This book provides relevant background data and theory regarding English language (EL) students, the challenges they face in learning English, and the need to find strategies for enhancing reading engagement among these students. Additionally, the chapters discuss the ways in which the findings could advance instructional knowledge for EL students. The author presents and explores the results of participant interviews conducted with 10 students, each with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. From their stories, emerged 7 themes of bilingual instruction including: quality of reading lessons, culturally responsive instruction, active learning offers individualized direction, language instruction, and instructional time for choosing literature. This book will provide teachers with numerous instructional strategies and ways to build literacy into an EL learner's curriculum.
The Indian Army was one of the most important colonial institutions that the British created. From its humble origins as a mercantile police force to a modern contemporary army in the Second World War, this institution underwent many transitions. This book examines the Indian Army during the later colonial era from the First Afghan War in 1839 to Indian independence in 1947. During this period, the Indian Army developed from an internal policing force, to a frontier army, and then to a conventional western style fighting force capable of deployment to overseas' theaters. These transitions resulted in significant structural and doctrinal changes in the army. The doctrines, and tactics honed during this period would have a dramatic impact upon the post-colonial armies of India and Pakistan. From civil-military relations to fighting and structural doctrines, the Indian and Pakistani armies closely reflect the deep-seated impact of decades of evolution during the late colonial era.

Posthuman Worlds: Roberto Bolaos Narrative and Virtual Reality presents interpretations of several novels and one short story by Roberto Bolao. As befits the global setting of most of these narratives, they are analyzed from the perspective of global culture and politics. Particular attention is paid to transnational European politics, as this topic is central to an understanding of the intertwined themes of politics and the law in Bolao's work. In Distant Star and ';Labyrinth,' these themes exist within the context of a preoccupation with personal identity and ideology. Adolfo Cacheiro utilizes psychoanalytic interpretation and philosophical exegesis to clarify the subjective component of this preoccupation in the aforementioned texts. The law is also a prominent theme of The Savage Detectives, which Cacheiro interprets in relation to mythology. One of the most innovative aspects of this book is the discussion of the role of virtual reality in Amulet and 2666. These novels are read as representations of a posthuman world that manifest an intertextual relationship with science fiction. In 2666 virtual reality unifies the diverse components of a world system in time and space. A phenomenological investigation of this reality supports the conclusion that the principle subject matter of 2666 is a naturalistic theology based on technology.
In Racial Realism and the History of Black People in America, Lori Latrice Martin demonstrates how racial realism is a key concept for understanding why and how black people continue to live between a cycle of optimism and disappointment in the United States. Central to her argument is Derrick Bell's work on racial realism, who argued that the subordination of black people in America is permanent. American Romanticism, Education, and Social Reform: The Great Work of Mutual Education focuses on three Romantic educational genres and their institutional and media contexts: the conversation, literary journalism, and the public lecture. The genres discussed in this book illustrate the ways in which the Transcendentalists engaged nineteenth-century media and educational institutions in order to fully realize their projects. The book also charts the development from the semi-public conversational platforms such as Alcott's Temple School and Fuller's conversation for women in the 1830s to the increasingly public periodical culture and lecture platforms of the 1840s and the early 1850s. This expansion caused a reconsideration of the meaning and function of Romanticism. The 1830s and 1840s saw a redefinition of what Romantic literary practice was. As the Romantics' attempt to institutionalize and popularize their educational ideals increasingly involved them in the institutional structures of the nineteenth-century educational field, they encountered the exclusionary mechanisms which limited educational opportunities, just as much as they had to come to terms with their own role in an educational system which recreated social privilege.

In Instructional Cinema and African Audiences in Colonial Kenya, 19261963, the author argues against the colonial logic instigating that films made for African audiences in Kenya influenced them to embrace certain elements of western civilization but Africans had nothing to offer in return. The author frames this logic as unidirectional approach purporting that Africans were passive recipients of colonial programs. Contrary to this understanding, the author insists that African viewers were active participants in the discourse of cinema in Kenya. Employing unorthodox means to protest mediocre films devoid of basic elements of film production, African spectators forced the colonial government to reconsider the way it produced films. The author frames the reconsideration as bidirectional approach. Instructional cinema first emerged as a tool to ';educate' and ';modernize' Africans, but it transformed into a contestable space of cultural and political power, a space that both sides appropriated to negotiate power and actualize their abstract ideas.

They can be a dangerous lure in a culture that settles for substitutes and venerates the screen. Alerting us to the threatening prospect of carebots becoming our surrogate for interpersonal connection, he maintains they are not the culprits. The challenge lies in how we relate to them. While they beneficially complement our caregiving, carebots cannot replace human caring. Caring is a fundamentally human act and lies at the heart of ethics. As humans, we have a binding moral responsibility to care for the Other, and genuine caring demands our embodied, human-to-human presence.

Understanding Human Conduct: The Innate and Acquired Meaning of Life presents a new and provocative model of life-meaning.
