The mens toilet door in The Flying Pig bore the legend 'Abandon all hope ye who enters here'. The only hope the women had was avoiding horseflies or frostbite, sitting out in their toilet at the end of the yard.Pub landlord Freddie would reluctantly serve them, but only through a tiny hatch in the snug. Women weren't allowed to drink pints and were expected to keep the noise down.Harriett Plum for one had had quite enough. If Freddie wouldn't change his ways then the newly formedGreater Crouch Temperance Society would close him down. And Harriett had another weapon up her sleeve, a sloe gin that Al Capone would have killed for.Battle lines were drawn and plans made as the Village Fete drew near. Local farmer and idiot Moses took it upon himself to save the pub but would the women care.No. Not really.
One day I had a talk with a friend from my long ago college days. He asked me, "Why don't you write your own books? I know you can write well and I've seen your art." It was the final push I needed to finally write and illustrate my first book. Thanks for the advice, Tommy. The story takes place in two locations that mirror each other -- a classroom on earth and another in heaven. In both places, a student named Arilla strives to be the best that she can be. Like all of us, there have been times when you wanted to be selected and cried out, "Pick me!" We all know how to do that. But, Arilla thought about the process every time she wasn't selected, and made the necessary changes. Eventually, she was selected for the most perfect of all jobs. This story about Arilla is inspired by my grandmother, the first artist in my family tree. Grandma couldn't draw like me, but she was very crafty. Her Christmas presents were always homemade. She made mittens, ornaments, slippers, and a whole lot more for each of her grandchildren. If you were very lucky, you might get a sweater, scarf, or cap. And, each grandchild received a quilt. It was entirely hand-sewn. Anything else was considered cheating.I know it's a grandmother's job to have a lasting impact on the lives of her grandchildren. My grandma certainly succeeded in that. She had a positive influence on each and every person she met. This one's for you, Grandma!

"Growing the Love in Cana of Galilee" is the third book of "The New Way Series." It is based on the first century manuscript "Acts of the Apostles" written by Luke. The first century was a turbulent time of history. Society was changing primarily because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In book one of the series, "Looking Through the Eyes of a Child," you met some of the characters, and in book two, "Hearing the Truth in Cana of Galilee," I imagined how the happenings in Jerusalem began to gradually impact the little village of Cana sixty-five miles to the north. In this book, "Growing the Love in Cana of Galilee," I continue to look at these same characters and watch as they grow to become more like Jesus in how and who they love. The New Way of living caused Orly and Gabriela's love to grow and deepen. As they and their friends followed the New Way, they began to care deeply about those in slavery and treat them in a way that caused others to take notice. This love began to impact the local synagogue and introduced amazing changes."Growing the Love in Cana of Galilee" explores the internal changes that these young adults experienced as they broke with the traditions of the past and embraced the New Way. Their treatment of slaves was not the only radical transformation. Watch as they learn to love not only people of other beliefs, but also a group who were their political enemies and conquerors. Visualize the new followers of Jesus learning to love others the way Jesus loved. There was no Bible to follow. Yet, step by tiny step the Holy Spirit was teaching them to grow in love.I hope you will look forward to watching these same characters discover that following the New Way may take them on difficult paths in "Following the Way in Cana of Galilee," Book 4 of "The New Way Series."
In October 2006, Ruth Wood was a successful singing teacher and singer. By December she was in hospital diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a rare neurological condition, leaving her disabled from the waist down. By the end of January 2007, after another attack, her arms and trunk were also affected. This is the story of the first year of her disability - a tale told with humour and a refreshing lightness of touch. Some of the feedback comments so far : "a good read"; "I couldn't put it down"; "So good to know I'm not the only one"; "I never realised what it was like". She feels it is very important to highlight some of the problems encountered by those who, like herself, are suddenly "struck down" with a variety of conditions, and to bring hope to others who may find it all overwhelming.

There is a lot said about modern preaching and how we need more sermons on hell; I will save that debate for another day. However, there is something else that I find missing from our pulpits: it is the teaching on some of the most compelling attributes of God as found in the Old Testament writings. Before we go any further, I need to make sure that you understand what this study is about. In no way am I telling you that the Old Testament God is different. To the contrary, this study is about our understanding that God is immutable; He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. GOD NEVER CHANGES. And that, my dear sisters, is the point of this study. In many of our modern-day churches we have come to understand God as unconditionally loving and forgiving. Indeed, He is loving and forgiving, but we Christians make a grave error when we assume that God has no expectations or that He makes no demands on His children. In the Old Testament writings, God directly and fully reveals His character and His attributes. As we read the stories, we have an opportunity to witness Him as the Infinite and Eternal Creator. We come to know him as our Provider, Sustainer, Savior, Deliverer, Helper; our All-in-All. We see His love for His people, and His sorrow when they reject Him. We also witness His anger, justice, and ultimate discipline for those who disobey, dishonor and reject Him.As followers of Christ, it should be the heart of every believer to seek and desire to be like Him, but how can we do so until we fully understand who He is?Through this four-part devotional study, you will get to know the Person of "The Ancient of Days" and discover how that knowledge can impact your daily walk with Him in a profound and exciting way.

Spider is a crafty guy in stories across Africa. Sometimes, he plays tricks on people and gets away with it. Sometimes, the tricks backfire and there is a lesson to be learned. It this particular tale, Spider's goal is to get his new market pig across the creek and to his home. It's a task easier said than done. The first spider stories that I gathered were when I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia. At the time, I never thought about the very same stories coming on to the New World with slaves from Africa. Of course, that happened. This tale was inspired by a trip to Jamaica that was meant to be. My mural project was delayed several times, but it just had to happen. Spider tales brought from Africa to the New World have a special place in my heart. And, I've learned that people of all ages enjoy a good story. When I painted two murals with the United States Embassy in Jamaica, I had the very good fortune of being teamed up with Greg Bailey, a Jamaican artist and professor from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston.Greg taught a muraling class at the college. I came to share with his students how my murals have taken me around the world. During that session, I told this Jamaican tale with his class as well as a spider story from my days in Africa. It appears that my stories are as successful with college students as they are with elementary students. Perhaps it's how I tell them? Afterwards, the college art students joined Greg and me in painting two community murals in the Kingston area. It was a wonderful introduction to a tropical island that I had somehow missed in all of my world travels. And, when I think of Jamaica, I have the warmest feelings to accompany that tropical sunshine.

Africa is the Land of Shem is a book that details compelling evidence that the African continent, not Asia or Asia Minor (Middle East or Levant), not the Americas, not Europe or Australia, but Africa, is the true land of the children of Shem. Who is Shem? Shem is a son of the Biblical patriarch, Noa (Noah), and an ancestor to the patriarch, Abram. The land he inherited was and is Africa. Africa was originally called Alkebulan or the Land of the Blacks, the Mother of Mankind, and the Garden of Eden. The word comes from Arabic and various indigenous African languages. Alkebulan was used by the Moors, Nubians, Numidians, Khart-Haddans (Carthaginians), and Ethiopians. The word Africa was introduced by Europeans and came into Western use through the Romans after the three Punic battles (264 BC to 146 BC). The word Africa was initially used to refer only to the northern part of the continent. The Europeans influenced the change of identity from Alkebulan to its present name. For identity purposes, we recognize and utilize Africa. This is the land that was gifted to the House of Abram, Isaaka (Isaac), and Akobe (Jacob). This book reworks the narrative of the Bible using the continent of Africa as the center point and the geographical locations within the scripture and pinpoints them on our modern-day landscapes. We will do this through all events up to the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, and again the Roman captivity. Our goal is to show all the Biblical events that took place on the African continent, which we call the Land of Shem. Additionally, the Kingdoms of "Yasharal" (Israel) and Yawada (Juda), we will show were initially planted in the land of Canaan, which is everything south of the imaginary line that goes from modern-day Gabon, the southern half of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, all the way through Kenya. The book you are about to consume will be truly revelatory and will bring much-needed enlightenment, inspiration, and a general joy to all Africans on the continent and in the diaspora. This work will also bring relief and happiness to all the world in regard to the necessity, beauty, and rich history of the earth's greatest continent, the Land of Shem.

"Following the Way in Cana of Galilee" is the fourth book of "The New Way Series." It is based on the first century manuscript "Acts of the Apostles" written by Luke. The first century was a turbulent time of history. Society was changing primarily because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. After his death, there was no Bible to follow and various groups broke away and began to practice their own beliefs based primarily on tradition. In this book I imagine the characters from the previous books continuing to grow and mature. I imagine their faith being tested by troubles and hardships. They encounter radical teachings that rock them to the core of their beings. We see God calling some of them to leave Cana in order to share the New Way with others - some sacrificially choosing to remain single and traveling to unknown lands, giving up the comforts of home.Jesus said that He was the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Come with me and see how following the Way impacted these young adults in "Following the Way in Cana of Galilee." Watch as they boldly follow the Way by loving people that were considered their worst enemies - the Romans who ruled their homeland. Watch them follow, sometimes reluctantly, but ultimately triumphantly where the Way led them.I hope you will look forward to meeting some new characters and hearing the story of the New Way impacting a much larger city in Galilee almost 90 miles north of Jerusalem. Book 5 of "The New Way Series" is entitled "Searching for Answers in Capernaum."
The Holy Ghost is the Author of the Scriptures; therefore, when we have any questions or confusions regarding the Word of God, we cannot really ask the 'writer' what he meant when he wrote what he wrote. Rather, our questions must be directed at the One who "moved" or inspired the writer to write what he wrote.Only the Holy Ghost knows the 'intent' behind the written word. He had something in mind every time he moved the saints of old to write. Again, when we need clarification on what was in God's mind when he said what he said, we must go back to inquire from the Spirit of God.Jesus declared that the words he spoke were both "Spirit" and "life." (John 6:63). The Scriptures further declare that the "letter" killeth, but the ''Spirit" giveth life (2 Cor. 3:6).Every time the Word goes forth, it is always backed up by breath or Spirit (Gen. 1:2-3). Behind every Word, there is always breath (ruach in the Hebrew language; which translates to mean wind, spirit, or breath). As serious-minded Bible students therefore, we must always go beyond the mere written words on the pages of the Bible, to inquire from the Lord for both the intent, and the Spirit behind every written Word. This is how to get the most out of the Scriptures. This training manual will take you, the reader, beyond the shallow waters, and beyond the letter of the word; it will launch you into the Spirit behind the word, the intent, the integrity and immutability of the Word of God.Get ready! Get ready!! Get ready!!!APOSTLE (DR.) DAYO BROWN.
In this story, two angels are the best of friends. They've been that way since anyone can remember. And, the friendship has helped them both. Hark was extremely shy. He never spoke in public. He only whispered his thoughts to Harold. Harold, not in the least bit shy, blew his horn -- loud and long -- whenever Hark had anything to say. There was just one problem. Harold was terrible with the horn. There was nothing joyful about his noise. But, as the years passed, changes occurred. And, it's those changes that created this memorable story about friendship.Just like with my previous book, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy - All the Days of My Life, this story was inspired by a sermon. In a talk about angels, my pastor talked about how kids say the darndest things. (If that reminds you of Art Linkletter, you know you are old.) Anyway, one little boy said he only knew the names of two angels, Hark and Harold. Hey, you never know when or where inspiration for a book is going to strike. I knew immediately that there was a story there.I love the main theme of this book. Hopefully, we all have people in our lives who support us, believe in us, and encourage us along the way. Neither Hark nor Harold would have reached their full potential if the other hadn't believed in them. My Hark, or Harold, was always my mother who believed in my art for as long as I can remember. When I look at my early drawings, I'm not sure how that was possible. Anyway, this particular book has what I consider the best illustrations out of all of my books, so far.
When did the Pentecost of Acts 2 occur? Is this 'Pentecost' the same as the Feast of the Jewish 'Shavuot'? What if nearly 2000 Years of Church History has been wrong about this? What if, in fact there are 3 'Shavuots', which just mean a Counting of 7 Weeks or 49 Days? What if the Interpretation of Leviticus 23:15-16 has been Obfuscated to not reveal that there is a 'Double-Count' of 49+1 Day and then a Subsequent Counting of 50 Days? What if this New Understanding of when Pentecost of Acts 2 actually coincided with the Feast of the First Fruits of the New Wine? Why is this Topic of importance? It could very well be the Clue to the Timing of the Rapture that will conclude the Church Age Commission and Witness to Jesus. The purpose of this Book is to provide a Compilation of Articles over several Years of 'Discovery' into the Journey of Identifying where and when the True Count of Leviticus 23:15-16 occurred, i.e., the Feast of New Wine, precisely at a 99th Day Count. The challenge that his Book tackles is what is the Start Date? Why? This initial Start Date will determine the exact Day in which the Feast of New Wine, and thus the Pentecost of Acts 2 occurred. But then, which Calendar? There are the Enochian, Solar and Essene Calendars that are hinged upon the start of the Spring Equinox. This is what one does prefer to take into account. However, within this Solar Calendar, there is a Discrepancy as to what constitutes the New Month, the New Year, etc. In this regard, one will explore and use the various Calendar Start Dates to plot-out the 99 Day Count. The other major Discrepancy has to do, also with Leviticus, of how the Count is determined from the 'Marrow after the Sabbath'.The Evidence provided will show how that plays-out in determining the True Day of the Acts 2 Pentecost or 2nd Shavuot'. Lastly, the other main way of deterring the Shavuot, at least the 1st one, that the Jews and Christians agree is the Shavuot of the initial 49 Days or Count of 7, 7's is based on the 'Counting of the Omer'. However, with the New Understanding of the Temple Scrolls found among the Dead Sea Scroll, there is ample Evidence to collaborate the Notion that in fact, there were 3 Feasts of the First Fruit, beyond the Week of Passover.

THE SITUATION: I totally got fired from my job in marketing. Forming a bubble gum focus group with my Grandparents' goats seemed like a good idea at the time. The corporate setting wasn't prepared for it so we got the boot. At that point, I decided to form an LLC and take those goats on the road. I thought to myself, what could go wrong?
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, North American guitarists showed great interest in the compositions of European guitar composers. The guitar works of J. K. Mertz (1806-1856) were clearly favored among the American virtuosi at that time as confirmed in concert programs, in correspondence, and in the numerous American fretted instrument journals, such as Cadenza, Crescendo, S. S. Stewart's Banjo and Guitar Journal, and Etude. This study provides a detailed survey of these sources, as well as collections, archival materials, and manuscripts pertaining to Mertz during this period.Information concerning the life and works of J. K. Mertz and his reception in Europe is followed by an introduction to the guitar in America and an assessment of the stature of Mertz's music in America at the time. Subsequent chapters provide new biographical data for prominent American guitarists including Charles J. Dorn, Arling Shaeffer, Walter Vreeland, C. D. Schettler, C. F. Elzear Fiset, Jennie M. Durkee, Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, William Foden, George C. Krick, J. M. and Gertrude Miller, and Carl W. F. Jansen. Chapters 11-13 chronicle the pertinent activities of these guitarists that resulted in the preservation of significant manuscript copies of Mertz's works.Manuscript copies of three previously lost concert works by Mertz preserved in American collections are described. Further topics included are Mertz in American pedagogical writings, the dissemination of his music, and associations between American and European guitarists. The conclusion discusses the introduction of the music of Tárrega and his followers to American guitarists.
