This volume contains 17 short review articles classified into 3 parts. Part I consists of 7 articles dealing with basic aspects of contractile mechanism in skeletal and smooth muscle cells and also function of melanocytes having many properties common to those of smooth muscles. Part II and Part III contain articles dealing with pathological aspects of cardiac and smooth muscle cell functions, and dealing with factors influencing structure and function of cardiac and smooth muscle cells and tissues. The Editor believes that these articles are stimulating and informative for readers interested in basic, pathological and clinical aspects of muscle cells and tissues.

Pesticides are considered as potential molecules to combat insects, pests, diseases and weeds in agricultural, horticultural cropping system as well as health management systems. Pesticides of chemical origin are highly effective against the target organism. However, the chemical pesticides have toxic effects on several non-target species and the growing environmental concerns raises the issues of safety and evaluation of toxicity. In this book the effects of chemical pesticides on fishes, earthworms, beneficial microbes and natural enemies in agricultural ecosystems are discussed. Furthermore, pesticides have the properties to disrupt endocrine and non-traditional pesticide compounds have been elaborately narrated. The recent technology on use of biomarkers in pesticide assay is described in two chapters. Some of plants having pesticidally active compounds are described. Use of biotechnological approaches for insect pest management and a new approach to recognize larva in the field by LIRA classifier system are two more interesting chapters of the book.

Thyroid hormone is important for controlling metabolism and many other body functions. Changes in thyroid hormone physiology, its regulation and diseases thereof have been a concern for the mankind.Understanding of the thyroid hormone(s) has been continuously updated and revised. The contributions from different authors have been incorporated in this book for this purpose. The original work of these contributors will be especially useful in furthering the knowledge on thyroid and help in creating new vistas of research.

As the cultivation of brassica crops continues to contribute to western diets, new approaches to maximizing yields are welcome. This book presents chapters on various aspects of this issue, with a particular focus on canola crops and the oil produced from them. Those chapters address the relevance of transgenic and molecular breeding techniques to develop cold tolerance in Brassica napus L. crops grown over the winter in North America, the effects of seed-placed ammonium sulphate and monoammonium phosphate on the germination and growth of brassicae oilseed crops and the cultivation of high-erucic Brassicaceae in a Mediterranean environment. Other chapters cover oil presses, sesame seeds and oilseed pests, as well as the nitrogen efficiency of oilseed rape.

Child maltreatment constitutes a social problem that affects all societies of the world. A recent study by the World Health Organisation points out that millions of children suffer some form of maltreatment and require medical and social attention. Therefore, child maltreatment is not a new phenomenon; it has been around since the beginning of time. Child maltreatment is recognized as an important psychopathological risk factor and is associated with poor psychological function in childhood and adolescence and adulthood. The aim of this book is to address the issue of child abuse and neglect from a multidimensional perspective. In the last few decades, Spectroscopy and its application dramatically diverted science in the direction of brand new era. The discovery of Salmonella in swine in 1885 marked the beginning of intense efforts to control salmonellae that have continued for the past 127 years. The majority of foodborne outbreaks are caused by only a few of the 2500+ known serovars. While progress has been made on many fronts, salmonellosis has yet to be eliminated in either developed or in developing nations. This work represents the collective contributions of authors from all around the world. Chapters in this book address a wide array of topics related to understanding and controlling this pathogen, including: Salmonella as studied in the environment, air and in food products; virulence and pathogenicity; control by bacteriophages and other antimicrobials; bacterial adaptation; etc.
