As a significant contributor to Modern British art during the interwar years and an associate of the Bloomsbury Group, Carrington, who preferred to be known only by her surname, was described as ‘the most neglected serious painter of her time’ by former Tate Director, Sir John Rothenstein. For the first time in 30 years Ariane Bankes and Anne Chisholm will take Dora Carrington’s works, letters and drawings and shed light on a remarkable artist who defied social norms with her radical bohemian way of life. This book looks at Carrington’s involvement with The Bloomsbury Group, her work for the Omega Workshops, as well as her relationships with artists and writers, including one of the founding members of the Bloomsbury Group, Lytton Strachey. Although devoted to Strachey until her death, their unconventional relationship allowed Carrington to explore her sexuality and defiance of gender norms, which became a defining element of her artwork. Maggi Hambling has over time responded to the sound of song in her work, consistently capturing it in gold against a black ground - to date her diverse subjects have included the singers Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, P J Harvey and Will Young. More recently, and following a night spent in the Sussex wilderness in the company of folk singer Sam Lee listening to the song of the Nightingale, the artist embarked on a new series of paintings, capturing the song of this small migratory songbird. James Cahill’s text places Hambling’s striking new nightingale series in context and considers the long history of the Nightingale which has been celebrated by writers, poets, artists and musicians for thousands of years. A celebration of the life and work of the artist John Craxton, a rebellious figure in British art history

Contemporary British artist Kaye Donachie (b.1970) is best known for her figurative, dream-like portraits of women. Her portraits are not direct representations of her subjects but are "abstract narratives", informed by art and literature by twentieth century women. Often these women have been historically marginalized and include radical writers, activists, poets, and artists. Donachie describes their biographies as "sparse, but that affords a space in which to interpret narratives in my painting and representation." This monograph will bring together a selection of the artist's muted, figurative paintings, exploring the complexities of the muse and female agency in art and literature. It includes an introduction by Simon Martin based on interviews with the artist exploring her engagement with modern art and literature, together with short texts by the artist herself.
