Tim Nicholas, Bob Farley, and Gary Jenkins grew up together in a small neighborhood in Pendleton, Oregon. Tim and Bob were eight years old when they met, and Gary came later, an annoying pest who was four years younger and wouldn't leave Tim and Bob alone. They finally grew tired of shooing him away. They enrolled in college, got an education, and returned to their hometown because that's where they wanted to live. In Pendleton, they were adults and soon were adults with jobs, wives, and children. Each man worked hard and was respected by their community. They weren't famous or flashy, just honest and friendly.Instead of being connected by sports as they were when they were kids, they were connected by steelhead fishing, the big brawling fish that swim from the Pacific Ocean into the Umatilla River to spawn.Tim had four children; the youngest, Sarah, was his only daughter and was referred by her older brothers as the golden child. She outgrew her junior high snot-rag stage and was an energetic and intelligent high school student. Her personality could be summed up in one nineteenth-century term: sassy. She would become a US Forest Service smokejumper squad leader with important responsibilities that she handled very well. When the three men reached retirement age, they still fished and camped. Life was good, until it wasn't. One of them had to be the first to die. Bob's story is sad, but he was surrounded by good friends and a compassionate wife. They made sure Bob wouldn't be alone in his final ordeal. Bob's story was not a test of friendship. Instead, it was an affirmation.
Thanks for buying my book! You are going to be taken on a journey that I extracted from my memory, with photos to back up my narrative. The timing is impeccably accurate since I am seeing my mind get a little cloudier each day. Why do I tell you that? "Tell those you love your story. Soon it will be gone."
The story begins in North Carolina. Jacob, the main character, lives on a farm. He worked the family farm and was hired out to other farmers to earn money for the things he wanted. He was an outstanding worker. He was such a hard worker that he stood out. It didn't matter if he was working the fields or falling trees.A middle-aged Caucasian male noticed his work and offered him a live on his property for a job. For a couple of reasons, he accepted the job and moved to the man's farm. He lived in a small house close to the big house. His new chores were chopping wood for the fireplaces and feeding the farm animals.Jacob didn't know that he would be given some other chores to do on the farm. One morning, he was startled by one of the farmer's daughters. This was the beginning of an affair that would upset his life on the farm and send him to Washington, DC.After Jacob and Scarlet's rendezvous changed from hugs and kisses to more, Jacob knew that he had better relocate for his safety. He and Scarlet made plans to be together. First, he would go to Washington, DC to live with his brother and get a job. Then she would come to DC.Richard lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Trinidad across the street from Gallaudet College. Arriving there, his brother welcomed him. Jacob's first two weeks in DC were used to familiarizing himself to his new neighborhood and making a plan to get a job. While learning the neighborhood, he became familiar with several people--a girl named Venus, the Pinkneys, and his brother's girl, Rose.He met Venus on the playground in Trinidad. Rose lived in the same apartment building on the first floor. He met Mrs. Pinkney when he was walking to the Capitol. She had a flat tire, and he changed it. She introduced him to her husband. These people would play a large role in his life. With a new job, new friends, and a safe environment, Jacob began to blossom. He worked in a department store as a clerk. There he met several coworkers. One was instrumental in him staying out late. The other had an effect on his unforeseen future. Living in a Black neighborhood, he felt at home. The change in Jacob was rather sudden. He wanted to dress like the guys his age. With time on his hands, he explored his athletic abilities by playing football. He was given a crash course in how to gamble by learning how to play pool. He learned how to travel in his new town quickly. It seemed to him that all the important things in DC were across North Capitol Street. In going across North Capitol Street daily, he was introduced to other people in Washington. The other people he met along the way also helped him in ways he could not have known. With luck, skill, and a sense of fair play, he became the Black man's version of Superman.
"Letters from Wankie" is a unique true story based on the collection of some 500 air letters the author, British-born Patricia Friedberg, wrote home to England in the mid-1950s, during the first two years of her marriage to her South African physician husband. Together the newlyweds moved to the remote mining town of Wankie in the far northwest corner of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) where he was employed as a colliery doctor. More than 50 years later, after her mother passed away, Patricia found among her mother's papers the bundle of air letters neatly tied and safely stored. Reading through the collection it was evident that the letters contained an incredible, historical account of life during the colonial years as seen through the eyes and writings of a young woman, twenty years of age, who was, unbelievably, even to herself, employed as Clerk of the Court at the Native Commissioner's Office. Despite the enormous cultural differences the young Londoner faced -- the challenging and often shocking exposure to tribal practices and native law -- she carried on, overcoming obstacles with spunk and grit and a saving sense of humor. PRAISE FOR "LETTERS FROM WANKIE" "A gorgeous, touching, tragic tale of a lost -- but now, thanks to Patricia Friedberg -- never forgotten time in a remote corner of colonial Africa." --Douglas Rogers, "New York Times" journalist and author of "The Last Resort: A Memoir of Zimbabwe" ". . . a delightful account of a plucky young woman who takes things as they come and makes the best of them. She effectively uses the device of letters to home . . . Patricia's 'voice' made me smile all through her account . . . like listening to a charming tale told by a good friend . . . a friend you have known forever. Well done!" --Georgia Court, owner, Bookstore 1, Sarasota "What an adventure! I loved this book! I could not stop reading this honestly portrayed, exhilarating account . . . Filled with humour and astute wry observations, this is a delightful trip into the past . . . a valuable slice of history that documents an era now washed away, an insight into a country which was once the jewel of Africa, and now is in ruins." --Paul Williams, Ph.D., author of "Soldier Blue" "An inspiring -- and most satisfying read." --Joan Kufrin, author of "Uncommon Women" and "Leo Burnett, Star-Reacher" ". . . mental scenery that is thought-provoking, instructs and entertains. Exceedingly well done and a pleasure to read." --Marilyn Pincus, bestselling author, ghostwriter and member of the Authors Guild, New York, NY

When my previous pup passed away after eighteen years, children in the neighborhood would ask, "Where is Raggsie?" I thought writing Raggsie Goes to Heaven would not only answer that question but also ease the hearts of anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to a pet.
This is a story about a Navy commander and his hatred toward the Marine Corps. As commander of a patrol boat base in Vietnam, he would do anything to keep his record clean. Even though the Marines were fighting for their lives, Higgins would not send help. Captain Hunt and his men were putting up a good fight even though they had little chance of surviving. About four years ago, I was walking along a boardwalk that helps park goers traverse a beautiful floodplain in one of our city's metro parks. I was watching where I was stepping and not paying attention to my surroundings. For some reason, I stopped looking down and I looked to my left. Staring at me, probably no more than ten yards away, was a huge buck. Here's the weird thing: the first thought I had was, Does he know it's Tuesday? Subsequent quirky ideas popped into my head: Does he go on vacations? Is he thinking of retirement? What if our animal friends thought and acted more like we humans? Wouldn't that be a hoot? I hope these 114 quirkies bring some smiles and laughter into your life.
This book is a sneak peek into my life enlisting as an active-duty member in the United States Air Force. It shares many personal moments as I, at the same time, transitioned into being a single parent. It also gives a positive faith-filled outlook on situations that I have faced over the last twenty years of my life while choosing to be victorious rather than a victim over the things I could not control. My ultimate goal is to plant a seed of hope and joy in others facing similar issues.
In Walking Miracles I talk about the traumas that formed my life and made me who I am today. I chose to write about my trauma and bring it to the world as a means to help others who are going through the same thing. This book is a collection of short stories and poems as well as letters from my abuser, which outline the story of my traumas. In here I created a character known as Grace Hope, who undergoes a lot of challenges against a serial rapist, and in the end she became a symbol of my trauma and how I was able to defeat it despite all the challenges that were thrown at her. In Walking Miracles you will come to an understanding of your own self-worth, as I talk about how I was nothing and meant something more. In here I lost people, dealt with an abusive partner, lived through a physical illness that was undiagnosed for twenty years, and almost gave up hope to the world. Yet I also found the true meaning to life and became closer to those that know me. I hope when you read Walking Miracles, some part of it will stay with you for a lifetime.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a story told by three sisters that takes place in a small community in Ellisville, Mississippi, in the Jones County--also known as the Free State of Jones. It begins with the birth of their mother and her siblings through their adulthood and departure from Mississippi. The center of the story was their mother and the life and time of being her children. She married at the age of seventeen. After finishing the eighth grade, she contemplated becoming a teacher, which was the requirement at that time for being an educator, but she decided that she would teach her own children. And that she did.It has taken almost four years to write this book including the time that they took thinking and talking about it. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly reveals the joys, the tragedies, heartaches, family miracles, disappointments, pains and tears, and southern racism. It spans almost one hundred years, and for them, from what they've heard, seen, and experienced, they were worth putting into words.A lot of this information came from their mother as they would sit and talk. Along with the conversations that the sisters had with everyday life, it was out of these situations that they decided to write this book. Every family has a story, and this is theirs. This book is meant to be a dedication as well as a salutation to each and every member of their family along with close friends and in memory of all those loved ones who had gone before them. Because without them, there would be no good, no bad, and no ugly. It is a southern story.Although a lot of things happened, the coolest and greatest thing besides knowing all of these special people is that they are their family.
Michael, I'm calling your space just to say that from just visualizing you, it's been so long. I'm not sure if I was looking at a little girl's sweet, tender, unique handwriting on a special private drawing with your name somewhere on the picture. It could have been on a poster somewhere stapled as some type of advertisement or perhaps in a magazine or on TV. Wherever it was at that particular moment, I became a serious dreamer. All of a sudden, my entire interest changed....
If all hope is lost, where do you turn?At the lowest point of her life, Penny Blue North decided to give up. She gave up trying to control all the circumstances of her life, to do everything with perfection, to stave off pain, entropy, and death. Without a deity or mythology to count on, she spread her plea to the wider universe: "Send me a message. I don't care what or how." She awoke in the middle of the night, sitting straight up in bed, with these words before her: The message is love. Everything changed after that, and this book is the message. The lessons within are simple and obvious. They also can be the most difficult things we do. Maybe there's something for your soul in this book too.

I wrote this book to show what a great job caddieing is and the many opportunities it affords. It's a life-changing job. If done right by the caddie master, this can open doors to the caddies that never would have happened in other jobs. As a caddie master, I would set up the caddie to put them in the right situation. If the young caddie wanted to be an actor, lawyer, or car salesman or work on Wall Street, you would have them caddie for the members or guests that best suits their future ambitions. It's like a working interview. They can see how hard you work and how you interact with others and how professional you perform your job.As a caddie master, it is your absolute responsibility to inform the college-bound caddies of the caddie scholarship programs that are available. So hopefully, this book can inspire young kids into the great world of caddieing. It's a life changer!--Caddie Master Tim Peel

We need to leave our comfort zone as we look to the future of our lives. In a kind of creation that is made for each of us. This is a given. Yet there comes a time to be profound to some degree as life is always interesting. May all that are reading my words never give up on his or her dreams. We all have goals in our lives. Never give in to negativity. We all have the power within us as we move forward with each new dream in each new day with the start of dawn into the last of the sun's rays. Whatever you dream, go for it.

Darrell is the quintessential thoughtful individual--attentive, reflective, and mindful. It's no wonder that this book has manifested now, and I suspect many more will soon follow--and rightfully so, because he has a way with words that tickles and tests your soul, much like a riddle. And who can resist contemplating a riddle?Darrell carefully mulls over his inspired thoughts, and when he finally shares them, they stir you ever so gently out of a pattern of shallow living and subtly into a desire to go deeper. May the insights of this book inspire you toward perspectives and paths less often considered, and travelled, by others.--Nicola Bullock, author of The Untouchable Girls"Darrell Cummings has a concise, humorous, thoughtful, yet witty way of spreading wisdom and lifting truths that empower our spirits and lighten our load for life's journey.
