An artist travels to Communist China to learn the secrets of Chinese ink painting Was it really reasonable to drop everything overnight and go off alone into the depths of Communist China in search of the forgotten secrets of ancient Chinese art? Fabienne Verdier never stopped to ask herself: in the early 1980s, the brilliant young Beaux-Arts student thought of nothing else but her desire to learn the art of painting and calligraphy - something that had been devastated by the Cultural Revolution. And when, a foreigner in the province of Sichuan, she found herself in an art school run by the Party, she was determined to adjust to the situation: the language and the mistrust of the Chinese, the unbearable lack of privacy, the poverty and disease and an inquisitorial administrative system. Blocking the West from her mind, Fabienne Verdier became the pupil of great artists working at the margins of society, who introduced her to the secrets and techniques of an age-old art form. This unique experience amounted to a true adventure story, leading eventually to Verdier's fascinating artistic practice that combines east Asian inspiration with contemporary painting. Passenger of Silence, an autobiographical travel journal by turns gripping and wholly moving, is an expanded English edition of the original French language text published by Albin Michel in 2005. - This book is a multi-vocal, inter-disciplinary, examination of Baga culture and specifically the performance of the Serpent masquerade within that cultureThis study of the wooden Serpent figures/headdresses of the Baga people of Guinea is a collaboration by the author, as an art historian, with many contributions from diverse perspectives, including scientists preeminent in their fields, Robert J. Koestler, Roy Sieber, Dennis William Stevenson, Mark T. Wypyski, and Peter J. Zanzucchi. The text begins with a thorough exploration of the ethnological and art historical evidence for the Serpent masquerade among the Baga of Guinea, bearing an immense wooden serpent figure on top of the head representing a python. Never witnessed or photographed by an outsider, it disappeared in the 1950s along with most ritual performance after an Islamic jihad instated strict prohibitions against indigenous religions. The ritual context is followed by an in-depth analysis of the Serpent masquerade figures now extant in collections in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, as well as other representations of the python in the ritual art of the region. The final sections present the arguments, as a debate, between interested persons in the arts, including art historians, dealers, appraisers, collectors, and curators, and the scientific examinations by specialists in botany, chemistry, physics, entomology, and conservation concerning one particular Serpent figure in question.

"Outsider art" is the name given to the idiosyncratic work of self-taught creators who are driven to use their own invented visual language to bring forth images from their imaginations. It is outside the continuum of art history, outside the boundaries of art recognized by established art institutions, and outside the collective discourse of the mainstream art world. This book examines the underlying biases, ideologies, and social factors that inform the various approaches to outsider art, including myths surrounding mental illness, movements toward social inclusion, and movements away from the marginalizing effect of labels. Most importantly, Outsider Art of Canada explores how we think about art and who is entitled to call themselves an artist. In this survey dedicated to outsider art in Canada, the first of its kind, the artists introduced have much to tell us about their need to create, unapologetically and without regard to public opinion.

Part one investigates the development of opaque glazes for use on porcelain and copper during the 18th century in work from three collections: Alfred Baur's vast collection of imperial ceramics; the Canton glazes of the Zubov Foundation; and export porcelain from the Ariana Museum in Geneva. The second part begins in France, in the 19th century, at the Sèvres factory, tracing the various journeys to China to bring back samples of color, analyze them chemically, and tirelessly attempt to reproduce them. The catalog ends in the present, with the experiments conducted by the American-born artist Fance Franck (1927-2008) on "sacrificial red" and the work on color carried out by the Austrian ceramist Thomas Bohle. A beautifully illustrated 2-volume set introducing Fondation Gandur's collection of classical antiques gathered over more than 40 years by founder Jean Claude Gandur.
La famosa citazione di Jean Dubuffet è celebre tra coloro che si interessano all'Art Brut. Questa sollecitazione che invita ad esplorare è molto chiara, e offre a chiunque l'accoglie gli indizi utili affinché si possa scoprire ciò che non si considera perché troppo vicino, e ciò che non si vede perché lontano dagli spazi espositivi più consueti. Questo è il caso delle fotografie di famiglie trovate nei mercati delle pulci e nei negozi di seconda mano dai collezionisti autori della presente pubblicazione. Antoine Gentil e Lucas Reitalov, dopo essersi incontrati nel 2017, hanno iniziato insieme una raccolta di fotografie di famiglia che oggi vanta diverse decine di migliaia di stampe e qualche centinaio di photomachinées tutte pubblicate in questo libro. Tale neologismo, inventato dai due collezionisti, indica forme che non sono né interamente fotografie né oggetti: sono piccoli feticci carichi di emozioni che non sono mai stati pensati per essere esposti. Grazie a una paziente ricerca i collezionisti hanno dato vita a una raccolta di ricordi altrimenti condannati all'oblio, che comprende semplici ritagli così come messe in scena più complesse dove le fotografie originali diventano parte di una narrazione articolata. Queste creazioni, realizzate a partire dalla fine del XIX secolo, sono via via scomparse contemporaneamente al cadere in disuso della stampa delle fotografie su carta e al subentrare coevo della tecnologia digitale. L'osservazione attenta di queste photomachinées ha fatto sì che si evidenziassero delle somiglianze indipendenti dal luogo di origine e dall'epoca di produzione, e ha consentito ai collezionisti di dare vita a insiemi omogenei: photorejetées, photorescapées, photocaviardées, photoencadrées, photoadorées...
