This is the second book in the series about a little dragon called Arrek who lives with the Rodley family. We meet him in a poor state after he's been inside the washing machine. His firepower is restored with help from other dragons and his best friend, Alex. She and Arrek develop a very strong bond but he keeps getting into trouble. He causes mayhem in the house and Alex does her best to find excuses for him. His escapades at home and on holiday in Cornwall cause Alex's tolerant parents annoyance, but they can't help laughing as well. Things become serious though when Arrek comes under threat from the strange-looking Zolganans, during a weekend hotel break; and together with Alex, her new friend Lillie and various dragons, he is put to the test. Once back home, it's not long before he's in trouble again with his mischief. Would anyone want a cake made by a small, naughty dragon?
The story comprises the reminiscences of Arthur, a man in his twilight years as he revisits the neighbourhood where he grew up and his past life as a young signalman on the British railways. It contains a wealth of detail about the British railroads during the steam age, and the transition to diesel and electricity. It is also replete with hilarious descriptions about Arthur's pub-crawling lifestyle with his mates, his grandfather and his lascivious adventures with various busty women, mainly barmaids. It describes a happy go lucky existence with Arthur and his mates, who were mainly concerned with football, drinking at the local pubs, smoking and having naughty, illicit escapades with loose women when not working. It harks back to a simpler time when life was more fun than the pressured rat race of present times.
Cooper Ryland is second mate on the cargo ship, Marjorie Harlington, in Avonmouth loading for Bombay. He is surprised to learn that their ship owner, Sir Felix Harlington, will be sailing with them, bringing with him a party that includes his secretary and a chef, neither of whom are what they seem. Sir Felix also brings valuable goods on board, including a painting with a black and tormented history. Ryland takes charge of two seemingly valuable cases which he puts under lock and key. At the last-minute, their long-standing captain is replaced with the newly-promoted captain, Simon Winsly, a man of great ambition with a murky reputation. It is 1967 and trouble is brewing between Egypt and Israel, threatening their passage through the Suez Canal. A sense of unease is felt by the crew as they get underway. Harlington Ocean Lines is a family-held concern with roots and connections going back to the time of the British Raj. Sir Felix is on a mission to end an ancient family feud, which sets a wealthy Indian family against his own. This provides the backdrop of mystery as dark deeds unfold. Who was Marjorie Harlington, the woman after whom the ship is named? Why does no one in the Harlington family wish to discuss her? Where did she disappear to all those years ago and what has she got to do with the mysterious painting?

Wales AD 383 is the most remote province of Roman-occupied Britain, colonised for over 300 years. Magnus Maximus, known to the Celts as Macsen Wledig, has grown restless with his role as general of the Roman army in Britannia. His nights are broken by dreams of an impossibly beautiful Welsh maiden. He sets his sights on moving his legions out of Britannia to challenge Gratianus - the emperor of the Western Roman Empire. Flavius Arcadius is less than enamoured by his general's plans. The army's withdrawal will leave his family, neighbours and all of Britannia unprotected and at the mercy of internecine conflict between the local tribes and the even greater threat of pagan invaders from the east. He does, however, have a vision for the future - a fortified villa surrounded by a self-sufficient community - if only he could find a way to stay behind when the legions move. Flavius starts to plot... Maximus is sufficiently in thrall to his fantasies to allow Flavius to set out with his two friends and fellow officers, Severus and Caradocus, to seek out, abduct and take this dream girl to him as his bride... The three soldiers wander through the wilds of Cymru, intent only on delaying their return. To their astonishment, they come across a young woman who is the living image of Maximus's dream maiden. Flavius and Severus are determined to bring the girl, Elen, to Maximus. Caradocus, however, engineers their escape. Elen's beauty is matched by her wit and intelligence; and her courage is demonstrated when she saves them both from capture. Before long, the two runaways are in love. But Caradocus and Elen are going to need more than their wits to survive, when they are being hunted - not just by Flavius and Severus, but by Elen's father and, for all they know, the full might of the Roman army...

Following extensive psychiatric treatment, he is finally considered fit to return to duty. However, doubts remain in his mind if he will ever really recover from the past. This is soon put to the test when, after being appointed commanding officer of HMS Simba, a Tribal Class destroyer, he is faced with a life or death decision while on convoy duty in the Mediterranean. The Perils of Isolation contains three separate stories about how people survive the unusual situations in which they find themselves. Connecting the three stories is the author's obvious love of fishing, always in remote, hard to get to areas. 'Mic Muk Mac' is set in the wilds of Ontario, Canada, when a group of school friends go on an annual fishing holiday.'The Naïve Neftyanik' is a story of Canadian oilman, Blake McTavish, whose contract is to set up his company's operations in western Siberia. It's a very different working environment but he goes fishing with some of his new-found, Russian friends. Finally, find out what happens to a group of fishing friends on their trip to a remote area of Labrador, Canada, in 'The Tesla Terrorist' and how they survive the biggest electrical storm ever known.

The various regional cuisines introduce them to gastronomic delights and memorable wines.Tackling the mighty Rhône River with its awesome deep locks in their small boat presents a challenge. Valerie and Geoffrey accept this with their usual humour. Once the Rhône is conquered, they find time to enjoy the ever-changing scenery of the canals as the dream unfolds.
