Sei personaggi fu rappresentato per la prima volta a Roma, al Teatro Valle, il 9 maggio 1921 e venne percepito come una provocazione. Il trionfo accadde a Milano pochi mesi dopo e fu all¿origine della fama mondiale di Pirandello. Si tratta di un¿opera tradotta, adattata, disseminata e trasformata, capace di entrare in tanti sistemi linguistici e culturali diversi. This book provides a comparative study of the accounts of the relationship between essence and existence, which are provided by Sadra and Hegel respectively. Sadra is presented as having a project that is similar in scope to Hegel's own. The author argues that while Sadra shares with Hegel the latter's rejection of essence as the positive quality of a determinate being, Sadra's characterization of essence as the negative quality of a determinate (existent) is seen as too one-sided from Hegel's perspective. This book would be primarily useful for Hegel scholars, scholars of Islamic philosophy, and those who are engaged in comparative philosophy.
Diese soziolinguistische Arbeit erforscht anhand von vorwiegend süddeutschen Patientenbriefen des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts aus dem Corpus of Patient Documents, wie externe Einflussfaktoren und die Fähigkeit zu strategischer Variation auf der sprachlichen Ebene der Lexik zusammenwirken. Die aus sechs Studien bestehende Untersuchung basiert auf rund 700 Egodokumenten von 80 Schreibern aus unterschiedlichen sozialen Gruppen. Dabei wird der Einfluss von Geschlecht, Alter, im Berufsleben erworbener Schreibroutine und psychischer Erkrankung sowie die Wirkung vielerlei Kommunikationssituationen und Textsorten auf Lexik wie Fremdwörter, Emotionswortschatz oder Personennamen analysiert. Der Einbezug von Textsorten unterschiedlicher Formalität und einer bisher kaum beachteten Schreibergruppe trägt so zum Ausbau einer Sprachgeschichte "von unten" bei.

The Second World War undoubtedly cast a long shadow, framing the way in which matches were previewed and reported. The contrasting fortunes of the British and West German economies and British anxieties regarding German unification also impacted on sports coverage. An intense Anglo-German international football rivalry was forged against this backdrop. Newspaper readers often turn to the back page first and first impressions are important. Press coverage helped to shape what the English thought of the Germans and what they thought of themselves. Crossing the Line? - which includes an important chapter on the German media - focuses largely on the part played by English newspapers in generating a simplistic sporting commentary heavily dependent on stereotypes before it overreached itself in the mid-1990s and the German popular press began to hit back. As English football pundits often remind their viewers: «You can never underestimate the Germans».

Poldowski (Irène Dean Paul née Wieniawska) 1879-1932 was the youngest daughter of the celebrated violinist/composer, Henryk Wieniawski. The only member of her family to follow her father into the music profession, she developed from a child prodigy into one of the most important and successful female composers in the United Kingdom. Like so many of her sister composers, her legacy has suffered the fate of neglect until a recent revival in interest. Poldowski's most successful composition genre is the solo art song, comprising mostly settings of texts by the French poet, Paul Verlaine. She displays an innate ability to realize the text within her own distinctive style with echoes of influence of her French counterparts, namely Fauré and Debussy. This book includes the most complete biography to date of this highly individual, colourful (and sometimes controversial) musician. A study of her relationship with the poetry of Verlaine precedes a discussion of each of the published songs, concentrating mainly on a description of the structure, the role of the piano and most importantly, a commentary on the musico-poetic relationship with details of reception/reaction where known. It offers new perspectives on major writers like Bulgakov and Zamiatin as well as lesser known counterparts.
This book focuses on the most successful feature films of John Carney, namely Once (2006), Begin Again (2013) and Sing Street (2016). Drawing on narrative, formalist and genre theories of film, the book presents an in-depth examination of how the formal and stylistic choices made by Carney allow each film to narrate a story in a coherent way. It shows how aural and visual contrivances are hidden behind a façade of realism, and how the films engage with universal, national and personal concerns and also how they relate to each other and to Irish and American film in general. It also explores the textual articulation of genre in each and the discrepancies between such articulation, the genre expectations set up by the promotional discourse coming from the publicity materials and events accompanying each release, and the genre labelling of each film in contemporary reviews by professional critics from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland.

Pedro de Valencia, cronista real de Felipe III, escribió una crítica sobre el pergamino y libros plúmbeos de Granada a instancias del Inquisidor General, Bernardo de Sandoval y Rojas. El papa Paulo V llevaba tiempo solicitando más información sobre estos textos polémicos que se presentaban como un suplemento recién descubierto a los Hechos de los Apóstoles. El pergamino de 1588 pretendía ser una profecía escatológica de San Juan Evangelista mientras que los libros plúmbeos (1595-1599), eran aparentemente textos de la época de los apóstoles inscritos sobre discos de plomo. El libro más importante, el Libro de la verdad del Evangelio, había sido escrito por la Virgen María ella misma. Valencia consideraba que los textos eran una burda superchería. ¿Quién o quiénes los escribió? ¿Por qué se escribieron en árabe textos que pretendían ser de la era apostólica? ¿Y para qué finalidad? Esta edición de la crítica de Valencia la contextualiza históricamente: las tensiones entre el gobierno y los ¿nuevos convertidos de moros¿, que culminó en la expulsión masiva de 1609. Antonio Benítez Rojo es uno de los escritores más reconocidos del exilio cubano. Este estudio busca llenar un vacío crítico entorno a su obra con un análisis que incluye su famosa trilogía El mar de las lentejas (1978), La Isla que se repite (1990), Paso de los vientos (1998) y su última novela histórica Mujer en traje de batalla (2001). Se centra en el desarrollo de Benítez Rojo como escritor y pensador de América Latina relacionando su labor intelectual con la realidad socio política que ha vivido. El estudio va acompañado por dos entrevistas inéditas realizadas en dos momentos distintos de la investigación. Su inserción en apéndice constituye un momento de revelación de un escritor que ha alcanzado la independencia y la libertad que muchos en las mismas circunstancias no han podido lograr y que le ha permitido levantar la mirada hacia un entorno socio-cultural caribeño.
En su «Carta a un amigo japonés», Derrida afirma que «la cuestión de la deconstrucción es también, de cabo a cabo, la cuestión de la traducción». El presente libro examina la compleja relación entre traducción y deconstrucción desde una doble perspectiva conceptual y retórica. Por una parte, la autora hace un estudio de la traducción como nudo de reflexión en la obra de Derrida, mostrando su conexión con nociones como différance, suplemento, don, etc. Por otra, realiza un análisis centrado en la traducción como principio retórico subyacente en muchas de las estrategias discursivas que caracterizan la escritura derridiana. La traducción, en esta doble vertiente temática y estratégica, constituye un lugar de paso obligado para acceder al pensamiento derridiano. Al proponer un nuevo modo de entender y valorar la diferencia, la deconstrucción abre el camino para repensar la exigencia de fidelidad impuesta desde antiguo a la traducción. En el contexto del creciente interés que las aportaciones de la deconstrucción despiertan entre los teóricos de la traducción, este libro pretende contribuir a ese diálogo y fomentarlo.

De nature interdisciplinaire et internationale dans son approche, cet ouvrage regroupe des travaux variés qui portent aussi bien sur des personnalités marquantes du monde artistique (Maeterlinck, Verhaeren ou Ensor) que sur des études plus larges sur l¿Art Nouveau en Belgique, sur les liens entre littérature et colonialisme, ou sur les collaborations entre écrivains et artistes. Les liens entre Belgique et France à l¿époque étaient tellement intriqués que c¿est essentiellement par la France que leur influence s¿est diffusée à travers l¿Europe.
