Cutita was born in Puerto Rico. At two and half years old, she learned that she could add "ito" or "ita" to the end of a Spanish word to call something "small." A large cow was called "vaca"; a small cow was called "vaquita." When Cutita arrived in Tennessee and met Spike, a black and white spotted dog, she thought he was a small cow, so called him "vaquita." Her brother tried to correct her, but she was insistent. A year later, Cutita's mother showed her photograph. Cutita saw that she had grown, but Spike had not. With her mother's help, she finally understood that Spike's spots did not make him a small cow. Dolores D. Bennett was born in the Philippines. She wrote articles about anything that inspired her to think or made her laugh. However, the demands of being a teacher made her put writing aside. After retiring as a GED teacher, she planned to go to Spain as a missionary in March 2020, but Covid-19 cancelled her plans. Being quarantined gave her the opportunity to write her biography, His Hand on Me, which was published in 2020. In 2021, she republished her first children's book: The Big Black Feather, and wrote five new ones: The Wise Hen (Prequel to The Big Black Feather), The Hen's Dream (Sequel to The Big Black Feather), PupPup the Bully, Stories of Boogies Friends and Cutita & Vaquita.

Hildie assured Little D that her sadness would go away over time, but the fun times she'd shared with Spike would always be remembered.
