Devil's Bridge, Mid WalesA thousand years ago, the devil built the town a bridge. But there was a price - he would return at different times and in different guises and each time there'd be the direst consequences for those living in its shadow. Darkness descendsTo most in the town, it's just a colourful local legend; a flight of fancy. Dark deeds have happened in Devil's Bridge from time to time, but dark deeds can happen anywhere - and there's no such thing as the devil anyway. A community in conflictBut then a massive scandal, involving a schoolboy and his English teacher, hits the town. It drags to the surface an equally toxic scandal from years before. And soon, even the most die-hard of sceptics begin to wonder if a devil-like figure is walking in their midst...

The pieces in this collection have been gathered from the author's work during the 1970s through the 1990s, and the settings reflect her moves from Southern California, to Missouri, minus some years in the 80s, to San Francisco, to Louisiana, and a jaunt into Mexico. The earliest pieces began life as classroom assignments. Compose a story about two women who are sitting at a table with a vase of white roses that shatter: became Ornamental Bruises. Describe one of your evening dinners last week: became The Runaways. Write a poem about a color: became Grey is the color.... What those and other assignments produced was enough to convince the author she could do what she always wanted to do: write. A survey of the collection shows a large handful of sad pieces: a visit to the hotel where RFK was assassinated, a man whose wife has left him and taken their son though he pretends to his brother she has not, a tousled-haired streetwalker in San Francisco, scattering ashes on a San Francisco beach, a man who dies but lives on via a Mockingbird's song. Other pieces are upbeat or offbeat: a woman's revenge against her Christmas-hating husband, an odd meeting with Francis Ford Coppola, a man's jealousy over his wife telling a friend about her childhood, a cuckold wallowing in his misery, a young Mexican woman who falls into delusions. Each piece, whether prose or poem, was built on the manipulation of memories, the re-imagining of tales the author's been told, of observing both her own life and the lives of others. Whether in the construction of a poem or to advance a story's narrative, the author allowed her characters to borrow the very beds she's slept in, to steal food off her tables and words out of mouths.

When all their friends start young families and their dinner-party lifestyle is ruined, a wealthy couple hires an assassin to kill all the children and restore the adults-only decadence that completes them. Will and Rose were happy once. Long ago, when they partied with their special clique of friends on the mezzanine of their multi-million-dollar mansion. If you were gawking over their electrified gate after midnight, you'd see their dancing, champagne-flute-holding silhouettes through silk curtains. Oh, the privilege. There were four couples in all, and they gathered every Friday night for six-to-seven hours of shameless hedonism. It was their end-of-week ode to self-indulgence and Will and Rose never thought it would end. But then it did, beginning with four terrifying words, uttered flippantly before the main course on a stormy November evening: "We're having a baby." NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN OR PEOPLE WHO LIKE CHILDREN

For the lover of Physics, I am sure you will gravitate to this book with its electrifying intensity, this book tries to keep physics as light as possible. The series of Fantastic Jokes is now targeting all aspects of Physics, from famous physicists, and classical physics to quantum mechanics. We don't always make a joke about Quantum Physics, but when we do, we don't. This book is the opposite of friction and not a drag. Now, a word of caution must be had, some jokes are innocent, and some are rude & lewd, but none are meant to offend. As studies have shown, the darker your sense of humour, the more intelligent you may be. Remember you matter, unless you travel at the speed of light then you're energy. "Imagination is more important than Knowledge." - Albert Einstein.

Everyday Courage>Christia Madacsi Hoffman began her second collection of poetry before we knew what was coming, before the coronavirus pandemic advanced across the globe. As our individual worlds grew smaller, bending our thoughts inward, Hoffman continued writing, observing the routines, patterns, sounds and silences of a new normal that intensified our awareness of our collective state. In Everyday Courage, Hoffman captures an exceptional span of the American experience, from public moments of political and social change to private shifts within her own perspective. PRAISE FOR EVERYDAY COURAGE"In Everyday Courage, we meet again the morning poet, and are taken from the small hours of dawn in bright empty rooms to the wider world-through the wilds of love, through 'other' and into the self. True poet Hoffman assures us that wonder is the height of intellectuality, and that>Through pandemic and political upheaval, we cannot remain on the shores of certainty and are pulled out to rivers of risk. Coveted are the bodies of water moving through Hoffman's collection-when teaching her daughter to row, looking out over the idyllic shores of home or simply lying before the summer sea. There are Septembers here, winter peaches and shut doors-bolted with 'protectionism' or closed only with a 'sticky lock.' Hoffman finds home in this work as a point of arrival and departure, insisting that love is brave, as free to roam as it is keen to land." -Jim Trainer, Poet & Publisher, Yellow Lark Press
