Jim Valekis' The Christian in the Cult: And How I Discovered Humanity in Christ uses the author's life story to take us deep inside the culture of the Greek Orthodox Church, Herbert Armstrong's Worldwide Church of God, and modern Evangelicalism. After journeying through three versions of "the only true church," Valekis deftly invites his readers to join him in his ongoing discovery of humanity in Christ and what it can mean for the church and the world.Endorsement:Millions of religious believers will clearly recognize the spiritual journey narrated by Jim Valekis in this powerful story. A son of the Greek Orthodox Church finds himself in Herbert W. Armstrong's Worldwide Church of God, which eventually takes him into more traditional Christianity and out again. Where he ends up at the end of this fascinating pilgrimage will be a big surprise. But Valekis astutely narrates his journey and brings readers along with him to a spiritual destination that includes the whole world. In a religious and political landscape that has become a culture war of all against all, Valekis's final message of oneness and wholeness in Christ is a welcome antidote.¿Andrew Manis, Emeritus Professor of History Middle Georgia State University, Macon, GeorgiaIn your hands is a book that speaks powerfully to both the complexities of living and growing in the Church, and to the way God moves in our individual lives as believers. Through the story of author Jim Valekis, we see a riveting faith testimony passed from one generation of family to another -- across cultures, continents, and denominations. We experience through Jim's journey how our Christian faith can ground us and cover us spiritually, despite a fallen world, broken relationships, and vocational volatility. Jim reminds us that while our conditions and surroundings rise and fall, our steadfast relationship with Christ is All. I commend this book to you. ¿Chuck Proudfit, President At Work On PurposeAbout the Author:Jim Valekis was born in Alabama with a "bouzouki" on his knee. His Greco-American parents raised their family as part of a thriving Greek Orthodox community in Birmingham. As a teenager captivated by the radio teachings of Herbert W. Armstrong, Valekis defied his roots and eventually followed a call to pastor in the Worldwide Church of God. When the former cult transitioned into Evangelicalism, Jim followed, continuing to pastor in Grace Communion International. Most recently Valekis co-founded the vision for the Tipp Center, a faith-based business and resource hub, where he is the chaplain. Jim holds a master's degree in Biblical Studies from Earlham School of Religion. He enjoys hanging out with his wife Becky, biking, painting, and sharing (especially over Greek comfort food) how his new theological understanding connects back in profound ways with the ancient Trinitarian fabric of his Orthodox upbringing, a relational Christ-centered fabric expansive enough to include every human being.

  • av Julie Fillinger

Author Julie Fillinger says, "As long as there's pain and suffering in the world, there's a need for us to tell our stories, and this is mine." In Courage to Live Julie shares the raw, honest story of her survival after the death of her oldest son. She describes her grief journey during which she discovered joy and sorrow can coexist and God's grace is sufficient. She shares practical ways she managed her grief, and discusses what others did and did not do to help during her journey. God's plan for living eternally is her "not so secret" secret for survival. Julie's wisdom and faith inspire courage and endurance through suffering, so you emerge stronger than you imagined, with lasting, sustaining Hope. What Others Say About This BookThough God tells us clearly in His Word that we, as believers, do not grieve as the world grieves, like people without hope, the reality is that we do still grieve. In the pages of Courage to Live: Learning to Live Again After Loss, Julie Fillinger testifies in the heart-wrenching pages of her story to the comforting nearness of God as well as the hope He provides in the midst of our deepest valleys. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 we read that when the Lord compassionately ministers to us in our most profound troubles, He equips us to one day comfort others with that same comfort we ourselves received from Him. Needless to say, there is no one better equipped to comfort and encourage you as you journey through the valley of grief and confusion than Julie.Wendy Speake, author of The 40 Day Sugar Fast, The 40 Day Feast and other books***In his classic work The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis said that "...courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point." In the pages of this beautifully written book saturated in a faith refined by fire, Julie Fillinger models what courage in the face of trauma looks like. You will discover where the roots of courage are planted, and you will see how one can maintain hope for the long haul of life, whatever twists and turns you may face. As you read her story, as you listen in on her process of grief and recovery, you will be accompanied by a wise, vulnerable and trustworthy guide. I was deeply impacted by this book, and believe you will be, as well.Jeff Crosby, author of The Language of the Soul: Meeting God in the Longings of Our HeartsAbout the Author:Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, I lived a good life. I enjoyed college, started my nursing career, got married and had children. The unimaginable event that devastated my world occurred when my beloved son Nicholas died at only 16. By God's grace, I am not only surviving, but also learning how to really live again. Now my mission is to minister and instill courage and hope into people who are hurting, and to help them realize they are stronger than they ever thought possible.

As David Motte states in The Gift of Blarney, "God wants to be involved in our lives. We have the freedom to choose His involvement or ignore His presence every day." In fact, he never reached the stone! While climbing the castle steps, he suffered a cardiac arrest, collapsed, and had no heartbeat for 15 minutes. Those incredible circumstances pale in comparison to the reality that God was in control every second, pouring out His love and comfort. The United States makes significant investments in military activities that are intended to deter Russian and Iranian aggression. These investments have only grown in Europe since 2014, when Russia invaded and subsequently annexed Crimea, and remain substantial in the Middle East despite the overall trend of the United States reducing its forward posture in that theater. The increased importance of deterrence as a military mission raises the question of how the United States can most effectively and efficiently deter Russia and Iran without crowding out investments in its other key military missions--including competing with China in the Indo-Pacific. To support defense planners in crafting effective and efficient deterrence strategies, RAND researchers conducted a multimethod analysis--consisting of a literature review, roundtables with subject-matter experts, quantitative analysis, and a case study of Ukraine--to examine conventional deterrence in two theaters: U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Specifically, the researchers assessed the deterrent impacts of three categories of U.S. operations, activities, and investments (OAIs): U.S. forward presence; exercises and short-term deployments, such as bomber task force (BTF) missions; and security cooperation. In this report, the researchers describe their findings and offer recommendations for defense planners. This research was completed before the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. It has not been subsequently revised.

America is in crisis and we face many challenges, including racial unrest, immigration concerns, and political division, and many Christians are asking what they can do to make a difference in the midst of this confusion. Standing for God in America presents biblical answers to the issues affecting America today: Without a clear understanding of God's Word, we try to solve problems in our own wisdom, yet the Bible tells us man's wisdom is foolishness. To experience God's blessings, we must arm ourselves with His truth and have a clear plan for how to effect change while representing Christ to others. There are many ways Christians can become involved in their communities and across the nation to make an impact for God.Endorsement: If you are a seasoned followerof Jesus Christ, or a new believer, this book is an enlightening reminder that as Christians we are all called to make a difference. Lynn uses the power and truth of God's Word to guide us to a better understanding so that we will be equipped and motivated to make a stand for God in our familiesand communities. Through her writing it is evident that Lynn loves to spend time with the Lord and studying his word.─Darcy Turner Med, Elementary Principal, Faith Christian School Summerville, SCMany Americans believe that our country is in the midst of a moral crisis!
