"Chester County, Pennsylvania, is arguably one of the more historic and naturally beautiful places in the United States. This popular photographic treatment of the region has been updated with all new images of scenes such as the Devon Horse Show, the Kennett Square Mushroom Festival, and the Quaker settlement of Nantmeal. While much has changed since colonial days, when its abundant natural resources helped support a nation-to-be, visible reminders of past activities remain intermingled with elements of 21st-century progress and growth. Some of the reminders are simply names, ghosts of times past when travel was slow, crossroads mattered, and distances between activities necessarily were shorter than today. Others, such as buildings, farms, and ruins, are more visible. The 135 color photographs form a memorable journey through the countryside, artfully capturing bits and pieces of its history and giving glimpses of its present-day character."--

This collection of over 140 curated posters by the revolutionary graphic artist Seymour Chwast provides context and insight into not only his five-decade career, but the poster genre itself. Since founding Push Pin Studios alongside Milton Glaser and Edward Sorel in the 1950s, Chwast's posters have been widely celebrated for their combination of subversive style and strong political satire. His caustic humor, graphic hand, and visual commentary cleverly synthesize in a way that is both wry and immediately understandable. Posters are arranged by type--Causes, Commerce, Information, Exhibits, and Lectures--rather than chronology, which, along with the large format, invites readers to engage thematically with the designs. Commentary on each poster makes this a valuable resource for students, educators, historians, and all who appreciate the unique ability of posters to subvert notions of popular culture, politics, and design at once. Essays by Shepard Fairey and Steven Heller contextualize Chwast's impact on 20th-century design.

Every day in Lancaster County, thousands of Plain-sect farm families hitch up draft horses to work their fields, and carriage horses to take them from place to place. These animals are foundational to a faith community that bans automobiles and tractors in a desire to live simple, agrarian-based lives. Stories and interviews accompany over 240 candid photos depicting the most common horses at work and play in Lancaster County--from foals frolicking at their mother's side to six Belgians hitched abreast to harrow a field. The book features six draft horse breeds and five carriage horse breeds--Belgian, Percheron, Mule, Suffolk, Spotted Draft, Haflinger, Standardbred, Morgan, American Saddlebred, Dutch Harness, and Friesian. The photos and stories show how they are trained and cared for, offering profound insight into the emotional connection that Plain people have with their horses.
The 254 landscape photos in this book, along with the accompanying facts about them, illustrate all of the counties of Texas. Each county includes a map of its location and iconic photography of that county's notable landscape and natural setting. The photographer, Lance Varnell, has the heart of an environmentalist and had the eye of a photographer. The word "had" is used here because following the 15-year adventure of collecting these photographs, Lance contracted a rare disease that left him blind. His father, Ronn Varnell, led his son into a love of photography and was so impressed with the collection that he encouraged Lance to put together this book. 254 illustrates Lance's love for nature and a rare talent to capture the varied landscape of Texas. -- Amazon

"From New England to the Deep South, photographers Susan Daley and Steve Gross have captured more than 100 forgotten buildings along America's old auto routes. Isolated in full-color and black-and-white portraits, the roadside cafâes, feed stores, grange halls, juke joints, and general stores are a poignant reminder of the ingenuity of local building practices and working-class culture during the years between the Civil War and the Great Depression. With their humble beauty and distinctive character, these once-useful structures infuse the American landscape with a strong sense of place. This collection of buildings preserves a sampling of our country's architecture heritage and encourages travelers to slow down and notice the details." -- Publisher's website.
With their softened camouflage, sun-faded stencils, and well-worn insignia patches, this collection of more than 100 iconic WWII American military jackets will wow even the most hardcore connoisseurs and collectors. The cult-status jackets come from the collections of the authors, who are natives of Rome. This "eternal city," universally defined as one of the largest "open-air sets" in the world, provides evocative backdrops for some of the pieces. In glamour poses shot off the usual tourist routes, 30 models-for-a-day put a distinctive spin on the jackets, mixing and matching them with rugged outfits. Part of the appeal of vintage military jackets is that each piece tells the story of the life it lived. This manifesto of post-WWII style encourages us to see its charms with new eyes.

"The M1 carbine is a .30-caliber, semiautomatic rifle that first appeared in 1942 as a standard firearm for the US military during World War II. It was later used by US forces in the Korean and Vietnam Wars and continues to see worldwide use to this day. Produced in several variants by many manufacturers, it was and is still widely used not only by military forces, but by paramilitary and police units worldwide. Its design, construction, and variants - including the M1A1, M2, and M3 - are shown in superb period photography and clear, up-close colour images. Accessories such as magazines, ammunition, belts, pouches, and cleaning kits are featured throughout the book, as well as rarely seen World War II-related uniform and equipment items"--Publisher's description.
Chronicles the design, development, and wartime use of this famous American attack bomber.
The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a new-build design by Lockheed and proved adaptable to many roles, from carrying outsized cargo to dropping paratroops. The C-141 was used in difficult environmental conditions, such as the heat and extreme humidity of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and the frozen ice pack of Antarctica. Modification programs enabled the C-141 to make full use of its capabilities, by adding in-flight refueling plus extending the length of the fuselage. The plane was a valued and appreciated USAF asset in numerous missions, from disaster aid and humanitarian relief to doing their part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and in the war on terror. The aircraft were eventually retired en masse in 2006 simply as a result of wear and tear. This book covers in detail all aspects such as interior/exterior configurations, cargo capabilities, missions, and modifications made throughout its service life.
