Topics covered in A Short History of the Brain include prehistoric brain surgery; the discoveries made by Islamic scholars during the medieval period; why Renaissance artists incorporated brain imagery into their paintings; how the electric eel stimulated brain research during the Enlightenment; the impact of evolutionary theory on concepts of brain function in the 19th century; the role Sigmund Freud played in the development of neurology; the invention of the brain scan; how we came to understand ourselves as 'neurochemical selves' in the 21st century. From grade school to junior year, Ian Wilder's heart belongs to one person-his next-door neighbor and best friend Penelope Archer. To him, they match like the last two puzzle pieces across an infinite, jigsaw universe. Together, they spend every free moment in the outgrown treehouse adjoining their yards. There, under the dull glow of dying flashlights, Ian scribbles the words and Penelope paints the worlds from their imagination. From western shootouts with kooky outlaws or surviving a horde of alien zombies aboard a space station, their stories have always been more vivid than reality. But junior year hits harder. Their stories take a back seat to make out sessions under the sleeping bags of that old treehouse. And as these two puzzle pieces jostle closer to completing the universe, something changes. Tragedy strikes. Ian cracks and succumbs to a walking state of catatonia. When Ian finally returns to school, a strange substitute teacher tells Ian that infinite realities exist across a multiverse. Stranger yet, he needs Ian's help to prevent a similar tragedy in an alternate reality filled with blood-thirsty pirates. The Ghost of the Wicked Crow is a story about a teenager using his overactive imagination to cope with trauma. Can you solve your problems with the multiverse at your fingertips? Or does it fracture your psyche and family even further?

There is a war going on within your mind. It's a battle between the positive and the negative. The side that wins determines the life you live. This book will show you how to take control of your thoughts and win the inner war against negativity. In this inspirational fable, Jack McKee is a professional golfer who has just suffered through the most humiliating meltdown of his career. After years of struggle, he is ready to quit on his dream. He has convinced himself he doesn't have what it takes to make it on the PGA Tour. In a desperate attempt to figure out why his career has ended up the way it has, Jack reaches out to one of the game's greatest former players for advice. This legendary golfer teaches Jack that the problem is not in his swing, but in his mind. As Jack learns to combat his thoughts of self-doubt and worry, his golf game improves right along with his mindset, culminating in the most important tournament of his career. As this story plays out, you will learn... - How to take control of your thoughts and make sure they are working for you instead of against you. - The importance of talking to yourself instead of listening to yourself. - How to develop a morning and evening mental routine that will keep you in a positive state of mind. - The technique used by many of the world's most successful people to make gratitude a part of their daily lives. - The fastest way to fight off worry and negative thoughts. - How to protect your mind from the negative, anxiety-producing, and failure-oriented messages that surround us daily. - The importance of your self-image and how to program it for your benefit. - The biggest, yet often-misunderstood, key to performing at your best when the pressure turns up. - How to find peace and confidence no matter what is going on around you. - And much more... This book is about the mental game we all must play on a daily basis - regardless of our chosen profession. It will show you how to win the inner war that takes place within your mind. Once you start winning the war in your mind, you will start winning in the game of life.

The city of Gdańsk resides on the Baltic coast in northern Poland. It is Poland's principal seaport, and with a population of 470,621, it is also Poland's fourth-largest metropolitan area. The city has a complex history with periods of Polish and German rule, and autonomy as the Free City of Dunzig. It has been an important shipbuilding and trade port since the Middle Ages. In 1361, becoming a member of the Hanseatic League would define its economic, demographic, and urban landscape. The years 1918 through 1939 saw Gdańsk lay in the disputed Polish Corridor, and its ambiguous political status created tensions that culminated in the Invasion of Poland and the first skirmish of the Second World War at Westerplatte. After 1945 the contemporary city was shaped by extensive border changes, expulsions, and new settlements. In the 1980s, Gdańsk witnessed the birth of the Solidarity movement which served to precipitate the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. Today, Gdańsk is the most visited city in Poland with 3.4 million tourists passing through each year (2019). The city constantly maintains top rankings for quality of life, safety, and living standards worldwide, and its historic city center has been listed as one of Poland's national monuments. In this collection, David Kent captures a series of spectacular images of the unique cityscapes, landscapes, and daily life of those of the Baltic city of Gdańsk in Poland, as well as a variety of images from Sopot, Warsaw, and Toruń. All images were taken at various times of the day, night, and year.

The Church of Cathedral and Crusade is the third installment in Henri Daniel-Rops' monumental History of the Church of Christ. This volume includes the first seven chapters of that work, surveying the salient characteristics of the period 1050 to 1350; the religious foundation of the age and its expressions in prayer and pilgrimage, liturgy and sacrament; the archetype of medieval manhood, St. Bernard of Clairvaux; the leavening labors of reform and renewal by Popes Gregory VII and Paschal II and Sts. Francis of Assisi and Dominic de Guzman; the relationship between Church and State, popes and monarchs, and ecclesial and secular hierarchies; the governmental model of the medieval Church and its effects on the moral and material economies; and the tension between such Christian ideals as fidelity, humility, and charity (symbolized by St. Louis IX) and those all-too-human realities of impetuosity, vanity, and violence.Spectacular in scope and detail, The Church of Cathedral and Crusade presents Christ-endom in "the springtime of its youth" in which it "built the cathedrals, compiled the summae, embarked on the crusades, spread and intensified the Gospel message; while the Church's power reached heights hitherto unexplored, and she herself became the guide of human thought." The cause of this incomparable creativity? Simply, on Daniel-Rops' studied assessment, that "from the lowest to the highest, society believed."
