni, sembrano sopravvivere in alcune espressioni religiose, nella cultura, nella letteratura e nel cinema. Nella parte finale il volume affronta alcune delle tematiche tipiche dell'ideologia gnostica, accompagnandole con esempi testuali tratti dalla letteratura prodotta dagli gnostici (testimoniata in particolare nei ritrovamenti di Nag Hammadi, in Egitto) e da quella dei loro avversari.

Cette exploration ou odyssée téméraire par la réflexion sur l'existence, et donc conséquente à l'observation, l'admiration et la curiosité, ne saurait laisser âme indifférente, car suscitant l'introspection avec une profusion de questionnements et de recherches, dans le dessein de saisir un pan de la destinée humaine, des sociétés et de la nature. Convenons, seules les actions individuelles et collectives conscientes et responsables, donc en harmonie avec les lois de la nature et de la crainte révérencielle, déterminent les espoirs, c'est-à-dire, les véritables solutions idoines et les finalités de ces contemplations.
