  • - Natural Forces: Design & Craft of a Nova Scotian Architectural Identity

    521,-

Working primarily in Nova Scotia, Canada, where proposed projects tend to lack large budgets or extraordinary resources, Peter Braithwaite Studio pursues novel and unique approaches to otherwise ordinary vernacular assemblies and humble material palettes. Acting as both the architects and the builders, Peter Braithwaite Studio draws inspiration from the place in which the work resides and strives to create engaging sensory experiences without the requirement of expensive materials or complicated assembles. The results are beautiful yet familiar forms that both respect the natural landscape and forge new paths within Atlantic Canadian architecture. This first monograph from the firm contains 10 built projects and 10 projects in the development stage that are expressed through sketches, construction images, physical models, and professional images captured by Canada's leading architectural photographer, Ema Peter.

  • - Conversations with the Land

The first book by father-and-son team Stan and Jess Field reveals an inspirational collection of projects that balances the beauty of human creation and the purity of natural systems. The Fields bring a vision of architecture that is deeply connected to the land such that each of the buildings in this volume forms a symbiotic relationship with the distinctive landscape that inspired it. The living environments unfold as a series of closely choreographed spatial and sensory experiences. Each reflects the alchemy that occurs when buildings and their natural settings are intimately intertwined, as these buildings are. They not only capture--but also elevate--the ineffable feeling of living with the land. Conversations with the Land follows the architects' journey of exploration across the places and events that influenced their creative process. From their native country of South Africa to their adopted home in Northern California, Stan and Jess learned how to pair architecture with natural terrain by examining its range and diversity. This book captures the insights and moments of discovery gained from their encounters with the land. The Fields' responsive approach and meticulous execution extends to every element of their architectural practice, from considering the way that a tree casts a shadow on a wall to carefully orchestrating a project to minimize the impact of construction on a site. The book includes a Q&A with Stan Field; an essay by Jess Field on his sources of inspiration; sketches and models that they use as design tools; and a portfolio of 10 exquisitely crafted houses shaped by the imprint of the natural world and beautifully documented by acclaimed photographers Joe Fletcher and Matthew Millman.

  • - Warren Schwartz

In this enchanting volume, a combination of an artist's sketchbook and an architectural design statement, Architect Warren Schwartz, a Founding Principal at the renowned Boston based firm of Schwartz/Silver and lead architect for the Shaw Center for the Arts and Tanglewood House among many other works, explores how music has influenced his practice. Looking back over his career and life experiences, Schwartz remembers how specific live performances, composers, musicians and pieces of music inspired many of the shapes and forms that would subsequently appear in his architectural plans and designs, and shares the drawings he immediately sketched out in these moments of transportation, pairing them with the works of architecture for which they provided the basis. A tone poem by Strauss is thus revealed to flow through Schwartz's designs for the National Music Museum, and Nuages by Debussy in his plans for Exhibition Bridge. The Shape of Music is both a work of art in its own right and an insightful glimpse into the creative process of an architect at the top of his game.

The distinctive feature of Axel Nieberg's architecture lies in his sublime use of light in combination with a natural materiality. His expressive buildings follow minimalist lines of thought. Light is the decisive design approach for him.

Glenn Sestig, born in 1968 in Ghent, Belgium, graduated from the Henri Van De Velde institute in Antwerp and in 1999 established his practice. From the outset, his work focused on extreme precision, on a construction with such mastery of the architectural line, proportions and perspective that it is easy to forget the careful consideration that will have gone into his design and creation. In addition to the material and its interpretation, transparency and the play of reflection suggest rather than illustrate the endeavors that have resulted in the real grandeur of some projects, primarily places for public use.Glenn Sestig Architects is synonymous with contemporary elegance. Their work can be seen as monolithic and intuitive but always with a strong refined architectural identity. The cohesion or even clash between different exclusive and unique materials elevates this identity. Therefore the architect uses his own method of calculation, a sort of mental model from which flow the intelligence, equilibrium and soul of a place. Each completed work is considered as a minor work of art wherein art, fashion and music are essential sources of inspiration. The architecture is no longer a movement in time but becomes a declaration of a clear architectural vocabulary.

A fascinating look at an outstanding example of outdoor living architecture and design.Pavilion Living looks at the architecture of three recently completed pavilions by Peter Zimmerman Architects on the gardens of a large private house on Philadelphia's architecturally rich, historic Main Line, and the associated characteristics that accompany these beautifully conceived and carefully built structures. Located on a portion of what was once the extensive property of the Ardrossan Estate, an early 20th-century Georgian Revival mansion by Horace Trumbauer, the new pavilions accompany one of the next generation of houses that can now be seen on the rolling hills of the historic manor. The owners who commissioned the pavilions have taken on the responsibility of maintaining the land and character of the property as serious patrons of art, architecture, and landscape. Yet these new buildings also enhance the landscape, providing richer experiences in closer connection to nature, celebrating in fresh and harmonious ways the property's extraordinary history and the family's desire to enjoy the simple pleasures of life outdoors. Replete with more than 200 photographs and detailed architectural illustrations, Pavilion Living encompasses architecture, patronage, and the art of benessere (well-being) with the aim of serving designers and homeowners seeking similar solutions to meaningful outdoor living.
