On May 12, 2008, a Magnitude 8 earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province, the deadliest tremor to hit China since 1976. Felt as far away 288 as Beijing and Shanghai, the earthquake took nearly 70,000 lives and made an estimated 5 million people homeless. Drawing concern and aid from all across China and throughout the world, the earthquake summoned an unprecedented spirit of cooperation as people swarmed to the affected areas to assist in relief efforts. At the same time, the disaster laid bare weaknesses in the system, as well as conflicts and resentments that had long been festering beneath the surface of rural society. Carrying out research on rural governance in one of the affected counties at the time, the writer Yefu stayed behind to observe how local officials dealt with the aftermath of the disaster. Through a combination of sociological observation, historical anecdotes and stirring narrative, Yefu describes efforts to rebuild not only the physical structures of the disaster zone, but also the spirit of its inhabitants.

  • - Exploring the Circular Economy Revolution

    453,-

What is a circular economy? A circular economy is an economic system that is based on the use and reuse of resources. It is an economy that seeks to minimize or eliminate waste. In a circular economy, products and services are designed to last a long time and be easily repaired, updated, or reused. A circular economy is in contrast to the traditional linear economy, which uses resources, converts them into products, and then discards them as waste. In a linear economy, waste is a major problem. It pollutes the environment and depletes natural resources. A circular economy offers many benefits. It helps to protect the environment, conserve natural resources, and promote economic growth. Principles of a circular economy There are three main principles of a circular economy: Design: Products and services should be designed to last a long time, be easily repaired, and be reused.Flow: Resources should be used and reused in a closed loop.Renewability: Resources should be renewed so that they do not run out over time.Examples of a circular economy There are many examples of a circular economy in action. For example, many companies are now designing products that are easy to repair. Apple recently launched a new repair service that allows customers to repair their iPhones and iPads at home. Another example is reuse. Reuse is an important part of a circular economy. By reusing, we can reduce waste and conserve resources. For example, we can reuse plastic bottles by recycling them or donate old clothes.

What are galaxies? Definition and observationThe sun, moon, and the millions of billions of stars that we see in the clear night sky are all part of a vast structure called a galaxy. Galaxies are the basic building blocks of the universe, and they contain stars, gas, dust, and dark matter. Our own galaxy, which we call the Milky Way, is a spiral shape and contains about 200 billion stars. The study of galaxies plays an important role in understanding the mysteries of the universe. By understanding these vast structures, we can gain information about the birth and death of stars, the evolution of the universe, and even the potential existence of extraterrestrial life.Let us now know in more depth what galaxies are and what their structure is like.**Types of galaxiesGalaxies can vary greatly in size and structure. They are generally classified into three main types: - Spiral galaxies: These are the most common type of galaxies, with a shape like a flat disc, with a bulge in the middle and spiral arms extending from it. Our galaxy is also a spiral galaxy.Spiral galaxies- Elliptical galaxies: These galaxies are football-shaped or egg-shaped, with no spiral arms. They are generally more massive than spiral galaxies.- Irregular galaxies: These galaxies do not have a regular shape. They are often the result of collisions between galaxies.Irregular galaxies**Structure of galaxiesThe structure of a galaxy is determined by its type. Spiral galaxies have a central bulge, from which spiral arms extend. The bulge is made up of old, red stars, while the arms are made up of younger, blue stars. The arms are also home to a lot of gas and dust, which is where new stars are born.Elliptical galaxies do not have spiral arms. They are made up of old, red stars, and they are generally more massive than spiral galaxies.Irregular galaxies do not have a regular shape. They are often the result of collisions between galaxies.

A searing, vital investigation of the Republican Party's dangerous campaign to rewrite history in real time, from the Emmy Award-winning Rachel Maddow Show producer and bestselling author of The Impostors."There is nobody...who has more influence on the way I think about politics than Steve Benen." --Rachel Maddow For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes.Today, as America's Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it's not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script. Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history--and not just from generations past. Unable to put a positive spin on Trump-era scandals and fiascos, GOP voices and their allies have grown determined to rewrite the stories of the last few years--from the 2020 election results and the horror of January 6th to their own legislative record--treating the recent past as an enemy to be overpowered, crushed, and conquered. The consequences for our future, in turn, are dramatic.Extraordinarily timely and undeniably important, Steve Benen's new book tells the staggering chronicle of the Republican party's unsettling attempts at historical revisionism. It reveals not only how dependent they have grown on the tactic, but also how dangerous the consequences are if we allow the party to continue. The stakes, Benen argues, couldn't be higher: the future of democracy hinges on both our accurate understanding of events and the end of alternative narratives that challenge reality.

Water molecules have both positive and negative poles. Those poles let the molecules form bonds between other polar molecules, reciprocally connecting positive and negative poles. Oil molecules are nonpolar; therefore, the charges are spread equally across the molecule. Thus, without a positive or negative pole, oil can never be bound to water. If you put oil and water in a container, the water molecules group separately from the oil molecules, forming two distinct groups. This is spiritually like what happens with the Church and the world. They are to be separate. Christians find themselves in a world to which they do not belong and to which they cannot adhere. They belong to another world. They are citizens of heaven.Confusion in the Church runs rampant today, resulting in double-mindedness. Churches and denominations are splitting and fading away because of disagreements about what constitutes sinful living and whether the Church should affirm sinful lifestyles. As a result, Christians are breaking away from the Church and having difficulty discerning right from wrong. Could it be that the Church has lost its way because it has ignored one of the preeminent principles of godly living, to remain separated from wickedness and unto God? In the following pages of this writing-in the way of a 12-week biblical study-I will address the answer to precisely that question. I will explore the inherent make-up and mission of the body of Christ as it has been systemically laid out in God's holy Word, the Bible. Put another way, this book will explore the purpose of the Church, according to the Word of God, which relates inextricably to the mission and purpose of each genuine believer. The opening conversation introduces whether the Church should affirm same-sex marriage. While that hot-button issue is taken to task, it is not the book's only issue-or the primary focus. The primary issue being driven home is the rightful place of holiness over sinfulness in our lives, especially in the life of the Church. Therefore, the scope of this writing is against all sinfulness and for holiness to reign throughout every aspect of the believer's life. What you will find here are biblical insights and principles that highlight how the Bible consistently continues spreading the message that God's people are to remain holy and separate from the world and sin. As the gospel truth of all this is unpacked and explored, some of it will shock you. Other parts of it will convict you. But, if you receive what is being taught here, you will find a renewed hope and zeal that overwhelms you and prompts you to become even more transformed into the likeness of Christ. It will take hold of you and will resonate in your heart and mind like never before.

    - The Culture, Science, and Humans Behind the Groundbreaking Approach to Elite Endurance Performance
    av Brad Culp
    267,-

Find out how a sparsely-populated country came to dominate the world of endurance sports and get a blueprint for high performance. Norway has long stacked the field with champions in sports like Nordic skiing and sailing, but a new generation of athletes has arrived on the endurance scene, smashing records and grabbing medals in running, cycling, and triathlon. Sports journalist Brad Culp unpacks the rise of the Norwegian method and its meticulous scientific protocols, which upend long-held beliefs about training and performance. With its rugged terrain and harsh weather, Norway has a way of hardening competitors for any test. Culp explores the how the Scandinavian culture imbues a unique biopsychosocial approach to performance. He also introduces the athletes, coaches, and scientists who are shaking up the world of endurance sports. Their secret? Plenty of volume at low intensity, punctuated with hard-fought double-threshold workouts, which seems to turn workhorses into winners--they know when to hold back and when to go all-out. The Norwegian Method is a real-life story of how discipline and determination can be employed to overcome seemingly impossible odds and achieve breakthrough performances. Culp drives this point home by introducing U.S. pros who have reconfigured their training to look more like that of Norway's Jakob Ingebritgsen and Kristian Blummenfelt, and how endurance athletes can adopt the same methods in their own pursuit of high performance.

Marginalized Voices in Education: Definition and IdentificationIn the context of education, marginalized voices refer to the voices of students who are often ignored, suppressed, or excluded from the mainstream of the educational system. They are those groups in society who are denied opportunities, resources, and support due to their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, or personal context. Their voices are less heard, their experiences are overlooked, and their needs are given less priority. The definition of marginalized voices is complex and multidimensional. It can apply to different groups and individuals in different ways, and it can also change over time and with society. However, there are some key factors that help identify people who experience marginalization in education: 1. Socioeconomic Status: Students from low-income backgrounds, disadvantaged backgrounds, limited resources, and poor housing conditions are often less successful in the educational system. They may have limited access to educational materials, technical support, and extracurricular activities, which affects their learning ability.2. Disability: Students with any type of disability often face barriers due to a lack of adapted tools, support services, and accessible environments. The education system often fails to meet their individual learning styles and needs, which marginalizes them.Other factors that can contribute to marginalization in education include: - Race and ethnicity: Students from minority racial and ethnic groups may face discrimination and prejudice in the educational system. They may be placed in lower-quality schools, have less access to advanced courses, and be more likely to be suspended or expelled.- Gender: Girls and women may face discrimination and limited opportunities in education in some parts of the world. They may be denied access to school, forced into early marriage, or discouraged from pursuing certain subjects or careers.- Sexual orientation and gender identity: LGBTQ+ students may face harassment, bullying, and discrimination in the educational system. They may be denied access to safe and inclusive school environments, and they may be forced to hide their true identity.- Language: Students who are not fluent in the language of instruction may face challenges in the educational system. They may have difficulty understanding the curriculum, participating in class discussions, and accessing support services.

The word "atmosphere" has a broad meaning, from the air we breathe to the invisible layers that surround planets. It is a mixture of gases and other particles that surround planets, held in place by gravity. Some planets, like Earth, have atmospheres that are suitable for life, while others are harsh and lifeless. The atmosphere controls a planet's climate and plays a critical role in planetary studies.Atmospheric compositionThe composition of the atmosphere varies from planet to planet. Earth's atmosphere is primarily composed of nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), argon (0.9%), carbon dioxide (0.04%), and other gases. Other planets have different compositions, depending on their formation and evolution. In addition to gases, the atmosphere also contains other small particles, such as dust, clouds, and water vapor.Atmospheric layersThe atmosphere is divided into several layers, each with its own distinct properties. The troposphere is the lowest layer, where most weather occurs. The stratosphere is the next layer, where the ozone layer absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The mesosphere is the third layer, where temperatures decrease with altitude. The thermosphere is the fourth layer, where temperatures increase with altitude. The exosphere is the outermost layer, where the atmosphere merges with space.
