In Hammer Goes to Hell, Foster utilises never seen before materials held in the Hammer Script Archive to present a new perspective on one of Britain's most famous production studios. While Hammer Films has been extensively researched, the significant amount of creative and economic labour that went into over 100 unmade projects at the company have yet to be recognised accordingly. Using primary materials such as screenplays and correspondence, Hammer Goes to Hell examines the production contexts of an eclectic range of Hammer's unmade films, ranging from Nessie to Kali Devil Bride of Dracula. Using Hammer as a case study, this book represents a significant academic intervention by being the first sustained industry study to primarily use unmade projects. Offering a fresh perspective on this legendary film studio, Foster argues for the importance and sustained study of unmade films. Argues that nationalism and ethnic conflict can be used as strategies to achieve power and influence With a new introductory theoretical chapter, the book collects thoroughly revised nine articles and book chapters based on Pål Kolstø's thirty years of study of nationalism and ethnic conflict in post-Soviet states. Kolstø examines how the drivers behind ethnic conflicts in the non-Russian republics were not only struggle for collective identities but also more mundane interests, such as competition for jobs and positions. He also analyses the transformations of Russian nationalism, both among the ruling elite and in the opposition, with a particular focus on the use of symbolism. Exploring nationalism as a pervasive feature of politics in the modern world, Kolstø argues that both state leaders and 'ethnic entrepreneurs' employ nationalist rhetoric and stratagems to further their political agendas and achieve particular goals. He examines some of the ways this is used as a political strategy and focuses both on nationalism at the societal level and as a state strategy. Rethinking objectivity and fiction in contemporary philosophy and psychoanalysis - beyond the realism-nominalism divide When it comes to the question of objectivity in current philosophical debates, there is a growing prominence of two opposite approaches: nominalism and realism. By absolutising intersubjectivity, the nominalist approach is moving towards the abandonment of the very notion of truth and objective reality. For its part, the realist approach insists on the category of the object-in-itself as irreducible to any kind of subjective mediation. Despite their seeming mutual exclusiveness, both approaches share a fundamental presupposition, namely, that of a neat separation between the spheres of subjectivity and objectivity as well as between fiction and truth. This collection offers a rethinking of the relationship between objectivity and fiction through engaging with a series of 'objective fictions', including such topics as fetishes, semblances, lies, rumours, sophistry, fantasies and conspiracy theories. It does so through engagement with modern and contemporary philosophical traditions and psychoanalytic theory, with all of these orientations being irreducible to either nominalist or realist approaches. Reinterprets the making of the modern Middle East by studying its borderlands The emergence of the modern Middle East is the result of three complementary historical developments: the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, the institution of British and French control in its stead and the nationalist challenges to this colonial scramble. The introduction of international borders that accompanied this process is commonly portrayed as the drawing of lines in the sand, an artificial partitioning that brought diplomatic closure to an otherwise contested historical space. For the past two decades, insights gained from the burgeoning field of borderlands studies have enabled a new generation of scholars to challenge such popular depictions. Contemporary Thai Horror Film focuses on the most significant and dominant characteristic of Thai cinema throughout its history: the Thai incarnation of the horror genre and its central role in Thailand's film industry. Tracing the development of Thai cinema throughout wider contextual changes, Ainslie explores the influence of audiences and viewing scenarios from previous decades upon this industry today. Most evident in the popular horror genre, close analysis of films demonstrates a specific style of Thai cinema as well as the wider social forces that have shaped Thai cinema as a national industry. Transgressive Art Films offers a holistic approach to the way we consider controversial and extreme cinema - not just as individual or grouped texts for analysis - but as artefacts that ought to be considered within a complex network of social factors. The term 'transgressive art film' refers to a handful of controversial films recuperated each year by the cinematic world as an expansion of film art. The last three decades in Iraqi history can be summarized in these words: dictatorship, war and occupation. After the fall of Saddam's regime Iraqi novelists are not only writing about the occupation and the current disintegration of Iraq but are also revisiting previous wars that devastated their lives. This book examines how recent Iraqi fiction about war depicts the Iraqi subject in its relation to war, coercion, subjugation and occupation. The theoretical medieval concept of the homo sacer, the killable, as defined by Giorgio Agamben is used to explore the lives and the experiences of different war actors such as the soldier, the war deserter, the camp detainee and the suicide bomber depicted in their "e;bare life"e; as men doomed to death in the necropolitical context. War and Occupation in Iraqi Fiction is an exploration of fictional works by a new generation of leading Iraqi authors such as Ali Badr, Shakir Nuri, Najm Wali, Hdiya Hussein and others. It brings to light the overarching continuum in the production of homines sacri in Iraq. Instances of homo sacer under the dictatorship are complemented by new instances found in the camp and under the state of exception of the occupation and the war on terror.
