The two issues of Phase 7 in this collection act as a companion volume to Alec Longstreth's graphic novel Basewood. Issue #020 includes all of the lyrics from Songs From the Basewood, a rock opera reinterpretation of Basewood by Andy Hentz and Alec Longstreth, as well as "The Making of Basewood." Issue #021 tells the story of the "Basewood Beard" that Alec grew during the last three and a half years of Basewood's creation.
This paperback second edition of Basewood reincorporates the covers, introductions, letters columns and thank you pages from its initial serialization in Alec Longstreth's long-running minicomic, Phase 7. There are also 16 new pages of Basewood "fan art" drawings by various cartoonists. Basewood tells the story of a young man who wakes up in a mysterious forest with no memory of how he got there. As he discovers more about his forgotten past, he meets an old hermit who lives in a treehouse with his loyal dog, a young woman who fights for what she believes in and a giant wolf-dragon. Basewood is a fantastical story of adventure, love, loss, friendship and growth.
In 2007 Alec Longstreth painted one animal for each letter of the alphabet. This book collects all twenty-six of these colorful paintings, along with a page showcasing each letter (in uppercase and lowercase) as well as the name of the animal.
From 2008-2015 Alec Longstreth painted 100 watercolors using the "100 Themes" challenge. This book reprints all 100 paintings and includes a preface about the 100 Themes, and an appendix with information about the tools and process used to create these paintings.
Alec Longstreth documents his lifelong obsession with his favorite band, weezer. Follow Alec as he listens to The Blue Album on the radio, joins the fan club, sees them live on the Pinkerton tour, meets the band and eventually gets to work for them drawing tour posters! On December 19th, 2001 Alec Longstreth drew his first 24-Hour Comic. The experience was so amazing for him, that Alec vowed to draw one a year for the rest of his life. "24x7" collects six of Alec's best 24-Hour Comics from his first ten years on the job. The seventh 24-Hour Comic is the book itself!
This collection reprints five issues of Alec Longstreth's minicomic Phase 7 in their entirety: #012 is a stick figure science fiction story about a college and the barcode system it uses to keep track of its students. #013 reprints a comics essay in which the idea of everyday art is explored throughout art history. #014 is a facsimile of the sketchbook that Longstreth took on his first trip to Europe, for the 2009 Angoulême comics festival in France. It includes an account of his trip and many observational drawings created while traveling. #015 and #016 are comprised of selections from Longstreth's many sketchbooks, starting in 1995 and working up to 2008. Various quick drawings and loose diary comics reveal the cartoonist's struggles with relationships, employment, education and his future. All of these issues were released while Longstreth was focused on drawing his graphic novel Basewood, hence the title "B-Sides."
