In my eighteenth year, I was shipped to Vietnam, where I performed a variety of duties as a lower-ranking enlisted man from October 18, 1966 through October 25, 1967. My aim in this novel was to convey in a fictional account something of the truncated experiences I, and others like me, endured. Like millions of other young men, I submitted to the draft laws of the day. Like many of these young men, my motivations and attitudes were mixed and reflective of the conflicting cultural crosswinds of the time. For many of us, there was a lack of that political and psychological clarity reminiscent of past wars such as the American Civil War and World Wars I and II. Many of the younger men, so recently boys, experienced an air of dislocation as well as surreality that sporadically punctuated the dull routines with unexpected events for which one can never quite be prepared.By design, this fictional account offers no storybook consolation nor reassuring solutions. I tried to convey the attempts by young men from diverse backgrounds to cope and survive in an environment defined not by winning a war of "good versus evil" but by the steady clicking of an alarm clock, which measured each day of a twelve-month tour of duty.Feeling little organic connection to a war officially described as a conflict, we were united not by any global imagination of East versus West or communism versus democracy but by the humble focus on staying alive until our personal "alarm clock" rang out the end of each soldier's twelve-month sentence. We, like other generations of soldiers, doted on packages and letters from home while imagining a return to a world little changed despite the increasingly ominous snippets in the news to the contrary. Our dislocation from the familiar begins abruptly when the arriving jetliner plunges through monsoonal clouds above Tan Son Nhut Air Base. Disembarking from the plane and from social upheavals at home, Rob plunges into a world that is foreign to his experience, full of jarring sights, sounds, and smells more akin to the kinds of dreams that awaken us in the night. He already understands that he has made the biggest mistake of his life. More unsure of himself than he has ever been, he must now submit to powers and controls far beyond his abilities to mediate.
Governance and management have a big problem. Organizations must learn to thrive in our highly interdependent world, even as that world is changing more rapidly and in more unpredictable and uncontrollable ways. Organizations need to become much more situation aware.Situation awareness is a mainstay of air force and military doctrine, nuclear power plant management, aviation, and ERs, among others. These are all disciplines where mistakes in understanding a situation and predicting its outcome may not only be costly but also fatal. Top-Gun Governance adapts and scales insights and practices from the field of situation awareness to promote better sense making and prediction throughout your whole organization.More than "big data," this next-generation governance will help you challenge your decision-making biases, recognize when events and trends are breaking current rules and assumptions, and manage the changes they inevitably bring. This is a book for leaders and those who must see changes with clear-eyed dispassion and create, implement, and sustain a culture of change in a highly dynamic world. How did this book come about? In a word, COVID. How did public health guidance, which had been successful in managing past epidemics, become so contentious? This question led to the following train of thought:Why change programs are so difficult when even simple interventions, like mask wearing, are rejected by large segments of the population, to...Thinking that different situations, characterized by their degree of unpredictability, require different communication and change-management techniques, to...Understanding how cognitive biases take hold and reinforce positions that become very entrenched, to...Realizing that concepts and practices in situation awareness, a discipline used extensively in environments where mistakes can be fatal, could be a good approach, to...Using experience in organization architecture to describe ways in which situation awareness could be scaled to the organization level under the umbrella of governanceSo yes, a somewhat convoluted path but one that I hope demonstrates the breadth and depth of focus in looking at very complex problems and one that informs this book.1
Crispin Aleron was an ordinary mortal man until the night he was attacked and left for dead. A stranger appeared from nowhere, making an offer he couldn't refuse. Offers such as this cannot be without consequences, but Crispin had no time to think it over. Now, centuries later, the consequences are becoming clearer. Spending all these years repaying his debt, doing as the otherworldly Council of Seven demands, he is now dealing with their punishment for breaking their cardinal rule: absolutely no intimacy with mortal beings. Locked away in an asylum inside a monastery where his powers are supposed to be useless, he thinks only of Rose. After a long battle with brain fever, he wakes one morning, realizing some of his supernatural powers have been restored. It is time to break free of the Council of Seven's control and rejoin the love of his life before they make good their promise to destroy her.Rose VanZandt has not seen or heard from Crispin in six months. Her besties, Rochelle and Laura, have different opinions of how to handle Rose's grief. Rochelle is sympathetic and mothers her, while Laura bashes Crispin in an effort to belittle their relationship. But it would seem the universe has something in store for them as well. The ex-boyfriend, Derrick, is of no help, badgering her to take him back and threatening any man who comes too close. Rose fears he has become irrational and dangerous.Returning home from work, Rose and Rochelle meet him, and somehow, Rose knows he is Crispin's brother, Alexander. What she doesn't know is that he has been sent by the Council of Seven to kill her.
My book is very unique and different from others. I talk about the news and what is going on with the government. Other things that I mentioned are my opinions on songs, movies, and shows that Hollywood produces and how they speak to me. My book is similar to my first one, as it has everything to do with evolution and my opinion on why we are all here right now on this planet. My book also covers my life story, and it is all based on facts on the world today. There are different sections in my book, and I tried to focus on celebrities more, hoping that they would reach out to me in person. My book also covers sports topics and how I view sports in a different way than you see in TV. My book has some biblical references, and I like to talk about Jesus sometimes. I mentioned parts about society and also how we can improve society with better rules and regulations. When I talk about movies, these are my opinions and I love watching Hollywood produce good shows and movies. I talked about the news a lot in my second book because I think the news is important and is relevant to our lives. I came up with my own information, but I really do think that the world is so important in today's world. I hope that everyone enjoys my second book.

Romans 8:35: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?"God sent His Son, Jesus, that we may live in Him. He is the perfect example for the world. He paid the debt that we owed for all our sins to be forgiven so that all who believe in Jesus shall be saved. Jesus also suffered. He is teaching us that we should imitate Him to follow in His footsteps, who had no sin, and neither was guile found in His mouth. When we go through triumph or temptation, hate, envy, or persecution that Jesus suffered before us, and there is nothing new under the sun. Jealousy came and killed Abel, and envy and hate crucified Jesus, and God destroyed the people in Noah's time for lust of the flesh, hated and drowned in the flood. Jesus said, "Think not." It's so strange, the fiery trials as though something has happened to you. As Christians and believers, we should have faith, trust, and courage to look up and see where our help comes from.Romans 8:36: "For we know we are killed all day long. We are sheep for slaughter."Romans 8:31: "If God be for us, who can be against us?"
I have many dreams of being a writer, and I love what I do. Let me ignite your mind, imagination, and dreams with the power of my fictional storytelling.
She lost her mom, her infant brother, and her twin, and if that's not enough, she lost her voice. Therefore, it was only natural that after this happened, she would lose her faith in God as well. Nonetheless, the world continued around Mirda, forcing her to adapt. Hurting in ways no one could understand, she went through life just getting by. Little did Mirda know that God wouldn't let her slip away so easily.Read Mirda's story as she rediscovered not only her faith in God, but also her faith in herself, with the help of her best friend, her father, and the love of her life.
"Why are these grown men getting paid millions of dollars to play a child's game?"Inevitably, if you've been around the game of basketball long enough, you've heard some cynical adult ask this question. It seems fair; getting paid millions to play basketball every night in front of adoring fans does sound like one of the easiest gigs in the world. But there's a lot more to it than that.No one has an easy journey to reap the rewards waiting for them at the highest level of basketball. Only 3 percent of high school athletes earn scholarships to play in college, and only 0.03 percent turn pro. Of those 0.03 percent, there are only so many who have successful careers, make the millions players dream of, and don't go broke almost immediately after retiring. There's plenty of elite hoopers, but to make it to the highest level of basketball, you have to be the best in the world. One thing all the elite players have in common are insane work ethics (and sometimes some luck in genetics). Inside this book, you'll find stories of the relentless work and hours that these stars have put in when all the lights are shut off, no one's watching, and it's just them and the basketball. Because, when basketball is someone's only ticket out of a rough life, gang wars, drugs, and violence, you won't believe how good at the game they'll become.
An organization is more than a producer of goods or services; it is part of the fabric of the communities in which it serves. Over my nearly four decades in leadership roles in the financial, nonprofit, and public sectors, I have learned a lot about inspiring and motivating every organization's greatest asset, its people. People, in this case, includes everyone involved with the organization: its staff, of course, as well as its customers and the other stakeholders with whom it interacts in various ways.People have always been the key to the success of any organization. That is even more true today, as technology streamlines our work while also challenging our ability to keep people engaged. Furthermore, with the current labor shortage, it is increasingly vital for organizations to attract and retain top talent.I prefer a servant leadership style, which has suited me well in the many sectors in which I have worked. My strategic approach to growing revenue, reducing costs, and building relationships is to enable and support my team. I view my role as serving, supporting, and working for them so they have what they need for us all to succeed. We also have a lot of fun together along the way! It's about building synergy so that our entire organization's accomplishments are far greater than the sum of the individual efforts.Through my experiences, I have identified seven timeless truths that have shaped me professionally and personally. I call these the 7 Rs of leadership and life.
We are presented with several million options during our life that we have to make a choice between. The choices we make create the way we see the world and establish how we live in it. This environment, which we have created for ourselves, is called our world. Everyone has a world that is unique and personal to them.Of course, our worlds are based on assumptions that for one reason or another, we choose to believe and call facts. We are sure that what we believe takes precedence over everyone else's beliefs, and that can make our world a bit of a challenge to live in at times. I have decided to share my world with the rest of the world. Not to convince anyone that my world is better than theirs but to share some of the things that I found helpful for the world at large. In my eighty-eight years as a well-educated wonderer, many of my assumed facts have been proven wrong. I see that as progress a good thing. The challenge is to be able to accept that one of your lifelong facts just isn't true. I have only a few things that I learned that have stayed true so far and have been stabilizers in my world. I think they can be of use to almost everyone and need sharing.I am not writing this book to encourage you to think like me but rather to just think. There are things changing all around you. So many new things to learn. So many new places to visit. So many edges out there you haven't walked on yet. No matter how intelligent you are, your areas of vast ignorance are greater than your areas of knowledge. There is so much to learn that when you throw your arms up and say, "I know nothing," it will be true, but it is okay. Every other human on earth is in the same situation, they just don't know it.We have robots with Artificial Intelligence (AI) far beyond any human right now that are working for us. What will happen when they decide we are too dumb and of no use to them? I believe this could be a far greater threat to human survival than global warming. What do you think, and why?

Sometimes, life gets stressful. Your boss is a jerk, your job is awful, the rent is due, and your car has a flat tire. We've all been there, and we all hate it. We wish we could have a better job or make more money (because that would solve all our problems), but for whatever reason, we can't. That's life and life goes on, right? Maybe for most of us. But for one ordinary warehouse worker, this couldn't be further from the truth. One day, while at work, he literally falls into a life of luxury. He regularly attends lavish parties and has friends everywhere he goes. His life becomes the polar opposite of what it was like prior to his incident. He becomes someone--someone who can be whatever he wants. He has the world at his fingertips, but at what cost? Are the sacrifices worth the possible gain? With every choice he makes, he weaves his fate into this alternate reality until it consumes him completely.

Inspiration for creativity can come from within yourself, thoughts, feelings, the inner world, or from the physical world, the outer world. The inspiration for the Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I, came from my wife, Debra. She decorates the living room for every Holiday. New Years Eve, Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Her favorite, of course, is Halloween. She dresses as a witch on October 31st, cooks witch's stew for the neighbors, and makes sure the Trick-or-Treaters get special treats. After observing her numerous decorations of witches, skeletons, Jack-o-lanterns, rats, cats, and bats. I began to see images in my head. I needed a hobby anyway. I was tired of watching Mr. Commercial for twelves minutes of a half hour T.V. program. The result is The Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I. Yes, I am a kitchen table artist.I hope it is a source of visual entertainment, an inspiration to craftsmen and women to create Halloween or seasonal artwork. It would be an excellent seasonal coffee tabletop book. Or you can take a page, frame it, and hang it on the wall.I hope you enjoy The Illustrated Book of Halloween, Vol. I as much as I did in its creation.
Pere was born into a middle-class family. His father was the chief priest of the community shrine. Although he was a brilliant boy in his primary and secondary school days, he was not able to go to the university because his father's magnanimity turned out to be a disfavour. His creditors could not pay up. He struggled through life until his father arranged his marriage. Although this marriage was blessed with children, it was a tumultuous one. It was an arranged marriage that was meant to raise children of average or more-than-average heights because the father, the mother, and Pere were below the average heights. Ebiere, the wife, was a tall girl from a family of tall individuals. The marriage was devoid of courtship, which was a foundational error. The marriage crashed irrevocably. He lived a parlous life until he met a mentor, Ebuka, whose financial assistance and pieces of advice pulled him out of the woods. His first daughter, Jennifer, met her choice and got married to him after a period of courtship. This marriage almost followed that of Pere and Ebiere, her parents; but luckily, there was a detour. They were able to settle themselves and remained married for life. The two marriages remained a contrast.Pere became a Christian convert after the gospel of change that was preached to him. He became the Achilles tendon of the church that he built. He wished his parents were alive to see the difference between traditional religion and Christianity.

In Search of the Beanstalk is a memoir about the family history and life of Jack Griggs and was written to preserve some of his family's history by recounting some of the amusing events and episodes of their humble beginnings and their journey to self-sufficiency.The family ancestry hails back to Scotland and the Cherokees of North Carolina. Although they were "poor," the family persevered through many hardships, but they seemed to always see the humor in what would have seemed to be unbearable circumstances. Levity made many of them tolerable, and the stories were retold many times at family gatherings.Jack, despite the many obstacles he faced in his early life, grew up to be the first in his family to graduate from college and earn not one but two master's degrees along with becoming a successful public servant devoting forty years to law enforcement. The book covers his family background and life from birth through adulthood. Jack recounts his tumultuous childhood in and out of orphanages, almost constantly changing where and who he lived with during his early years. He attended five different high schools. He served in the United States Air Force and had many jobs in his life until he ultimately began his career in law enforcement culminating in his last two jobs as a police chief in California before his retirement. With a phenomenal memory for details, Jack shares many anecdotes about his life growing up and his law enforcement career.
Take Me to the RiversBoating the Rivers of America from Wisconsin to FloridaBoating down the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee-Tombigbee Rivers, and Mobile Bay to the Florida Intracoastal in the fall of 2018 might be described in retrospect as a series of near misses. The river conditions were extreme, characterized by the worst fall flooding in recorded history. And at the end of our trip, the strongest category 5 hurricane ever to make landfall, Hurricane Michael, engulfed us within its eye.Take Me to the Rivers chronicles my husband's and my fifteen-hundred-mile journey by boat to both remote and well-traveled parts of some of the greatest rivers of America. Setting out on a course to Punta Gorda, Florida, we began our river adventures on the Upper Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wisconsin, continuing all the way through St. Louis, Missouri. We then found ourselves in the wild and ruthless wilderness of the Mississippi River up to the junction of the Ohio River. We traveled up the Ohio to the Kentucky Lakes, where we rested for several days and got a glimpse of the elegant and pampered side of river boating. Continuing south, we entered remote areas that had yet to be charted in GPS. Traveling on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Rivers, through Mobile Bay, we finally arrived on the Florida Intracoastal. In October 2018, our trip was cut short abruptly and with finality in Panama City when Hurricane Michael destroyed our boat and our dreams of boating our way through retirement. The book is written as a series of everyday short stories--stories about the people we met and the rivers that tried to swallow us alive. With its in-depth descriptions, it provides interesting insights for Quimby's Guide travelers as well as for those who have only been able to dream of boating from Wisconsin to Florida. In addition, the uniqueness of the river people we met on this journey and the extreme river and weather conditions we lived through will make this book appealing to an adventurous and curious audience.Highlights that stand out in the author's mind include a 360-degree fascination with the Mississippi River bluffs, the World War that was averted with an LST-325 Navy warship, our only tourist trap destination in Hannibal, Missouri, the incredible spectacle of the St. Louis Arch, dining at Bobby's Fish Camp, the winners and losers along the Kentucky Lakes, the statue of the Mistaken Klansman, floating bollard mastery techniques, and Hurricane Michael in Panama City.As much as I loved writing about these and other stories, our close encounters with the people we met along the way are the lifeblood of the book. It was a matter of life and death on the rivers in the fall of 2018. Many people shared their lives with us on this journey; many people helped to save our lives--the lives of total strangers.
