This is not intended as a treatise on the futility of war, because that has been done before by much cleverer people. Neither is it a stirring story of escape, patriotism and bravery, because that too has been done before, by people much better qualified to write about it. This is a perfectly straightforward and true story, of an ordinary young German. Not particularly concerned about, nor interested in politics, but subscribing to the currently held idealised image of the Führer, he was called upon to fight for his country, for the Third Reich, and willingly did so. He was captured in the autumn of 1944, and became a prisoner of war in England. This is the story of his captivity, a light-hearted view. Sometimes a little sad, but often funny. This is about ingenuity in adversity, and how the fatalist more often than not survives all others.

Mark Carroll was for over 30 years a biochemistry lecturer at one of London's premier medical schools. He was introduced to family history by his sister in 2002. His first major project was to research his mother's maiden name, Orriss. Little did he know that it would not be so easy, despite the apparently rare surname. He also did not realise that he would come up against the genealogist's worst nightmare: a Smith family from London! In spite of these challenges he made substantial progress. Along the way he was helped by archivists and by some distant cousins who had been researching the shared family for years. With their combined sleuthing, he and they together took the Orriss line back to a marriage in Suffolk in 1597. But what to do when you hit a genealogical 'brick wall'?In recent years DNA analysis has opened up new possibilities for family historians. With his professional background in human biochemical genetics, Mark was well placed to take advantage of this novel technology. In this fascinating and at times amusing book Mark takes you on a journey to discover the origins of his mother's family. He describes, in an engaging and non-technical way, his successes and failures, the research methods he employed, the skills he developed, and his use of DNA analysis. He has yet to overcome his greatest genealogical challenge - to prove whether his mother's Orriss family is descended from King Alfred the Great!

Friends of St. Nicholas' Church, Thames Ditton are pleased to have commissioned and present this book, 'We will remember them', authored by church member and military historian, Malcolm Cooper, as part of the centenary anniversary of Armistice Day. Malcolm has worked tirelessly, meticulously researching those who came from Thames Ditton to fight in World War One, and ultimately give their lives as part of the war effort. Through Malcolm's endeavors, we can understand the breadth of the sacrifice that the one hundred and seven men and one woman made, the circumstances in which they fought and fell, and something of their background and upbringing. The accounts are insightful, often moving, and allow us to consider the debt of gratitude that we owe. Every year we gather on Remembrance Sunday, either in church, or at the War Memorial on Giggs Hill Green, to say 'we will remember them'. Thanks to Malcolm's efforts, we can now remember them with greater clarity and understanding. The sacrifice of all those who died can be seen and made sense of in the light of Jesus Christ. It was his supreme sacrifice on the cross for us all that conquered death, and opened up the way for us to know eternal life and peace. Let us also remember and give thanks to Him. Rev. Andrew Cowie,Vicar, St. Nicholas' Church,Thames Ditton.

Revealing the Managing Strategies for Individuals and Organisations, in the World of Uncertainty and Change. The text of this book reveals the hidden solutions for leaders of businesses and other organizations, as well as the individuals and families, who struggle to achieve success in the today's world of uncertainty and change. The key question is this, how is it possible to have success, without the ability to deal with the issues occurring with no foresight of knowing them in advance to be prepared or planned for them? The principal issues to deal with include: uncertain occurrences, unreliability, quandary, obstacles, obstructions, disappointments, complexities, unpredictability and all the unknown future situations. These are the major uncertain occurrences which seriously hamper the success of human endeavours for progress. Strictly speaking, they are crucially the natural phenomena and need to be dealt with effectively. In this respect, a critical foresight is seriously required to be able to tackle these prevailing issues failings which will result in being lagged behind without success. It is in this respect that, the book reveals the specific strategies for solutions to these unplanned and unprepared situations seriously required in advance as noted by Maslow. He stressed thus: "Life is moving far more rapidly now than ever before, typically in the rate of growth of facts, knowledge, techniques and inventions. We need a different kind of human being, able to live in a world which changes perpetually - a human being who has been educated to be comfortable with change in situations of which he has absolutely no forewarning. The society which can turn out such people will survive; societies which do not will die" (Maslow 1976:56). Whether we believe in creationism or not, human race has been endowed with the innermost gift to be able to deal with futuristic issues when shown how to, hence this book. As Maslow has indicated, only those human beings with knowledge of foresight that enabling them in managing change effectively will survive.
