  • - Poems from the Seas and Shores
    av Devendra Bhatnagar
    199,-

Of Dreams and Mermaids is a meditative canvas of verses from the seas and shores. A roadside bench could be the hero in one and God Himself in another. A petal takes centre stage but then so does the City itself. When one is humbled by a storm at sea, the answer in the other is sought through a lively easel. Without preaching, the poems gently guide you into realizing that the everyday is as precious and beautiful as the exotic and the adventurous. Some beautiful colour photography from around the world accompanies this very special book of verses.

This book is primarily about the Rgveda, the avowed source text of all Hindu religious texts. It is a collection of 1028 mostly unrelated hymns. The language in which it is composed is known as 'Vedic', from which Sanskrit is believed to have evolved later. About a fifth of the poems are prayers addressed to what could be 'Nature Gods'. Others cover a motley of subjects. About fifteen of these hymns relates to cosmogony, but differing in essentials. Vedic clearly belongs to the Indo-European language family. Apart from many cognate words that are common in all these languages, many of the stories mentioned in the Rgveda have a strong resemblance to mythologies in the other languages of the family; not just to the Zoroastrian ones, but also to those of Greek, Celtic, Nordic, Slavic, Hittite and others. Origin of Vedas also discusses a wide range of issues related to the origin and expansion of the Indo-European language family. The author has managed to collect together a lot of information about the Rgveda; some of which most would not have heard about earlier. Those interested in these may go through chapter 4 and 9.

  • - Colonialism, Politics and Art in Wajid Ali Shah's Lucknow
    av Biswadeep Chakraborty
    162,-

Lucknow is a city with magnificent history, architecture, culture and literature where once great musicians, poets and artists were patronized by the rich city elites and Nawabs, who made it the mecca of Hindustani art and culture. This book speaks of the rich tradition, history and culture during the final days of Lucknow's last Nawab, Wajid Ali Shah, through Satyajit Ray's major motion picture Shatranj Ke Khiladi or The Chess Players. In this book, Ray's narrative and socio-cultural representation of Lucknow are pitched against the original work of Munshi Premchand's short story by the same name, from which it was inspired. This work attempts to study Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi in light of the actual historical events of nineteenth-century Lucknow, just before its annexation by the Raj. This work will analyze that period as depicted by Ray on celluloid, and the theme broadly highlights or rather studies the 'Imperial Manliness and Colonial Effeminacy', 'Politics of Annexation', 'Decadent Royalty' and 'Evolution of Performing Arts' during the reign of Wajid Ali Shah.

  • - The Never to Be Forgotten Empire
    av S R Ramanujan
    159,-

The Vijayanagar Empire, which was headquartered in present-day Hampi, Karnataka, is acclaimed in pre-modern history as the most powerful kingdom to arrest the onslaught of Moghul invaders in the South for nearly two centuries. Its rulers were known for their valour in taking on the Sultans from the North. Further, the rulers of Vijayanagara were great patrons of Hindu culture and civilization and were known for their military and administrative acumen. They patronized fine arts, music, dance and temple architecture. Despite their glory, there are conflicting records of the empire's history, right from the inception of the empire to its collapse. There are some apologists who even contest the fact that Sage Vidyaranya founded the empire to defend Hinduism and its values. Others, foreign tourists who visited the empire, were not wholly appreciative of the rulers and exaggerated their weaknesses if any. Influenced by their religious allegiances, these visitors were often biased and tended to base their narratives on hearsay. Modern historians too have descredited the empire so as to nullify the role of religious bigotry. They came up with theories that do not truly represent the true spirit and culture of this great empire. Which narrative is the most accurate and who has curated the history of the Vijayanagar Empire in the most succinct way? This book only tries to analyse various theories about the Empire and tries to give a perspective on such controversies.
