With COVID-19 in full swing and the world in isolation, we thought of no better time and way to show our thanks than to offer this collection of short fiction for free during the course of the crisis, and at no more than cost for the print book. Please enjoy these stories at no cost, and we hope that the worlds they bring you to is a brighter one. For years, Engen Books has produced an annual collection of the best genre fiction that Atlantic Canada has to offer: the From the Rock series. It has seen tremendous commercial and critical success and we couldn't have done that without two groups: our spectacular writers, and our amazing readers. We've been looking to find a way to thank both for years. From the Rock collections alternate between three main genres: Science-Fiction, Fantasy, and Chillers. This collection contains the best examples of all three, in roughly equal measure. All stories are kept to a PG-13 standard to be as widely accessible as possible. Those who read the series regularly will notice that there are some names that show up again and again. These individuals are known as Rockers: authors who have been included in at least three different collections, and who have proven themselves excellent at each of the main three genres we've challenged them with. They are Ali House, Chantal Boudreau, Jeff Slade, Jon Dobbin, Matthew Daniels, Nicole Little, Paul Carberry, Peter J Foote, Sam Bauer, and, Shannon K Green. Collectively known as the best in genre fiction storytelling in Atlantic Canada. Or, colloquially, as the Rock Stars.

In the year 2072, new technology allows the television to be broadcast straight into -- and out of -- the human eye. When a reality show offers a lifetime of lazy luxury to the one person living the world's worst life, everyone is out to prove just how bad they've got it. Eight contestants vie for the prize, allowing the whole world to see life through their eyes, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Only the show's ever-smiling host, an equally hopeful and hapless former weatherman, seems to have any faith left in humanity. Each week, he struggles behind the scenes as he attempts to elevate the show and wring meaning out of his own unhappy existence. "Both a sharp rebuke of where humanity is and a dire warning about where we may be headed." -Foreword Reviews Lawless's debut turns a satirical eye toward the voyeurism of reality television and the future of augmented reality." -Publishers Weekly "Lawless' clever novel reflects the present day's digital media voyeurism and Survivor/Big Brother exploitation... with an ultimately dark outlook on the amoral peddling of schadenfreude." -Kirkus Reviews "I was blown away. And oh man, it couldn't have ended more perfectly! I'm still giddy about it." -James Dashner, author of THE MAZE RUNNER

In the beginning, fairy tales were all we had. Tales to explain the unexplained, to impart morality, and culture. But more often than not, to warn. From the editors of the From the Rock anthologies comes a new selection of stories, carefully curated from some of Newfoundland and Labrador's favourite authors. Between these pages, old tales are revisited, familiar foes lurk, and fairy tales for the modern age are born. Including the work of Bronwynn Erskine (By Reservation Only), Melissa Bishop (The Fairies of Foggy Island) and David James Lynch (All Things Broken).

There is no 'safe'. Parents tell their children fairy tales of brave knights who slay the dragon and save the kingdom. Then children grow up and tell themselves that they are brave enough to explore the deep marshes and humid swamps that surround their community, because they believe the stories are simply that: stories and fables. They tell themselves that they are safe. But there is no 'safe'. Now an ancient evil has risen, a legendary beast, a fiercely hungry creature larger than anything humans have ever imagined. A sea monster of gnashing teeth pulled up from the depths of the past, that has never evolved since its conception... Because, as the most fearsome apex predator to ever roam the Earth, it is already perfect. International Best-Selling award-winning horror icon Paul Carberry takes the terror inland in this stunning, suspenseful new thriller!
