"In a Nut's Hell" by Jim Wood is a collection of satirical, humorous, and literary shorter-than-short stories geared for the waning attention span and aimed at providing the laughs we all so desperately need these days. Perfect for the coffee table or bathroom, Wood's serious silliness covers the topics we all must live with, from information overload to identity theft to hypocrisy to cancer to surprise parties to home invasion to religion to dung beetles taking over Washington DC. Wood hopes his book will make you laugh and think, ideally at the same time.
Children with incarcerated loved ones have a lot of questions and concerns about what is happening in their world. "I'm Scared", is devoted to helping answer some of those questions and encourage conversation with their support system. This is a sensative topic to discuss with children. "I'm Scared", teaches children how to cope with the trauma of having a loved one incarcerated as well as what to expect during the entire process of being "taken away" by the police to court proceedings, and visitation. It encourages friendship and strength, courage and faith. "I'm Scared", is a great way to start the conversation when a loved one is involved in the justice system.

We know that romance among students is typical in high schools. Their teachers are not immune to the love bug, either. Ditto the secretaries and janitors and the other adults. It is a wonder any work gets done! Does the overnight crew find love? How about the daytime regulars? Even a guidance counselor? Katie, a young school secretary, is about to learn the answer in this cozy novel centered on Riverview Vocational High School. Two men become quite interested in her. Romance is complicated by medical developments and the reunion of Katie and a special friend. Yes, a dog will play an important role. So will a mysterious caller, a person who has caused trouble at the school before. The dog, Rusty, is a drop-out from the highly competitive profession of Seeing-Eye Dog, but he finds his niche at the high school as an informal Therapy Dog. Subsequently, a new development leads to a new canine calling for this popular pooch. Katie's life takes a dramatic turn as she recovers from her injuries. Helen Bemis has enjoyed working with dogs all her life, and they have often played important parts in her novels. She grew up on a dairy farm in Upper New York State; after graduating high school, she attended Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. She is married and has three children. She obtained a college degree at SUNY Adirondack, earned the Certified Professional Dog Trainer international certification, and has a successful business, K-9 Karing. She has been a Therapy Dog evaluator and is an A. K. C. award evaluator. She has judged fun dog matches, often speaks to many organizations and teaches dog safety and other dog-related topics to schools as well as at her local college. This is her sixteenth Riverview book. She loves to hear people say, "Helen has gone to the dogs."
Discourse. Whatever that has become, there is no disagreement regarding its present state. PES, through short stories, essays, and poetry, attempts to reset the parameters of conversation. Not by dictating new rules, nor by pushing an agenda, much in the way "alternative facts and theories" have brought a "dis" to today's discourse, creating interactions that are little more than "group speak" which will invariably illicit "group response". PES proports to create a lane through the mountain of confefe, bogus theory, and "secondary reality", a lane that offers clarity, if not absolute truth. PES should be in every bathroom in America, a place where the mind can be free from all the distraction and madness we all live with today. Though there will be some who think of PES as the paper that is on the roll, for others, my hope is that PES may open the hearts of some to revisit the understandings they accept as real, and possibly, just maybe, even put some of the madness in the place where it belongs, followed by a good flush.
In the backwater flatlands of a small southern Indiana town on a storied, old nine-hole golf course hard on the banks of the Ohio River a 15-year-old boy enjoys the summer of 1961 playing golf and learning about life. For this young man, the summer starts in June as a contestant in an adult 36-hole tournament in southern Illinois, a tournament that he leads after the first hole. The summer ends in August in Louisville, Kentucky, on the 18th hole of his first match in his first men's match play tournament. It tells of the events that made up his summer and the last summer of the grand old golf course and its culture.

Open this time capsule and discover Key West through the memoirs of two "Military Brats" who landed in paradise quite by chance. These whimsical coming of age stories turn back time to the Key West, Florida they knew while growing up as teenagers in the latter half of the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s. It was after Ernest Hemmingway was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for "The Old Man and the Sea" (1953), but before Jimmy Buffet lost his shaker of salt somewhere on Duval Street (1977). It was during Fidel Castro's 26 de Julio Revolution (1959), The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), President Kennedy's assassination (1963), the Vietnam War (1964), but definitely before Key West was a major tourist destination. Mike & Diane are connected by their shared experience as "Dandelions", the designated flower for military children. Their stories provide a unique perspective and celebrate the resilience of the Dandelion, as well as its ability to thrive and blossom wherever planted. As "Navy Brats", the children of reassigned career Navy parents, they endured many family moves throughout their gypsy-like childhoods before they were suddenly transplanted into a pristine tropical paradise. These short stories recreate the Key West the authors knew, allowing you to experience what it was like to land in the Keys when the ocean was crystal clear, shrimpers and sailors populated Duval Street and something uniquely spectacular happened almost every day. It was in this setting they fell in love with the Keys and were welcomed into the charming and protective Conch community. They lived their adolescent years on Cayo Hueso (Bone Key) that was brimming with colorful characters, delightful fragrances, and long-lasting friendships. They each fell in and out of teenage love, tested the limits of their youthful energy and became hopelessly addicted to the alluring adventures of snorkeling and exploring the outer Keys where pirates once roamed. Their tales flash back into early childhood and forward into adulthood so you can better understand the scope and impact of their Key West experience. Life in the Keys was slow-paced back then, but those who were fortunate enough to visit or call Key West home were placed under an almost magical spell cast by the vast surrounding ocean, azure blue skies and unforgettable sunsets that reached out and pointed the way to endless adventures.
FROM TORTURED TO ALMOST FREE: A PSYCHIATRIC THERAPIST'S LIFE WITH OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER is the story of the author's horrific struggle with severe OCD at a time when little to nothing was known about this macabre, debilitating mental illness. Honest, unwavering, and raw, the author takes the reader along as she struggles to make it through a day, a day in which ordinary things such as cigarette butts, classroom closets, and the starting of an automobile engine create terror. Twenty years later, this same author, now a therapist to others with this horrible disorder, is armed with knowledge and techniques and the realization that how OCD behaves has everything to do with the underlying beliefs one holds of oneself. Changing these beliefs is essential for getting well. Essential reading for those who struggle with OCD and for all who are determined to help them.
Mal was only six when he found that he was not welcome to join his friends in their white school. He was shocked. No school meant that he could not read the books he felt held answers for him. The rustic Shenandoah valley where he grew up had been a quiet paradise with friendly, helpful neighbors and black and white children playing together. Sad and confused, Malachi looked for answers and questioned his grandfather about the meaning in his name. Life had become hostile and he needed to understand why. He found there can be power and magic in a name. Malachi became a leader in his Oakland community. He encouraged others to plant flowers, clean up trash, and teach their children how to be good citizens. As Malachi's story unfolds, we come to know the honest, loving family who had given him his strength, his confidence, energy, good humor, and his thirst for knowledge. Through the years flowers were Malachi's passion. He loved to recreate the gardens of his charmed childhood. On one Saturday, while planting pansies, he looked up to see Julie, a very serious little blonde six year old. They both agreed that the flowers looked like kitten faces. And there began his friendship of many years with her whole family..... the one which gave birth to this book.
This book contains everything that I have wrote down from my freshman year of High school to current. Most of the writings are what i was feeling at the current moment and for the most part whatever just happened to pop into my head at that time. Some of the writings are dark and some of them are light. Most are pain felt writings but also at the same time helpful saying its ok to struggle in life we all do but the most important message is not to give up. If I can reach just one person with that message that its ok to struggle and feel deeply but not give up, then my goal is half met.

The author of the stunning memoir, Moments in Flight [2021], returns with Wolf Woman & Other Poems, a curated collection of 50 poems written over 50 years that span the seasons of a woman''s life. Jo-Ann Vega''s perspective is fresh, provocative, inspirational, and captivating. Each word portrait draws readers into a powerful connection between the author''s thoughts, feelings, and words. The collection''s distinctive organization groups poems by life stage and includes a brief preview of each section. Influenced by Sylvia Plath and the confessional prose-style of expression, Vega writes about the light and the dark sides of life, of being a woman of substance in a world still largely hostile to women''s talents and ambitions. "What was I to do? I wasn''t like the women I knew or worked with, nor was I like my female family members... caregiving was not a natural strength or primary source of identity...No matter which way I turned, if I was to be true to my core being, I had to venture beyond traditional boundaries of gender and culture. It is always going to be a challenging journey for an independent woman with perspective who happens to be gay...I hope my musings provide some nourishment to you on your continuing journey toward wholeness and integrity... Awake to the life-affirming possibilities within waiting to be discovered."Savor the musings of a long time explorer of the depths in search of meaning, identity, understanding and connection.Special features: Wolf Woman & Other Poems is a companion book to Moments in Flight, A Memoir*. Often times it is in that moment of silence when we tend to hear the noise we suppressed. Silent River is a journey in which pain and heartache can be difficult to communicate. Waves of emotions pass through people daily with nowhere for those feelings to flow freely. This is my journey through raging waters and how it became a silent river.
In this grief journal, Valenzuela uses her own candid and vulnerable excerpts from her personal journey of grief. Having suffered the loss of her own child, Valenzuela found healing and truth through the process of writing. Darkness, fears and tragedy are shared with cutting honesty, as Valenzuela takes the reader through the chasm of grief. Valenzuela''s need to connect with her son after death was what took her from a surreal and sorrowful state of suspended animation through a metamorphosis that led into a whole new perspective on loss and life. The reader is tenderly guided and prompted to begin their own personal story of loss. The attached pages allow for the reader to express openly their feelings, memories, thoughts and hopes. The message of healing is provided by Valenzuela throughout the book with the hope that the reader will find acceptance of their loss and the ability to both mourn their loved one and live their own life to the fullest once more.
