Robert Young''s famous translation of the New Testament Gospels, in which each passage is written to reflect its exact and literal meaning, is presented here in this attractive edition. For his translation of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Robert Young used two resources: The Textus Receptus (TR) are manuscripts in Greek whose origins date to antiquity. Collated and published by the Renaissance theologian Erasmus, these texts were used in translations by Christian luminaries such as William Tyndale, Robert Estienne and the scholars who composed the celebrated King James Bible. Prior to their arrangement by Erasmus, the Greek texts had been faithfully copied by monk scribes through the generations. Majority Text (MT) - or the Byzantine text - are the commonest form of text used for describing the character of the New Testament. This textual criticism was cross-referenced by Young, that he could present his own work in the most consistently literal manner possible.
Rumi's great book of wisdom-infused poetry contain myriad lessons on the importance of faith, with the culture and lessons of spiritual, Biblical and Islamic teachings featuring strongly. In authoring his masterwork, Rumi quoted the Qu'ran, the Bible and several spiritual forebears. Wishing to align his poetry in order to tell tales of man and man's place in the world, Rumi drew upon a variety of religious and spiritual sources to create a poetic compendium of supreme profundity and depth. The Masnavi was praised as one of the finest works of mystical literature ever seen.It is in the Masnavi that Persia's place between the spiritual cultures of Asia and the Middle East is evidenced. Rumi himself, while undoubtedly an Islamic scholar of great ability, did not feel confined to the faith; he saw spiritual value in a range of disciplines, and asserted that the light of Mohammed's prophecy does not leave faithful Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians or other denominations behind.
The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius remain an abiding source of inspiration and wisdom for Christians in the modern day who wish to be closer oriented to God and his Kingdom.Ignatius of Loyola was initially a Spanish page in service of a knight, who later became a knight himself. Ambitious and eager for fame and glory, Loyola was gravely injured when a cannonball collided with his legs, leaving his left leg multiple fractures. The surgery of the time was crude; he would walk again, but with a permanent, pronounced limp. As he lay convalescing, Loyola experienced a series of visions. Being as the hospitals of the era were run by religious orders he spent weeks bedridden, reading the many texts concerning Jesus Christ and the saints. This experience buoyed and inspired Loyola to lead his life in the same fashion as the heroic saints; living to spread the holy word and undertake great pilgrimages.
This edition of The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan - Ellen White's history of Christianity - is unabridged with all forty-two chapters, the appendix, and the original notes included.Throughout her detailed and lengthy treatise, White focuses upon the conflict between Jesus Christ and Satan across various periods of Christian history. Beginning with the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, we advance chronologically through the early Christian persecutions, to the Renaissance-era Reformations of Europe, and to the spread of Christian beliefs around the world and particularly to America. In this text, White presents Christian history and events as signifying the cosmic battle of duality between Jesus Christ and Satan. The various incidents described are, according to White, manifestations of this battle on Earth. Key players such as the Papacy, together with various saints and prophets are also described as playing influential parts in the ongoing battle.
In The Discovery of Witches, Matthew Hopkins - the Witch Finder General of England during the early 1600s - details the process by which he found and captured suspected witches.Hopkins' treatise is comprised of answers to various queries he had received by members of the public curious about his investigatory techniques in finding witches. This book answers a total of fourteen queries, with replies ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs in length. The book is an illustrative portrayal of a society fervently given to superstitions about the powers of witchcraft. At three hundred women killed, the efforts of Hopkins and his assistant John Stearne were prolific.Accorded status, Hopkins encountered opposition to his witch finding. That his 'investigations' required scant evidence to secure death sentences dismayed figures in the Church of England. Today, historians judge Hopkins as an opportunist who took advantage of unfounded suspicions to advance his own fame.
This complete edition of the Corpus Hermeticum, which introduces in eighteen chapters the religious and philosophical principles of Hermetics, was translated by G. R. S. Mead.Hermetics is a religious, philosophical, and esoteric practice based around the beliefs and writings of the pagan priest Hermes Trismegistus. Influential for its distinct beliefs and characteristics, Hermeticism carried a profound influence over the Renaissance in Europe. Many Christian believers paid it heed, with much art depicting the Hermetic belief system appearing between the 14th and 17th centuries in particular. Notably, Hermetics claims to be a descended version of the prisca theologia - a principle which affirms there is but one, true theology in the world. This essence of the divine is present in all religions, and was according to legend given to mankind in distant antiquity. This belief, discussed by Hermes Trismegistus, has led many scholars of philosophy and religion to examine Hermetics in detail.
This anthology of anthologies contains H. H. Munro's excellent short stories, derived from a total of six compilations which were published over the course of twenty years.Containing all of his best regarded and famous short tales, as well as a sizeable host of hidden gems and lesser-known treasures, this gigantic compendium is comprehensive and certain to satisfy any fan of the author. The sensual, tantalising and distinctly moral nature of the stories usually rail against the stifling conventions of society - in the end, the natural world (and people acting naturally) tend to come out on top. The recognisable style with which Saki tells his tales make their endings, which are usually surprising and witty, a keynote feature of every story. Saki's ingrained wit and the casually biting nature of the topics he chooses often leads certain characters and the things they represent to ridicule, usually to the great satisfaction of the reader.
The Authority of the Believer urges the faithful Christian to take utmost mindfulness in their deeds and words, that their closeness to the Lord be soundly affirmed each day.A sublime series of reflections upon what it is to be a good Christian, The Authority of the Believer gives the receptive reader much to contemplate. Reflecting on many of the greatest lessons and deeds depicted in the Bible, together with experiences in his won life, John MacMillan shows us just how powerful and capable a true believer in God can be. Faith, purely held and defended against the temptations and distractions of life, is a tool of immense use - the power of Christ and the heavenly Lord can serve as a great support; thus, the Authority of the Believer.John A. MacMillan was a Canadian politician and a preacher who spent his younger years as an emissary to the Chinese and Asian communities of Western Canada, spending time in both Asia and North America where he spread the good word of Christ.
Andrew T. Still's thorough account of osteopathic medicine details the discoveries and cases which contributed to the development of osteopathy.Written and published at the end of the nineteenth century, Philosophy of Osteopathy is a manual which attempts to overview the major aspects of the osteopathic discipline. Although much of Still's understanding is outdated in comparison to modern medicine, his accessible descriptions made this book a valuable reference text for aspiring osteopaths and physiotherapists for many years following its original publication. Chapters generally concern distinct areas of the body, as well as some theoretical questions which - at the time - hadn't received an answer. Andrew T. Still regards good osteopathy as an art form, and thus does not shy away from a passionate tone during parts of the text. Unusual subjects, such as the uses of earwax and the possibility that man has undergone a slow decline in his bodily resilience, lend color to the book.
Daniel David Palmer, the father of chiropractic medicine, sets out the principles of manually correcting disorders of the bones as a panacea for various ills of the human biology. When he founded his practice of chiropractic medicine in the 1890s, Palmer claimed to have received inspiration from a spiritual or divine force. Although Palmer received criticism for frequently voicing this origin, he remained steadfast in his account; for the author, there could be no successful science without religion, and vice versa. The adjustment of the osseous (bone) tissue considered by Palmer to hold spiritual, religious and scientific importance as a remedy. Chiropractic procedures surround manipulation of the musculo-skeletal system, with particular emphasis given to the spine. Such adjustments of the bones are performed with the intent of improving posture, reducing inflammation of tissue, and promoting proper function of the nervous system.
Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit is a groundbreaking work of economic theory, distinguishing between risk, which is by nature measurable and quantifiable, and uncertainty, which can be neither be measured nor quantified. We begin with an analysis of the functions of profit, risk and uncertainty in the economy. Frank H. Knight introduces his work with a discussion on profit and how there are conflicts about its nature between various economic theorists. As the title implies, the author's chief concern is the interplay between making a profit, incurring risk, and determining if there is uncertainty. Risks are different from uncertainty in that they can be measured and protected against. For example a location chosen for a factory or farm may have a measured risk of flooding in a given year. Businesses, insurers and investors alike can be made aware of this, and behave according to the quantified risk.
William Gann, a stocks and commodities trader with ample experience, shares advice to those new to trading on the stock market. As an early work of Gann?s, the Truth of the Stock Tape advises the reader on how to anticipate and react to various movements in the stock market. The methodology Gann employed in his earlier career is more concerned with the psychology of the market. Gann begins by noting how traders with patience and nerve ? backed up by sound evidence that a company is or imminently will perform well ? tend to win out versus the impatient, nervous and flighty investors.Later in life, Gann became famous for supplementing his investment strategies with the use of astrology. He believed that the alignments of the planets influenced how investors behaved on a trading day, and created many courses to demonstrate the effectiveness of his strategy and predictive charts. Gann?s charting strategy attracted a following which exists to this day, with computer software mimicking his methods.

The United States Navy's guide to bugling remains a useful text for aspiring players of the instrument, and for musicians considering naval service - this edition includes every illustration and piece of musical notation.Bugles have been an important feature in military tradition for centuries: on the battlefield as a method of signalling a charge or withdrawal; in the training of soldiers in sounding the times in barracks; and as a ceremonial instrument during military parades, celebrations, funerals and other such events. It was the Navy's hope that many Americans - enlisted or otherwise - would learn the bugle through this guidebook. Over 150 musical notations are printed in this book. Generally speaking, they become more advanced in terms of phrasing and notation as the reader proceeds through the pages. The program lays out a time frame upon which the player should advance his abilities and teaches the basics of musical theory such as the staves, reading notation, and the timing of play.

Growth of the Soil, Knut Hamsun's Nobel Prize winning novel, is an abiding classic of Scandinavian literature. At the time it was published, the literary world was in the throes of shifting to a modernist style. Popular novels were set in the contemporary present, with technological and societal advancements forming part of the narrative backdrop. Growth of the Soil openly displays the conflicts between the old traditions of agrarian society, and the ever-mounting wonders and conveniences offered by modern society. The farmer Isak scarcely acknowledges the values of modern living. Illiterate but capable of carrying out the business of running a farm, he has physical strength and works with his hands. Although initially amazed by Isak's prowess - his wife Inger, who came into contact with modern society when imprisoned for killing her infant due to its birth defect, return to the home much less impressed by the country life.
Lord Byron''s satirical masterpiece, an epic poem which mimics legendary folklore, is presented here complete for the reader''s enjoyment.First published in 1824 to great fanfare, Lord Byron''s Don Juan is a comic reworking of the legend of the same name. In an amusing twist, Byron has Don Juan not as a womaniser, but as a man who easily falls prey to various seductresses. This single alteration gives Byron much opportunity for humour, being as Don Juan''s plot is riddled with his affairs with many women. At the opening of the text Byron famously mocks Robert Southey, a contemporary Romantic poet who held the esteemed title of Poet Laureate for three decades. The barbed verses mock and skewer what Byron viewed as inadequacies in his rival''s form, which Byron himself liberally quotes and maligns. On publication, Don Juan received a generally warm reception for its strident commitment to humour. Over the years the work became considered as one of the foremost achievements of Romantic-era poetry.
This hardcover edition of The Joyful Wisdom boasts an authoritative English translation by Thomas Common, which brings Nietzsche's poetry and philosophy to vivid comprehension.Initially published in 1882 and also known by its alternate title The Gay Science, the arguments within this book are primarily occupied with the philosophical concept that God has died. It is in this publication that Nietzsche first makes his famous statement that God is dead; a phrase which was to become associated with the philosopher during and after his lifetime. For his own part, Nietzsche identifies these writings as being of an intensely personal nature, the poems within expressing feelings at the core of his being. Definitively part of the philosopher's middle period, this work encapsulates the praise of science and intellectual prowess which characterized Nietzsche in the early 1880s. A strong alignment with skepticism and a commitment to innovation with the scientific method, are strongly praised by the philosopher.
The biographic text of St. Anthony is presented complete in this edition for the reader's absorption and contemplation.First published in the 4th century A.D., Anthony the Great's biography was authored by Christian Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. Since its release, the book has helped spread the beliefs, practices and arduous faith of Anthony the Great.A significant progenitor of the monastic tradition, Saint Anthony lived an ascetic lifestyle in the arid lands of Egypt. Although not the earliest of religious figures committed to this tradition, through actions and preaching Anthony helped popularise and spread principles that would contribute heavily to the establishment of Christian monasteries in Europe and beyond. One event in St. Anthony's life was his encounter with the supernatural in the remote Egyptian desert. This occurrence, where the otherworldly presence tried to tempt him from his spartan philosophy of living, is much recreated in Western art and literature.
