After an early career in piracy, Mainwaring became one of the most prominent senior officers under James I and Charles I. He took part in most of the naval operations of the period, and during and after the Civil War served with the Royalist Navy.
Leake was Commodore of the squadron to Newfoundland and then became Vice Admiral of the Blue in the Mediterranean campaign of 1703. The volume finishes with a description of his activity at Lisbon where 'Sir John received orders to stop the galleons in Cadiz which he attempts to do but is prevented by the sinister practices of the Portuguese'.
Leake (1656-1720) was one of the most prominent flag officers of King William and Queen Anne' s wars. This continues his Mediterranean command in Barcelona, Cartagena, Mallorca, Ibiza and proceedings at Alicante. There are then his activities in command of the fleet in the Channel in 1707 and the trial of Sir Thomas Hardy.

Monson was a late-Elizabethan seaman and naval commander, retired under a cloud in 1616, who occupied his retirement in composing a number of works on naval affairs. Very miscellaneous notes and memoranda, on the duties of various, officers, organization of ships, exploration and discovery, and many other subjects.
This volume contains documents that date from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The three for the sixteenth century include English piracy against the Spaniards, a Scottish document about a ship getting under way and the taking of the Madre de Dios in 1592.
A collection formed by the Admiralty in its own defence after Byng had allowed the island to fall, but before he was tried. It contains most of the official papers of importance, but the selection naturally supports the official line.
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) made a significant contribution to British history by his work as a naval administrator, and he bequeathed to Magdalen College, Cambridge its greatest treasure - his library, a unique collection of 3,000 books and manuscripts, still preserved as he left it.
