Even the dead have to work for a living. In the wake of my resurrection as a member of the bloodsucking undead, I chose to put my investigative reporting talents to good use as a PI in Chicago; I've got my work cut out for me. Mingling with society's artsy crowd isn't my favorite pastime, but someone's got to navigate their way through the world of big money and bigger egos to find the killer of a young talent who deserved more than to be laid out on a canvas. My snooping has gotten me in occasional trouble with both sides of the law, so I'm used to cops and mobsters using me for target practice. But my thirst for the red stuff is getting out of control. I'm not sure what scares me more: the price on my head, or the darkness gnawing at my gut. And if that desire isn't bad enough, there's the hot-blooded daughter of a client who has big eyes for yours truly-and a jealous boyfriend.
America's citizens seem plagued by despair and frustration, much deeper today than the "malaise" President Jimmy Carter noted twenty years ago. Our political and social cultures are driven by issues morally complex and yet presented with simple-minded hostility. What's the matter with Kansas? What has happened to the once proud leader of the free world? How secure is our future? Does the republic stand or have we lost it already? Born in 1941, novelist, critic, and teacher Eric Larsen sees his own lifetime as paralleling the arc of a national dissolution, and in three penetrating essays he describes an increasingly desperate situation. A blindness has set in, he argues, producing writers no longer able to write, professors more harmful than helpful, a replacement virtually nation-wide of "thinking" with "feeling" while the population seems unable to grasp even the remotest outlines of such dangerous, radical change. In the tradition of George Orwell, Upton Sinclair, Paul Goodman, and Christopher Lasch, Larsen offers an impassioned critique of where we once were, where we are, and where we're very soon going if we don't watch out.
Pray from Your Gut Satan is alive, well, and actively searching for opportunities to ruin you. Perhaps your trying circumstances or struggling relationships reflect his schemes. Does that make you angry? If you've ever suppressed simmering anger toward the enemy, seeing it as an intrusion into your prayers, it's time you experience the power of violent prayer. These very emotions of hatred and anger against Satan are fuel for life-changing prayer. Overcome an unhealthy, passive approach to prayer that dilutes your communion with the reigning Victor. When you move from defensive, reactive prayers to offensive, proactive prayers with an aggressive agenda, things begin to change. And you don't want to miss out. When the Battle Rages, Wage Prayer You witness evil all around and it bothers you. You fall to your knees and tentatively, hopefully, you approach God and ask Him to step in. But nothing happens. Goodness and righteousness seem to be fighting a losing battle. You wonder, Why is God so passive? Perhaps the better question is this: Why are you so passive when it comes to prayer? Embrace the infuriating, passionate emotion that wells up within you against Satan and his schemes. Turn your righteous anger into proactive, aggressive prayers that invite God to intervene and destroy the evil around you. Engage in violent prayer. "Chris Tiegreen writes with wisdom, knowledge, and creativity. Violent Prayer is a wonderful resource for Christians who want to make prayer a more powerful part of their lives." Carol Pipes Editor, On MissionStory Behind the Book"Especially in praying for my family, I've learned that there is a connection between the emotional content of my prayers and the results I see later. Many such experiences have convinced me that 'violent' prayers can be quite appropriate and effective. My book gets into the nuts and bolts of praying God's agenda without reducing it to formulas, hierarchies, military strategies, or any other clichéd approach to spiritual warfare. It primarily addresses the emotional attitude of the believer and describes how to incorporate God's holy anger into prayer for specific situations. Christians will learn how to pray from their gut-level reactions to the enemy's agenda." -Chris Tiegreen
From Summer of the Big Bachi to Gasa-Gasa Girl, Naomi Hirahara's acclaimed novels have featured one of mystery fiction's most unique heroes: Mas Arai, a curmudgeonly L.A. gardener, Hiroshima survivor, and inveterate gambler. Few things get Mas more excited than gambling, so when he hears about a $500,000 win-from a novelty slot machine!-he's torn between admiration and derision. But the stakes are quickly raised when the winner, a friend of Mas's pal G. I. Hasuike, is found stabbed to death just days later. The last thing Mas wants to do is stick his nose in someone else's business, but at G.I.'s prodding he reluctantly agrees to follow the trail of a battered snakeskin shamisen (a traditional Okinawan musical instrument) left at the scene of the crime...and suddenly finds himself caught up in a dark mystery that reaches from the islands of Okinawa to the streets of L.A.-a world of heartbreaking memories, deception, and murder.
General George S. Patton. His tongue was as sharp as the cavalry saber he once wielded, and his fury as explosive as the shells he'd ordered launched from his tank divisions. Despite his profane, posturing manner, and the sheer enthusiasm for conflict that made both his peers and the public uncomfortable, Patton's very presence commanded respect. Had his superiors given him free rein, the U.S. Army could have claimed victory in Berlin as early as November of 1944.General Erwin Rommel. His battlefield manner was authoritative, his courage proven in the trenches of World War I when he was awarded the Blue Max. He was a front line soldier who led by example from the turrets of his Panzers. Appointed to command Adolf Hitler's personal security detail, Rommel had nothing for contempt for the atrocities perpetrated by the Reich. His role in the Führer's assassination attempt led to his downfall.Except for a brief confrontation in North Africa, these two legendary titans never met in combat. Patton and Rommel is the first single-volume study to deal with the parallel lives of two generals who earned not only the loyalty and admiration of their own men, but the respect of their enemies, and the enmity of the leaders they swore to obey. From the origins of their military prowess, forged on the battlefields of World War I, to their rise through the ranks, to their inevitable clashes with political authority, military historian Dennis Showalter presents a riveting portrait of two men whose battle strategies changed the face of warfare and continue to be studied in military academies around the globe.
