Baseball was the only thing Jet Brine was ever good at. Well, baseball and slot machines. Except when his moment came, bottom of the ninth, game seven of the World Series, Jet struck out without swinging. Now, years later, he's stuck in a cubicle, haunted by the ghosts of a marriage cut short, and dragging around the remains of his baseball career in a beat-up duffle bag. Then he meets Linda and it seems things might be turning around at last. But old habits die hard and old fears fuel new failures. After a string of tough losses, a solemn promise may be the only thing that can convince Jet to step up and swing away one more time. The Backwards K is the latest inspirational novel from bestselling author J.J. Hebert. Featuring relatable characters facing heartfelt struggles, The Backwards K is for anyone who believes winning begins with having the courage to take a swing.PRAISE FOR THE BACKWARDS K"J.J. Hebert's inspirational sports-themed novel, The Backwards K, follows the efforts of aging baseball great, Jet Brine, as he tries to get past [the] awful defining moment of his baseball career and reclaim his life. Hebert's story examines the concepts of forgiving oneself for the past and finding the courage to start fresh and new... The Backwards K is an uplifting and inspiring tale that is most highly recommended." --Readers' Favorite (5 Stars)"The Backwards K was an excellent read which I found wholly entertaining and enjoyable. Author J.J. Hebert is a well-honed storyteller, who did a superb job of creating a narrative that instantly draws the reader into the emotion-ridden world of Jet Brine. This narrative proved to be an engaging, evocative, insightful and inspirational read ... Will draw a tear, as well as make you cheer. I enthusiastically recommend this book as it is well worth the read." --Pacific Book Review (Starred Review)"[Hebert's] supporting characters come across as particularly credible. More than merely stock players, they feel like real flesh and blood inhabitants of Jet's world. Hebert keeps his prose straightforward and devoid of lyricism. In addition to sounding like it's actually coming from the mouth of a real ex-ballplayer, it also enhances intimacy with, and empathy for his protagonist whose continued use of rationalization reveals an individual under the influence of addiction. Jet's history of lessons learned too late, promises broken too often, and resolve compromised too easily, makes him not just flawed but human. In fact, it is the author's exploration of the human qualities of transgression, forgiveness, and redemption, that raises this tale above the level of mere sports yarn." --The US Review of Books

How can one small-minded, angry person destroy the lives of so many people in her path, connecting them all together in a game of destruction and heartbreak? It is possible, but what pushes a person to enjoy inflicting pain to such an extent, leaving a trail of hate, anger, and defeat behind her, which only seems to make her stronger and more satisfied. Ms. Terri Plotski, owner of the Authors' Book Agency, is that person, who, unknowingly, with a single thread of hate, has connected the lives of a small group of people, bringing them together with one single common denominator. Anger. The anger from this small group of people is building, but it has nowhere to go, or does it? Ms. Terri Plotski, owner of Authors' Book Agency, has gone missing.

Other times, it comes quietly, almost with a sigh of relief. When my wife asked me for a divorce hours after my father's funeral, only the timing was a surprise. I believed the failure of my marriage from beginning to end, along with heartache it caused, especially to my father, was unredeemable. I was wrong. My father was one of the finest men I ever knew. He left me a great example and a cherished legacy, one I couldn't run from, no matter how ashamed I was to face it. Every step I took brought more trouble, though. In those months after my father died, my uncle Nolan helped me discover I needed to make peace with a lot more than Phil Shannon's memory. So I did what any prodigal would do. I decided to go home. Deciding to go is one thing. Getting there is another matter.

This book, while autobiographical in the first part, reflects only a segment of US history when and where the author lived and experienced in his LIFE! Growing up off the shores of an unknown city on the outskirts of Cleveland, Ohio may reflect the very being of a lot of people with an unknown possibility... This book presents collections of "sayings" gives pause to a life of uncertainty when the country was in turmoil, judgments of self and acceptability might cause the most casual reader to wonder why am I reading this, but to dig in to its reflective writings, be it sayings, a poem, or story. The meaning is sincere, and is truly a reflection... Mr. Snee has always tried to be reflective and put in the ease of moods for any setting. Writing this book of collections of many sorts only proves his desire for those who pick it up to just sit, relax, read and don't be scared to "encourage" those around you to make that valiant step in LIFE... "What's Up" is not a passage from a culturally based saying of the times, but a real question in one's own life to ask the very essence of, what is around the corner. Take the flooding in the book from a skeptical sea of turmoil, and drain all that energy into something that can be both refreshing, a boost, and yes keep one's head "above water". Many people go down to the sea to sit, take in the airs, birds, but to the many who have to sit on porches or balconies not so near the sea, this book makes it better for them to just "take a moment" out of their day. Many only wish they had the "Sea Captain", "to show them the way"... So as you read, the quotes have no "app" to ownership, use them and "spread your rainbow" to others through encouragement and desire to the total picture of, "What's REALLY Up....LIFE!" Thank you!

Warrant Officer Daryl Miller was standing beside me as the mission commander briefed the pilots and crew members. Like most of us, he was just a kid, about 24 years old. He did not smoke nor drink, and I had never heard him use an ugly word. He was a great guy, a good pilot and my friend. The mission commander informed us that a Special Forces Delta Team was in trouble and had to be extracted immediately, as they were about to be surrounded by a large company of the North Vietnamese Army. After the briefing we all hurried to the flight line, and in minutes we were on the way. Daryl was the copilot in a UH-1D recovery helicopter; I was flying a UH-1C gunship... The weather was marginal with low clouds and poor visibility. The team on the ground was running for their lives. The radio traffic was going wild as Wolf Pack gunships made a couple of gun runs firing rockets and mini-guns to keep the North Vietnamese Army's head down. The next thing I saw was the helicopter that Warrant Officer Miller had boarded rolling end over end down a steep hill. When it finally stopped rolling, it burst into flames. I could not believe that anyone could survive such a crash, but moments later I saw all four of the crew escape from the burning helicopter, seemingly with no life threatening injuries. The odds said they should have survived. With minutes Miller and two of his crew were killed while being rescued by a U.S. Air Force helicopter, a rescue which they should have survived. -Lance Ham, Warrant Officer, Wolf Pack Pilot, 1968-1969

ERIC BRASHER HATED ME AND I WAS CLUELESS AS TO THE REASON WHY. I think he would have invented a reason to beat me up if I had not accidentally given him one. I did not hate him, even though he constantly made me feel stupid, especially in front of friends. When at school, he would sneak up behind and push me into a wall, or stick his foot out in front of me and make me trip. Before my parents died and the king declared me an orphan, my father advised that someday, even though Eric was two years older, wealthy, and trained in weaponry, I would have to stand up and fight like a man or forever be branded a coward. My father's prediction proved true when I sailed to America and Eric followed.
