Over half of young people between 18-24 in the UK currently identify as "not exclusively heterosexual." Yet a sizable majority of Christian Churches in the UK, US and Australia still refuse to acknowledge the immutability of most LGBT identities or to engage with the lived realities of LGBT people. This apathy - and sometimes downright hostility - creates a toxic environment for some of our most vulnerable young people, leading to isolation, despair and sometimes, tragically, suicide. This poses the question, does the Church have blood on its hands? Blood on its Hands? should serve as a wake-up call to take LGBT identities and LGBT mental health seriously, to avoid some of the tragedies highlighted in this book. It is intended to be used as an aid to discussion in worship communities.Dr Carol A Shepherd is a published academic and trade author, whose works include Bisexuality in the Western Christian Church (Palgrave) and Bi: the Way, Pastoring Bisexual Christians in Europe (EYP). An experienced and engaging public speaker, Carol can be booked for talks and workshops at www.easyyoke.org
Gay physio Brooksy hopes to entice club captain Nathan out of the closet and onto his massage table. But when a sex abuse scandal hits the club and a youth player is found dead in the club showers, Brooksy fears the chances of Nathan coming out are zero. One reviewer comments: At the time of writing, only eight male club footballers have come out as LGBT+. Shepherd skilfully puts this issue mid-field in this fast-paced and timely novel. What results is an easy-to-read and much needed look at the taboo of homosexuality in club football. Containing strong themes of anger, self-hatred, mental ill health, and prejudice, this one is worth the read.
Dr Carol A Shepherd is a global expert on bisexual Christian identities. Over half of the total LGB population identifies as bisexual, less than a third as gay and less than a fifth as lesbian. Proportionally, it would not be unreasonable to rearrange the letters in LGBT to spell BGLT. Yet there is overwhelming silence in our churches around Europe on the subject of bisexuality, despite slow but increasing acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex marriage in many countries. This silence has a devastating effect on the mental health of bisexual people. In Bi: The Way, Carol Shepherd charts the history and science behind bisexuality and challenges the stereotypes around bisexual people. Bisexual Christians across Europe are given a voice, producing rich data that should be of use to pastors and supporters of LGBT+ people for years to come. Bi: The Way is the missing book on the LGBT Christian bookshelf. Bi: the Book!
