The scene is the blue and white room in the house of the Misses Susan and Phoebe Throssel in Quality Street; and in this little country town there is a satisfaction about living in Quality Street which even religion cannot give. Through the bowed window at the back we have a glimpse of the street. It is pleasantly broad and grass-grown, and is linked to the outer world by one demure shop, whose door rings a bell every time it opens and shuts. Thus by merely peeping, every one in Quality Street can know at once who has been buying a Whimsy cake, and usually why. This bell is the most familiar sound of Quality Street. Now and again ladies pass in their pattens, a maid perhaps protecting them with an umbrella, for flakes of snow are falling discreetly. Gentlemen in the street are an event; but, see, just as we raise the curtain, there goes the recruiting sergeant to remind us that we are in the period of the Napoleonic wars. If he were to look in at the window of the blue and white room all the ladies there assembled would draw themselves up; they know him for a rude fellow who smiles at the approach of maiden ladies and continues to smile after they have passed. However, he lowers his head to-day so that they shall not see him, his present design being converse with the Misses Throssel's maid. The room is one seldom profaned by the foot of man, and everything in it is white or blue. Miss Phoebe is not present, but here are Miss Susan, Miss Willoughby and her sister Miss Fanny, and Miss Henrietta Turnbull. Miss Susan and Miss Willoughby, alas, already wear caps; but all the four are dear ladies, so refined that we ought not to be discussing them without a more formal introduction. There seems no sufficient reason why we should choose Miss Phoebe as our heroine rather than any one of the others, except, perhaps, that we like her name best. But we gave her the name, so we must support our choice and say that she is slightly the nicest, unless, indeed, Miss Susan is nicer.Miss Fanny is reading aloud from a library book while the others sew or knit. They are making garments for our brave soldiers now far away fighting the Corsican Ogre.

This manual, originally published in 1958, covers methods of camouflaging fixed installations such as airfields, supply facilities, transportation facilities, buildings, and other objects and installations of a permanent or semipermanent nature. The material presented herein is applicable to nuclear and non-nuclear warfare. The basic principles of camouflage, factors of recognition, construction methods, and the geographic factors effecting camouflage are applicable to the camouflage of fixed installations, the primary difference being larger and more detailed camouflage construction of a more permanent nature. Terms used in this manual are general. For example, the camouflage of buildings is described in general terms to include all types of buildings regardless of their use or purpose, because the use or function of the installation being camouflaged has only an indirect bearing on the type of camouflage except where a specific problem is presented. When planning camouflage for a specific building the activity occupying the building will, in many instances, dictate changes in the application of camouflage. In the same way the surrounding terrain will have a direct bearing on the type of camouflage used. The camouflage of areas, concentration of activities, and emplacements for active defense are also described in general terms. Consequently it will be necessary for the camouflage planner to assemble the necessary information from this text to guide him in the designing of camouflage for a specific combination of buildings, areas, or emplacements.CONTENTS:Large Scale Camouflage PlanningIntroductionCamouflage PlanningCamouflage OperationsCamouflage Methods and ConstructionMethodsRear Area InstallationsMaintenanceIndex

High blood cholesterol is a serious problem. Along with high blood pressure and cigarette smoking, it is one of the three major modifiable risk factors for coronary heart disease. Approximately 25 percent of the adult population 20 years of age and older has "high" blood cholesterol levels-levels that are high enough to need intensive medical attention. More than half of all adult Americans have a blood cholesterol level that is higher than "desirable." Because high blood cholesterol is a risk to your health, you need to take steps to lower your blood cholesterol level. The best way to do this is to make sure you eat foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. The purpose of this book is to help you learn how to choose these foods. This book will also introduce you to key concepts about blood cholesterol and its relationship to your diet. For example, it includes basic (but very important) information about saturated fat-the dietary component most responsible for raising blood cholesterol-and about dietary cholesterol-the cholesterol contained in food. This book is divided into three parts. The first part of the book gives background information about high blood cholesterol and its relationship to heart disease. The second part introduces key points on diet changes and better food choices to lower blood cholesterol levels. Finally, in the third part more specific instructions are given for modifying eating patterns to lower your blood cholesterol, choosing low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol foods, and preparing low-fat dishes. The "glossary" provides easy definitions of new or unfamiliar terms. The "appendices" that follow the glossary list the saturated fat and cholesterol content of a variety of foods.ContentsEating to Lower Your High Blood CholesterolWhat You Need to Know About High Blood CholesterolWhy Should You Know Your Blood Cholesterol Level? How High Is Your Blood Cholesterol Level? What Should Your Blood Cholesterol Goal Be?How Does Your Blood Cholesterol Become High? The Recommended Treatment: A Blood Cholesterol-Lowering DietWhat Changes Should You Make in Your Diet?Eat Less High-Fat FoodEat Less Saturated FatSubstitute Unsaturated Fat for Saturated FatEat Less High-Cholesterol FoodSubstitute Complex Carbohydrates for Saturated FatMaintain a Desirable WeightHow Should You Change Your Daily Menu? What Kind of Success Can You Expect? How to Change Your Eating PatternsShop for Foods That Are Low in Saturated Fat and CholesterolRead the LabelsLow-Fat Cooking TipsWhere Can You Go For Help?Glossary

  • - An Exhaustive Study of the Nightless City
    av J E de Becker
    208,-

James A. Michener (in The Floating World) has called De Becker's notorious study and history of Tokyo's brothel quarter an "unorganized collection of astonishing facts." De Becker, a lawyer, was one of very few naturalized Westerners living in Yokohama; he wrote numerous works on Japanese law, economics and language during the period 1897-1928. He treats his subject seriously and in detail, providing information on modes, manners, laws, architecture and every aspect of the brothels of Yedo. He claims in his preface that "so long as the human race shall last, so long as human appetites demand illegitimate gratification, so long as human blood shall course hot in the veins, so long as men have passions, so long as women are frail, so long as illicit pleasure has attraction for bewildered wallowing humanity, and so long as lust 'the headstrong beast' stalks through the earth, venery and dissipation will undoubtedly continue to claim thousands of unhappy victims." The subtitle more accurately reflects the topic of this book. The "History of the Yoshiwara Yuwaku," refers to a segregated town (Yuwaku) provided with brothels and assignation houses first established in the 1650's in the Yoshiwara section of Edo, now Tokyo, and a center of Japanese prostitution into the early 20th century, when it became a target of social reformers and public health workers dealing with the spread of venereal disease. This very early study of the Yoshiwara before the great fire is an anthropological and behavioral study classic, outlining all classes of prostitutes, their occupations, clients and method of service to the owners. The best, most complete book on the subject, popular or scholarly-this is both.

  • - The Romance of the Sower
    av Eleonor Atkinson
    192,-

Apple-blossoms that gladdened the hearts, and fruits that brought comfort and pleasure to the rude firesides of the earliest settlers in the Middle West, were the living memorials of an apostle of beauty, peace and social service who is now almost forgotten. Explorer, missionary, fur-trader and conqueror preceded Jonathan Chapman, the nurseryman of Puritan breed, whose identity was lost in the devoted "Johnny Appleseed." His day was that of the pioneers who crossed the Alleghany Mountains; of the river boatmen who navigated the uncharted waterways of the old Northwest Territory, and of the Indian-fighters of the last border wars. All of these played their honorable parts in the winning of an empire of forest and prairie. But no one of them labored with greater courage, over such a large region of country, or toiled with the unselfishness and un-tiring zeal of this heroic orchardist. Half mystic, half poet, a lover of nature and of his fellow-men, his long life of solitary and perilous wandering, always in the van of migration, was consecrated to the blossoming of the wilderness. Three-quarters of a century ago he was still a loved and revered guest in the cabins of our grandfathers. His orchards lived after him. Some of his trees may be standing today; but the man who planted them has receded to a dim, legendary figure. Let us recover what may be known of him, restore him to his time and place, recall the almost incredible conditions under which he did his inspired task. Let us give him again his meed of love and gratitude for a beautiful life of self-sacrifice that asked no reward, and that came, in old age, to some end obscure and lonely. This book was originally published in 1915.

  • - Land of Opportunity for Investment, Business, Residence, and Retirement
    av Adam Starchild
    282,-

When people think of Ireland, few think of the country as a place to start a business, make investments, emigrate to in search of a better life, or retire to in hopes of spending golden years in delightful activities and pursuits. These people don't realize that Ireland possesses an exceptionally high quality of life, low living costs, low crime, and low stress. Without question, Ireland has evolved into Europe's most important offshore financial center, leading to a host of significant advantages to investors. People seeking a superior land for retirement often find Ireland an excellent choice. Along with Ireland's fine investment climate, retirees enjoy free hospitalization, free transportation on buses and trains, and, in some cases, even free fuel and energy. Retirees also find the price of land and housing in Ireland to be most reasonable, and they genuinely appreciate Ireland's low rate of crime. Many people moving to Ireland feel safer in their new homes than just about anywhere else they lived. For those wishing to stay in Ireland at least part of the year, or who would like to obtain residency, Ireland is relatively easy to enter. This is particularly true if you have an Irish ancestor, and in many cases you need not have descended from this individual in a direct line. Ireland has changed remarkably in the last several years, achieving a style of living that is both comfortable and rewarding, but it is likely that the nation's future will be even brighter. During the last two decades the Irish government has invested in infrastructure and telecommunications in an effort to position the country to take part in the grand global economy. The success of this policy is obvious in Ireland's steady economic gains. Furthermore, Ireland is poised to benefit from the investment of overseas companies even as its own economy continues to expand. Strong, consistent growth is expected well into the future. All this makes Ireland an extremely attractive place for relocation, retirement, and investment. Ireland, clearly, has much to offer just about everyone. Over the past 25 years, Adam Starchild has been the author of over two dozen books, and hundreds of magazine articles, primarily on business and finance. His articles have appeared in a wide range of publications around the world-including Business Credit, Euromoney, Finance, The Financial Planner, International Living, Offshore Financial Review, Reason, Tax Planning International, The Bull & Bear, Trust & Estates, and many more. Now semi-retired, he was the president of an international consulting group specializing in banking, finance and the development of new businesses, and director of a trust company. Although this formidable testimony to expertise in his field, plus his current preoccupation with other books-in-progress, would not seem to leave time for a well-rounded existence, Starchild has won two Presidential Sports Awards and written several cookbooks, and is currently involved in a number of personal charitable projects. • av Anthony Trollope
    410,-

The Kellys and the O'Kellys was Trollope's second novel, written when he was thirty-four. Like The Macdermots and Castle Richmond, it was the fruit of his experience as a postal official in Ireland. There is plenty of lovemaking, physical violence, sport, and whisky punch.

  • - A Story of German Love
    av F Max Mller
    282,-

The story speaks for itself. Without plot, incidents or situations, it is nevertheless dramatically constructed, unflagging in interest, abounding in beauty, grace and pathos, and filled with the tenderest feeling of sympathy, which will go straight to the heart of every lover of the ideal in the world of humanity, and every worshiper in the world of nature. Its brief essays upon theology, literature, and social habits, contained in the dialogues between the hero and the heroine, will commend themselves to the thoughtful reader by their clearness and beauty of statement, as well as by their freedom from prejudice. Friedrich Max Muller (1823-1900) was an Anglo-German orientalist and comparative philologist. He was a theologian who also wrote and translated books about the religions and sacred texts of the Far East, such as Buddhism and Confucianism. In 1898 he received the high honor of being made a Privy Councillor, and in1899 he published Auld Lang Syne. This is a personal account relating his interpretations and memories of his interactions with great historic figures of the day (including the great figures of classical European literature and music) and his impressions of the cultural, artistic, and political mood in Europe, as well as grand wars and conflicts dealt with by the royals of Prussia and other powers of the mid to late 1800s.
