The series of books on Medical Mycology is the result of studies, classes, seminars and presentations prepared for undergraduate and postgraduate students and health professionals. The main aim is to consolidate knowledge and coordinate learning based on relevant scientific and literary productions on the subject. The way in which each mycosis was grouped and categorised was based on the general principle of fragmenting the content as much as possible so that it could be visualised and understood when added to other scientific productions and publications. As a spokesperson for the new generation of medical mycologists, firstly, we aim to bring the spotlight back to the field of fungal diseases, attracting the attention of the public health spheres to the important and considerable pathologies that affect the population and remain neglected. And secondly, through a didactic and enjoyable read, to attract new and promising academics to the field of mycology research.
Currently, the final disposal of municipal waste (MSW) is a problem that affects people's health and the environment. Some controlled sanitary landfills have the disadvantage of producing liquids with high levels of contamination as a result of biological decomposition, called leachates, so it is necessary to apply environmentally friendly decontaminants to control these effluents that are discharged into water sources. Thus, given the importance of this problem, the present research, which was carried out in the landfill pool of the Mejía Canton, Province of Pichincha, has the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of chitosan as a remover of the different heavy metals contained in the leachates. These liquids were previously treated by the FENTON advanced oxidation method, which is applied by combining an oxidizing agent, Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) with a catalyst of Ferrous Sulfate heptahydrate [Fe (SO4)].7H2O.
The important thing in each communication system is to develop and favor, through the use of the computer, the functional aspect that will allow the students to be self-sufficient in the communicative acts that they will have throughout their lives. Although the work turns out to be very risky due to the fact of attending to several communication systems at the same time, the result would be more satisfactory, because in spite of the constant limitations, the main objective was never lost sight of and this was a powerful stimulus to continue with the work.
This book presents the results of research carried out between 2007 and 2008 with babassu coconut breakers in the Araguaia-Tocantins region, which aimed to understand the strategies, practices and representations of these rural workers with regard to the protection of their traditional knowledge. The text is based on the need to deepen theoretical debates on the impacts of the rapprochement between the capitalist world system and the world system of traditional populations, realising the nuances of this intercultural relationship that suggest a path beyond the protection/deculturation dichotomy. This opposition has characterised discussions on the subject of protecting traditional knowledge, with debates falling into a naive, or perhaps self-interested, affirmation of the fruitfulness of the relationship between the logic of capitalism and traditional cultures, or an outright denial of the positive relationship between capitalism and native populations. It shows that these intellectual positions admit a false duality that does not always take into account the particularities of the economic life of traditional peoples and communities.
In times when competition is becoming increasingly fierce, it is normal for new business models and types of companies to emerge all the time, a fact that increasingly accelerates organisational and economic developments. As part of this context, it should be remembered that entrepreneurship is necessary and staying in the market essential, but always with business ethics as an important guideline. Entrepreneurship and ethics are two essential factors for good and continuous performance in the market, bringing unique attributes to companies and professionals who have them as a daily premise.
This research is a case study conducted in the city of Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, where two Afro women of two different generations were interviewed in order to learn their life stories and identify the tensions that arise when trying to preserve their culture, their identity and at the same time how they have grown over time. For the development of the study, three fundamental concepts related to each other were addressed, which serve as support for the achievement of its purpose. These are: Gender, Culture and Family. These concepts are articulated in the social and daily dynamics of the communities approached from different perspectives, which is why in the review it is important to identify elements that contribute to the purpose of the research on the role of Afro women today in relation to their origin and conservation of their cultural values.
The researcher, the scientist, or simply the curious, never stops being curious; the classroom then becomes a laboratory in itself. Like all research, the action of teaching must have a plan, the structure of which can be found suggested and contained in the entrails of this friendly work.A book that teaches you to learn is an interesting book. A book against the current, which gives you independence even in the solitude of a secluded terroir. Such books are not welcome in this world of asymmetries, whose supposed owners prefer recipes and pamphlets. So, let us treat this new book-friend as what it is, an insurgent, rebellious material; possibly subject to criticism but ignoble if it is of a destructive or persecutory nature. Let us keep it in good custody, and I suggest, dear reader, that we learn by heart the fundamentals of it and always practice it; in all our investigative actions, even the non-academic ones. Thus, these recommendations, method and knowledge cannot be separated from us in any circumstance and will be of great use to you in your research.
The high mortality of bats due to impacts on wind farms has raised concern worldwide. This phenomenon may be even more serious in a megadiverse country with important knowledge gaps like Brazil. In order to create a tool to help reduce this conflict, we generated a map of the sensitivity of bats to the impacts of wind farms and evaluated the areas of conflict in the current and expansion scenarios of this sector. For this, we performed a deductive modelling of habitat suitability that allowed us to refine the information on the distribution of these animals in the country, and we analysed functional attributes and landscape characteristics that are related to the risk of impact of these developments. In addition, we overlaid the sensitivity mapping with the location of wind farms present in the country and with the areas of wind potential. Our results showed that the Caatinga region deserves special attention in the current scenario.Among the conflict areas we found that 0.5% of the evaluated areas represent sites with high sensitivity and high wind potential.
This book endeavours to objectively address the power of suggestion and the implantation of false memories in individuals and their effects in criminal proceedings, especially during the criminal interrogation of the accused and the hearing of victims and witnesses of criminal offences. We analyse the main flaws that may arise in the production of testimonial evidence, as it is the most widely used means of proof in Brazilian criminal proceedings. There is a brief analysis of the process of memory formation, as well as the interferences that may arise in this process. In this work, we also mention the consequences that may arise from an unsuccessful enquiry, in the investigative phase and in the procedural phase itself, by the police authority, judges and members of the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the obstacles that may arise during the investigation of the real truth of the facts and, consequently, for the realisation of justice.

The Newpreço is a system that yielded many challenges for its execution, but obtained awards wherever it was presented. We went through Divinópolis-MG where we were champions of the 26 META - Specific Exhibition of Works and Applications of CEFET-MG Campus V. We also made a presentation of the same in Campinas-SP, at Unicamp where we could compete with several other very consistent works. We also made a presentation in Pitangui-MG where the residents were amazed by the proposal of the tool and were willing to use it. Anyway, the system is a success and I hope it can make life much easier for its users.
Case report of a 12-year-old Shih Tzu dog treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Goiás, Jataí Region. The entire treatment was experienced during the residency, in which efforts were not measured to provide dignity and quality of life to the patient. "The creatures that inhabit this earth on which we live, whether human beings or animals, are here to contribute, each in their own peculiar way, to the beauty and prosperity of the world." The different systems of a vehicle allow it to move safely, among these systems one of great importance is the brake system. The braking system promotes the stopping of the vehicle in an efficient and safe way, for this to occur it is necessary to dimension it correctly, in order to avoid the occurrence of failures during its activation. During braking, the kinetic and potential energies of a vehicle are converted into thermal energy through the friction of the disc with the pad. The overheating of the discs can cause problems and lead them to fracture. Thus, this study aims to analyse the structural and heat dissipation capacity of the discs for a 250cc motorbike, ensuring that the brake does not fail during use.
This book deals with the articulation between sustainable development, ecofeminism and focusing on indigenous women. As the scientific field of sustainable development is interdisciplinary, it favors the elaboration of a systemic vision of interaction between different disciplinary contexts to configure a field of visibility of the performance of indigenous women and gender relations. The political and normative levels are the basic instruments for implementing sustainability, but they lose their effectiveness in the absence of research and innovation. The partnership between sustainable development and women's studies / ecofeminism are innovations in social movements and academia.
The teaching process is constantly changing and always seeks new solutions to facilitate the understanding and abstraction of concepts. With the emergence of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), social relations have changed in order to change the way the individual relates to the environment. In this scenario, Facebook is a social network that enables interaction between various social and cultural segments present in society. In Brazil, there are more than 136 million users who use Facebook. Despite its potential, this is a technology that is still little used for educational purposes. This social network presents some resources that can be used, for example, for the Popularisation of Science, especially Astronomy.
The three articles in this collection examine some issues of comparative development and interaction between the Russian Empire and the Iranian state during the late 18th - early 20th centuries. Particular attention is paid to military issues, since both in Iran and Russia the armed forces were at the cutting edge of modernization. The problem of studying the history of the Persian Cossack Brigade from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day is considered separately.
In the pages of this book the reader of philosophy, or the reader interested in the theory of justice as equity, will find an introductory explanation of the concept of the state defended by Rawls and by his theoretical opponent Robert Nozick. A detailed explanation of classical utilitarianism and the oppositions presented by Kant and Rawls to this theory. Also an explanation of Rawlsian contractualism added to the philosopher's critique of intuitionism and his debate with McIntyre's communitarianism, advancing the discussion between these two philosophers in another topic dealing with Justice as a virtue. This is, therefore, a revised and expanded edition that aims to present a deep introduction to the philosophy of John Rawls. More precisely, this book seeks to bring the reader an explanation of the concept of freedom developed by the American philosopher in his theory of justice as equity, entangled by key concepts such as Autonomy of the individual, Rationality and Reasonableness. We bring in these pages a sharp explanation of the Rawlsian principles of justice, among other concepts. We hope that the reader can have a clear access to Rawls' theory.
DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) are processors specifically designed for digital signal processing. The diversity of applications has enabled these devices to evolve considerably since they first appeared in the 1980s. The best-known example is the TMS32010 fixed-point DSP from Texas Instruments, the world market leader in this type of technology. In fact, there are two main families of this type of processor: fixed-point DSPs using integer arithmetic, and floating-point DSPs operating in floating-point arithmetic. The latter are the fastest and most accurate, but also the most expensive. In this book, we present the general characteristics found in most DSPs, the so-called 'conventional' architecture found in first-generation DSPs and in the vast majority of today's processors, the general history tracing the evolution of these different architectures up to the most recent, the place occupied by DSPs relative to other computing structures and, finally, the DSP software development tool.
Respiratory distress is a medical emergency that requires pre-hospital care by the SAMU, and depending on the patient's condition, may lead to hospitalization in intensive care. Among the most frequent causes: acute COPD decompensation, severe acute asthma, pneumothorax, neuromuscular diseases and thoracic trauma. In children, foreign bodies are the most frequent cause of respiratory distress.Diagnosis of respiratory distress is based on clinical findings and gasometric abnormalities (hypoxemia, hypercapnia).Oxygenation using a mask or mask scope is the first line of treatment. All intra- or extra-hospital transport must be assisted by the SAMU.
Since the dawn of mankind, we have always sought to preserve our health. To achieve this, we use the resources of our environment. Indeed, African flora in general, and Beninese flora in particular, contains many plant species that biologists have not yet identified, and whose therapeutic virtues are perhaps still unknown. WHO statistics estimate that over 80% of Benin's population turn to traditional medicine for their primary healthcare needs. The aim of this study is to examine how traditional medicine can be integrated into the official health system in Benin. This overall objective is broken down into five specific objectives: to investigate the foundations of traditional medicine; to study the bases of traditional medicine practice; to examine the framework of collaboration between traditional medicine practitioners and health workers; to identify the diseases treated by traditional practitioners. Finally, to assess the safety aspects of traditional health care offerings, particularly in terms of efficacy, safety and quality.

The Schrems rulings, named after Austrian activist Maximilian Schrems who filed a complaint against hi-tech giant Facebook in 2013, are two measures adopted by the Court of Justice of the European Union in relation to the overseas transfer of European citizens' personal data. The first 2015 ruling determines the invalidation of the Safe Harbor international agreement in force since 2000 between Europe and the United States of America. The second ruling in 2020 has a similar outcome with the invalidation of the new international Privacy Shield agreement signed in 2016.The two Schrems rulings, in addition to their obvious impact on the transfer of personal data overseas, also have political significance and should become an occasion for reflection: the rapid pace of technological evolution and globalization have demonstrated the importance of ensuring the European Union's technological and digital sovereignty; the storage and processing of data within European borders can become a lever for choosing European providers over U.S. operators for whom the necessary requirements would make overseas transfer disadvantageous.
Although Willis-Ekbom syndrome was first described in the 1940s, it is in the last 20 years that it has received increased attention. This is due to the high prevalence in the general population. Other factors have also contributed, such as the important advances in genetic characterisation, the general boost provided by the rise of sleep medicine in the developed world, or the potential morbidity factor that this disease represents for other diseases, such as cardiovascular or metabolic diseases, not to mention the important advances in treatment. As a result, the number of patients diagnosed and treated for RLS has increased significantly in recent years.
Introduction: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis accounts for 11.8% of uveitis cases. The aim of our work is to study the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with sarcoidosis uveitis. Patients and Methods Retrospective study in the ophthalmology department. Results We included 9 patients (8 women and 1 man), 4 patients presented with initial ocular manifestations revealing systemic involvement whereas the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis preceded ocular involvement in 5 patients. The mean age at first consultation was 49 years (29-58). Ophthalmological involvement was bilateral in all patients, 2 patients (22%) had both anterior and intermediate uveitis and 4 patients (44%) had posterior involvement which was classified as panuveitis with retinal vasculitis in 1 case, panuveitis with multifocal choroiditis in 2 cases and panuveitis with retinal vasculitis and multifocal choroiditis in 1 case. Conclusion: Ocular involvement in sarcoidosis is common, and should be investigated in the presence of bilateral granulomatous uveitis.
Pb is an ancient metal that has multiple industrial uses, but when it is manipulated and present in living organisms such as humans, it has serious pathological effects on systems, organs and tissues, the amount in the body will be proportional to the toxic severity. The objective of this work is to update the knowledge on the occupational implications of Pb exposure and its damage to health in different geographical areas. This metal is present in some occupational activities and in the environment in general. The absorption of this mineral depends on the degree of occupational and environmental exposure in men and women. Monitoring by health areas is essential for detection, early prevention and treatment of people affected by the environment, food or occupational handling. Its determination is by means of a venous blood sample, which helps to determine risk levels of exposure to Pb in blood ¿10 µg/dl. At high levels, Pb in the body causes permanent damage to the brain and CNS. This damage can lead to seizures, loss of muscle control and coma.
The aim of this study is to analyse the research that has been carried out in relation to the evaluation of the academic performance of Primary School pupils participating in the Bilingual Programme of the Community of Madrid. From the literature review it is concluded that performance in Language and Mathematics in all the studies analysed is equal or higher in bilingual schools compared to non-bilingual schools, that performance in English is higher in bilingual schools, and that in General Culture (partly coinciding with the area of Science, normally taught in English and assessed in Spanish in bilingual schools) the results are lower in bilingual schools compared to non-bilingual schools in most of the research analysed.
The distal radial approach in interventional cardiology is an innovative and promising technique that uses an artery more superficial than the proximal radial artery primarily in coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty procedures, and perhaps in other types of procedure in the future. This technique offers several advantages over the conventional or femoral approach, including reduced risk of bleeding, vascular complications and pain, and essentially reduced risk of radial artery occlusion, as well as improved patient comfort and quality of life. However, this approach requires a longer learning curve and mastery of specific catheterization techniques, as it can sometimes be limited by anatomical difficulties or individual variations. The distal radial approach is an attractive option in interventional cardiology for eligible patients, which can improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
