In November/December 2007, a violent eruption of hatred and crime burst out in Kenya. Many, especially the international community claimed it had been set off by the elections which had been held that December. The International community then brought the combatants together in the names of the contending presidential candidates in that election. Finally, a coalition government was established. It went on to rule for five years. A prosecutor from the International Criminal Court at The Hague was sent to Kenys to investigate the violence. He enhded up prosecuting the executioner and his victim so that no one really found out what had happened. It was not clear who had started the violence or with what intent. Those who had attacked others were accused together with those who had defended themselves. To date, none of the real victims of the violence especially those who had been evicted from their farms got justice. Some were relocated to tiny holding bought for them by successive governments, but his tended to justify their dispossion. Indeed, some of the people who evicted others unjustly still enjoys the fruits of their criminal activities. Most of the victims have never recieved justice. It is clear that the violence had started many years before that - at least the real causes of that violence could be traced as far back as the colonial settlement of the British in the Rift Valley. But none of that was ever said or examined. This story tries to examine some of the cause of that violence, giving genuine roots. It also exemplifies, through its characters, the effect of that violence on many innocent people, especially women and children. It tries to burst the myth of 'post-election violence' that was so avidly built by the international community to justify the dispossession of people and to forcibly change the government - or at least force the sharing of it.

On 21st September 2013, four masked gunmen attacked the WESTGATE MALL in Nairobi's Westlands area. Westlands is an upmarket suburb of Kenya's capital,. Nairobi. What followed was several days of total horror in which as many as 70 people were killed. The attack was generally blamed on Muslim extremism and it was neither the first, nor the last. ST MARYAN SEVEN AND THE WESTGATE RESCUE is a fictional enactment of this horror story. It fictionally examines what the victims might have gone through by recreating the horrors of this capture and hostage situation that lasted for quite some time. This story examines the root of such extremism and guides the youth on speaking out and agitating against such extremism. It is also a girls' hero story that encourages not only students in general but girls in particular. The SECOND narrative in the continuing ST MARYAN SEVEN SERIES, the novel tells the story of two students caught in the melee of the capture/abduction and how the girls help in speaking up against terrorism. It is a MUST READ for the youth in a world constantly faced with extremism of all sorts.

We've all heard of the horrible stories about househelps and child trafficking around the world. Recent stories of Mexican migrants to USA dying in container trucks are disturbing. The problem is especially rampant in the Middle East where girls from Africa and Asia are misused in the name of house maids. It seems nobody talks about this problem. Governments turn a blind eye or look the other way and pretend to be doing something about this problem even when many deaths of loved ones are reported. Sometimes we think - what the hell, those girls take themselves there! But we might be wrong. Very wrong. Many of them are innocent girls or mothers looking to feed their families. This horrifying narrative should move YOU enough to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM!

Poetry is one of the most challenging subjects. It has been a big challenge both to study it and even to write it because it has inherent rules that determine how it works. To interpret it, understand it or even write it, one needs to understand these rules. Any good poetry enthusiast, critic or writer begins here. This book tries to make the reader understand the bulk of these rules. It uses some of the most exciting and popular poetry through time to examines poetry rules and to diagnose the most common problems that readers of poetry encounter. While the target of this book is majorly students and teachers of poetry in high schools and colleges, the book will be found crucial by anyone in the poetry field. Those who intend to write poetry, for example, will find the book illuminating in its attempt to explain how poems are generally written and what and how poets intend to communicate. The book examines the nature of sound patterns as a major tenet of communication in poetry. These include rhythm, rhyme and the like. The book also examines the elements that help poetry make meaning including use of irony and sarcasm, tone and atmosphere and many others. It then goes on to give twenty six poems which illuminate the issues which are discussed, giving questions which help illuminate these issues and test the reader's understanding of them so far. Teachers and students of poetry will find this section especially important in their study of poetry. A Separate book with suggested answers to the questions given here is available. The book also gives a catalogue of some of the terms used in poetry so that the reader can reflect on their meaning should they present a problem where they are encountered in the book.

This book draws its inspiration from the age-old conflict between the sexes. Men have forever been in conflict with women over who can do what, who should do what, and probably to put it more succintly, who can do what better than the other. This conflict is even sharper in the youth with young women going for careers formerly meant for the male gender, such as politics - and most science based careers. This novella focuses on games. In the story, seven St. Mary's Girls High School students - who we have already met in the other three novellas in the series (Amy, St. Maryan Seven and The Westgate Rescue and St. Maryan Seven and the Dubai Allure) decide to challenge a neighbouring boys school in soccer. With other cross-currents in the plot which involve their school, the boys themselves, as well as their teacher's former collegemate, the stage is set for a riveting narrative. The girls learn a lot more than they bargained for when they challenge these boys.

The study of the modern African novel has been quite a challenge both at the high school and at the university level. This is especially so for novels that address traditional tenets of the African society. These novels, however, form a good corpus as a basis for comparative literature, especially looking at the African novel as compared to its European or the American counterpart. Still, the odinary critic is used to earlier African writers including Ngugi, Achebe, Soyinka and the rest. Margaret Ogola presents a challenging novel in The River and the Source because it examines the modern African society. This critical book of this novel affords the reader all the necessary angles from which this novel can be seen including Plot, Character, Themes and Elements of Style. It goes further to examine common ways of examining the novel by giving excerpt and essay questions and explaining in detail how such questions should be approached. The book focuses on the national exam in Kenya - the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination through which candidates matriculate and qualify for entry to the university. This, however, should give a good insight to any candidate worldwide regardless of the examination they are supposed to sit for. The book looks at the division of time as well as thinking how to earn marks and ensuring the candidate ganers as much as possible of what is given. These explanations will allow the candidate of a different examination to adjust depending on the time allowed and the marks given for questions in that particular examination. This makes this book applicable to the student of the novel - and the African novel in particular - anywhere in the world.

The study of the Afican novel is often challenging to both the teacher and the student in high schools and colleges. This is because, apart from many modern African novels being multi-faceted, many teachers and students still use the traditional methods of analysis. Often, such methods leave the reader with a lot of knowledge about the particular text, but with few literary skills that can be used on other literary texts or even other genres. This guide book approaches this subject a little differently. First, It uses a series of questions which help the reader to do a personal analysis of the text, rather than give a corpus of facts about the novel like many traditional guides do. These questions are arranged such that the reader is able to move from the facts or the events and incidents narrated in the novel, gradually to the elements of literature - plot, themes, characters and elements of style - which is what any examiner, and other critics, deal with. Even so, the book presents these traditional facts later but now, the reader can easily see where they are drawn from. That way, the reader, especially the new student of literature in general and the critic of the African novel in particular, can build skills which help appreciate the novel and literature in general. This is important because, such skills, once acquired, can easily be used on other novels, African or otherwise, even in other genres of literature. The notes given later therefore form a basis for discussion between the reader and the critic, a discussion in which the reader has already been sharpened enough to either agree or disagree with what is said. That, I believe, is the point of studying literature. Also, the book provides a step by step interpretation, planning and execution of both excerpt and essay questions - a daunting task for the modern high school and college student. This will help the student do what examiners expect and apply these skills to any other genres of literature they come across.

This book gives you a complete examination of John Steinbeck's novella, The Pearl. It analyzes the plot showing the connectedness of events, then examines the characters showing how they are fashioned and what the writer intends by them - their role. The book also discusses the various themes and the elements of style to give a total picture of the novel. The book goes further to examine how the reader of the novel should approach both excerpt and essay questions set on the novel. The book uses questions drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education - the examination through which candidates matriculate to mid-level colleges and universities. Anyone studying for a different exam should use the ideas given here as a platform for understanding the expectations of examiners, then adjust according to the length and requirements of the particular exam one is required to sit for. The book also gives a catalogue of literary terms with examples drawn from The Pearl so that the reader can easily use them in own writing. Though this book is a comprehensive guide, booklets that examine various elements such as plot, character, theme or style are available. This is in cognizance of the fact that some examiners - especially in coollege - only require students to ocus on particular elements. Many other books by the same writer are available for cross-referencing.

When it comes to education matters, especially writing, the problem may not be so much what we know but how to present it to those who need to read it to prove that we know what we are required to know. More often than not, students will have a lot of facts but fail to present them in a way that they will easily be understood. In some cases, especially in high school and colllege, the problem gets even bigger. We do not only need to present what is expected but examiners require it presented in a specific manner. Essay writing skills therefore become crucial. Examiners will gauge both what we know - the content of our essays - and how it is presented. Both combine to form the total mark we get for our essays. This happens in cases where we may not even be shown exactly how to write those essays. This book becomes crucial in that it tackles this question point by point, showing the high school and college student what to do in order to earn high marks in high school and college essays. This goes for essays written in English/Literature as a subject and for all other essays written in other disciplines. Though broadly based on the KENYA CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EXAMINATION requirements, which sees students matriculate into colleges, its ideas have universal application for essay writing is basically similar. The only changes might be the LENGTH of the essays required and the TIME given for each essay which might differ from place to place, level to level etc. With the ideas taught here, however, any student should be able to adjust to the requirement of the local exam and get an A GRADE in any essay.

We have all got to that point where we are about to engage in something new...and we are not sure how to continue. We have all had that chance when we go to a new school or a new class and we are afraid of the reception. Some of our parents have dotted on us in basic or primary school...until it gets to a point when we have to leave them and manage on our own...AMY is a COMING OF AGE novella in which a teenage girl gets to that point where she has to do an exam in order to join high school, only that our Amy has to go to a boarding school far away from home. She has been used to having things done for her...almost, and now she has to learn to cope on her own. And she has to make new friends. Her passing her exam becomes a stepping stone to a new challenge. But she eventually finds high school a lot more fun than she had ever anticipated. AMY is the FIRST novella in the ST MARYAN SEVEN SERIES. They tell stories that challenge teenagers about their perceptions, their choices, and give teachers and parents dealing with teenagers tips on how to manage them. AMY introduces the characters who feature in the series as well as grounds the narratives. Besides, this series teaches English Idioms as used in context, thereby helping the teenager improve in communication skills and creative writing. The idea here is that a second language is learnt more easily and quicker through narratives, not the textbook. Welcome aboard.
