This comprehensive and authoritative guide to practical navigation draws on the author's extensive experience of leisure cruising and ocean racing.
This small book is intended principally as a help to leisure boaters who are not familiar with the Thames through central London. However, Part 2 may well help even the most seasoned of watermen. The length of the river covered is from Margaret Ness in the east, to Putney Bridge in the west. This is the area for which a local knowledge endorsement is required for most commercial skippers. It is a very busy part of the Thames, with every conceivable type of craft likely to be encountered. The book is divided into three parts: The first part gives general information and advice, and in passing, mentions local rules which will be relevant . The second part lists many places the names of which you might read or hear on the radio. The third part outlines the types of hazard you will encounter as you make your way up river on a fold-out chart
The title of Rod Heikell's latest writing only hints at this book's content and coverage. Five years ago the author and his wife, Lu, set out on a circumnavigation and the opening part of The Tradewind Foodie is an account of the successive eastbound passages first to the Caribbean and then on through the Panama Canal to the Pacific, Australia and the Indian Ocean. There's plenty of practical advice as well as entertaining asides in Rod's inimitable style on the incidents that contributed to the adventure. Throughout, however, there is a slant towards provisioning, cooking on board and discovering food and restaurants at the numerous landfalls. Rod Heikell provides an extensive selection of tried and tested dishes in the second part of the book. Cooking at sea is an art and Rod's selection provides a great range of recipes that are practical under most sea conditions. "Whilst taking you from the Mediterranean on a whirlwind trip west-about the world, dealing with food and provisioning as they go, Rod and Lu also incorporate a surprising amount of interesting information into this book...Having successfully tried a few recipes at home, with their straightforward ingredients list and instructions, I would have no hesitation in trying the rest on board. This is a useful, practical book which also makes for fascinating reading..." Sandy Duker, Cruising Magazine.

This new title covers the extensive cruising area of Galicia in the north west of Spain from Ribadeo to Bayona, where the beautiful rias provide shelter from the Atlantic in picturesque harbours and remote anchorages. The authors have spent several seasons cruising in the area and making use of their local connections have produced a modern guide that provides in-depth information necessary for yachts spending time visiting the rias and ports of Galicia. Annotated town plans covering over 90 destinations show shore-side facilities and recommended restaurants and side panels provide advice on interesting places to visit, local customs and features of interest. Carlos Rojas has sailed yachts since 2000, a short but intensive career during which he has crossed the Atlantic, cruised in the Pacific, made several passages across Biscay and sailed to Ireland and France. His professional involvement in technology companies as an engineer, manager and director has given him an insight into design and usability that he applies to his pilot books. Carlos has lived most of his life in Britain but he is originally from Spain, a country that he knows well, naming Galicia as one of his favourite areas. Robert Bailey was brought up in a sailing family. Over a period of 35 years, and with the aid of a Nicholson 32 and Rustler 36, much of the coastline of the north western approaches to Europe, from the Faroe Islands in the north to the Morbihan in the south, were avidly explored. In 2001 he adopted a more flexible approach to his career as an aerospace engineer and this allowed him to take up cruising instruction. He is now a Yachtmaster Instructor.
The West Country is a brand new cruising guide covering Lyme Bay to Land's End and the Isles of Scilly. It provides essential sailing directions and detailed listings of facilities together with a wealth of information for those wishing to learn about the West Country and enjoy trips ashore. Part of the coastline has World Heritage Status and its geological history is described. Human settlement is traced and the reader is given guidance to find the oldest European fossil of modern man and numerous bronze age remains. Seahorses, dolphins, birds and flowers are discussed as is the history of the cream tea, which comes with a recipe for scones! People of significance, who were born or moved here, such as Sir Francis Drake, William Cookworthy and Agatha Christie, are also included, together with information on the atmospheric railway, the mining and fishing industry and, of course, the Cornish pasty. All the information relevant to a passage, harbour or anchorage is arranged for easy access. Aerial photographs have been taken by Patrick Roach. Ordnance Survey road maps and larger scale town plans help pinpoint facilities ashore. The West Country and Imray charts for the southwest of England provide a comprehensive package for all visitors arriving by boat. Carlos Rojas wrote Imray's Cruising Galicia with Robert Bailey. Along with Imray and through his company Tucabo he has released marine apps for the iPhone and iPad, including Tides, Rules & Signals, Racing Rules, Boat Handling and Chart Navigation using Imray charts.
Aerial photographs by Patrick Roach. The South coasts of Devon and Cornwall are the first or the last many mariner has of England. Whether running up-channel, bound east for London and Northern Europe, or beating ever westwards out into the stormy Atlantic, these shores have been a haven, a guide, and occasionally, the source of ruin. All we who have made the traverse or have sought shelter in the multitude of harbours between Portland Bill and the Isles of Scilly, have had to carry out our pilotage from the decks of a vessel of some sort. How often we have longed for the wings of a sea eagle, to see what we cannot see. Powered flight has finally given us this chance, and Patrick Roach, the maestro of the airbourne camera has so excelled himself with this series of images that our mutual friend the publisher has had little choice but to bind us into one volume to share the wonders he has revealed. So stretch out your wings, give a wild seagull's cry, and let's take to the skies together, bound out for the far west.

Derek Bowskill's lively commentary to the River Seine is both a comprehensive guide as well as source of all the essential information for navigators on the river from the sea to Paris and beyond to the start of the French inland waterways system. River Seine Cruising Guide covers the Seine estuary to Paris, the river above Paris and the Canal de l'Ourcq and L'Oise. Throughout, the narrative is illustrated with clear maps that indicate key places, and towards the end of the book there is a comprehensive directory of technical information.
