Experience Life Among the World's Northernmost PeopleThroughout history, few cultures have seemed more mysterious than the native hunter-gatherer societies of the far north. These nomadic people often thrived in unforgiving conditions on frozen, treeless terrain above the Arctic Circle, where mere survival was an everyday challenge. Known among themselves simply as the People, the Inuit men and women that Europeans called "Eskimos" existed for centuries in harmony with the unforgiving natural world around them; when times were good they prospered on natural bounties, and when times were bad they overcame the bleakest of conditions just to make it through. Prior to their contact with many other Europeans in the early twentieth century, Danish explorer Peter Freuchen befriended and lived among the Inuit in Greenland. He studied their language and ways of life firsthand, eventually marrying and having children with an Inuit woman there. Since they were a people with no written language, Freuchen's captivating observations offered the rest of the world some of the earliest eyewitness accounts of "Eskimo" lifestyle. Before his account was published, Western writers often romanticized the life of the Inuit; where others pictured a near-mythological life of hardship in an inhospitable landscape of icy bleakness, Freuchen revealed the tapestry of a rich and storied culture set in a world of raw beauty. Examining pre-westernized Inuit societies in Greenland, northern Canada, and Alaska, Freuchen's Book of the Eskimos is a rare and uniquely personal portrait of the indigenous people of the Arctic. Brimming with fascinating information, color, humor, and warmth, this classic chronicle of the everyday lives and customs of these resourceful communities and families offers a completely engaging immersion into a foreign land and an excellent introduction to the tenacious people living at the top of the world. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1648372708).

The Classic Study of Cognition by Two Pioneers of Artificial Intelligence First published in 1972, this monumental work develops and defends the authors' information processing theory of human reasoning. Human reasoners, they argue, can be modeled as symbolic "information processing systems" (IPSs), abstracted entirely from physiological bases. Modeling subjects with IPSs yields predictive theories of their problem-solving behavior and performance, and psychological insight into their heuristics and methods.Newell and Simon's previous epoch-making collaborations included the General Problem Solver, the Logic Theorist, and the Information Processing Language. This book is a careful application of those ideas from artificial intelligence - the ideas of AI's first golden age - to cognitive psychology. The authors first develop the formal theory of information processing systems. They then report studies of three symbolic reasoning tasks, and analyze that data using the information processing paradigm. In the final section, they state their comprehensive theory of human problem-solving. The success of the models of cognition given in Human Problem Solving was a major piece of evidence for the physical symbol system hypothesis, which Newell and Simon would first state a few years later. Newell went on to co-develop the Soar cognitive architecture, and Simon to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics. The two jointly received the Turing Award in 1975 for the research program of which Human Problem Solving was the culmination. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1635617928).

Explore the Essential Teachings of the Ancients Serving as a theological basis for major world religions such as Christianity and Islam, the Hermetica has had an influence on Western culture that cannot be overstated. The collection of Greek texts-attributed by some to the legendary Hellenistic god Hermes Trismegistus (literally, Hermes the thrice great) in second-century Alexandria-is said to represent the divine philosophical and mystical practices of the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt (around 3000 BCE). In this creative, approachable introduction to the central ideas and essential teachings of the Hermetica, authors Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy offer a profoundly inspiring gateway to understanding and appreciating the profound wisdom of the ancients. Following an enlightening historical overview of the material contained in the massive Corpus Hermeticum, Freke and Gandy present a diverse sampling of Hermetic thought with extracts of Hermes's beautiful, poetic writings on topics including creation, the cosmos, human culture, prophecies, the Zodiac, incarnation of the soul, death, and immortality, and others. Along with each free-verse extract, the authors provide helpful commentary that explains the original text and places it in context for modern readers. An invaluable resource for initiates in Hermetic studies or anyone seeking a deeper understanding of human spirituality, mysticism, and consciousness, this book belongs on the bookshelves of any who seek a greater awareness of humanity's place in the cosmos. Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy are also the celebrated authors of The Jesus Mysteries, Jesus and the Lost Goddess, and The Laughing Jesus, as well as many other books on world spirituality.
