Volume 3 of a monumental three-part illustrated history of ERMA, the Erfurter Maschinenfabrik. ERMA is best known for production of German small arms during the Second World War, including the MP 40 submachine gun, the Mauser K98 rifle, and the ERMA EMP. Volume 3 provides detailed profiles of all ERMA's flare and submachine gun models. These include the interwar EMP, which ERMA had foreign customers for in Europe and the Americas. A significant number of EMPs were also sold to the SS in the buildup to WWII. During the war, production shifted away from the EMP to the MP38 and MP40, of which ERMA produced hundreds of thousands of examples for the Wehrmacht. Before, during, and after the war, the "Werke" designed a significant variety of prototype or very small production submachine guns, all of which are described in unprecedented detail in this book. Aside from the submachine guns, this volume includes descriptions of flare guns and some miscellaneous accessories and summarizes ERMA's substantial wartime production of the Sturmgewehr assault rifle. This final volume also includes a treasure trove of notes and appendixes. Collectively, the three-volume work totals nearly 1,400 pages with more than 2,200 photos. This is the definitive guide to ERMA and a crucial reference for any collector of German firearms.
Collecting Laurel & Hardy combines more than 1,000 full-color photos of artifacts with film history, fun stories, and painstaking research to create a veritable encyclopedia of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia--from Stan's perpetual desk calendar and Ollie's Way Out West pants, to rare lobby cards and original scripts, to figurines and games. Featuring even truly obscure items (such as Christmas ornaments depicting Laurel and Hardy dressed as baby chickens!), this book takes fans into the whimsical, wonderful, and often hilarious world of collectibles that celebrate the popular comedic duo. Showcasing items from the priceless to the more affordable, chapters tackle the categories of autographs; props, wardrobe, and personal items; advertising and publicity; toys and games; figures; ceramics; books and comics; and so much more! There's even a chapter that discusses the international Sons of the Desert fan club, as well as museums around the world devoted to "the Boys." Special featurettes add to the fun by providing information on the iconic duo's experiences with fan correspondence, awards, magic, animation, lost films, and even their work with animals. Filled to the (bowler hat) brim with rare and desirable memorabilia, this book offers a tour through the world's largest assembly of Laurel and Hardy collectibles in one place, making it a veritable museum in print and the ultimate tribute to one of Hollywood's most beloved comedy teams.

This is the definitive, fully illustrated account of the Beatles' concerts and controversies, and of how the United States dominated their lives in so many ways. Written by one of the acknowledged experts on the Fab Four, Liverpool's own Spencer Leigh, this volume includes interviews with fellow musicians, promoters, and audience members, together with rare photographs and memorabilia. Early in 1964, with Beatlemania raging in the UK, the Beatles topped the US charts with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and became a sensation on American TV with The Ed Sullivan Show--on which they appeared no fewer than three occasions, on consecutive Sundays in February 1964. In April 1964, they held all Top Five positions on the Billboard Hot 100 and were playing such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and Shea Stadium. As Epstein predicted, they had become bigger than Elvis--after their first appearances of 1964 (at Carnegie Hall and in Washington, DC), the band went on to do a full North American tour in 1964, a shorter tour in 1965, and a final, 13-date tour in 1966 (each of which is covered in detail), transforming them into global superstars--but when John Lennon commented that the band was "bigger than Jesus," things turned sour, and there were public burnings of their records. The final chapter and epilogue of the book take the story of "the Beatles in America" up to the band's breakup and beyond, including John and Yoko's June 1, 1969, "Bed-In" in Montreal and the release of the couple's single "Give Peace a Chance."
With his iconic art and the groundbreaking content of his Bizarre magazine, John Willie is perhaps the person most responsible for introducing fetish style to the mainstream. Illustrated with examples of John's work, this in-depth exploration shines the spotlight on the man behind the drawings of buxom beauties and the photographs of expertly executed erotic bondage, delving into - his early life from his 1902 birth in England as John Coutts through his education, military service, immigration to Australia, and employment as a seaman and laborer; - the chance encounter with a network of high-heel fetishists that incited John's discovery of his community and his calling in the world of erotic art; - his relationship with model, wife, and muse Holly Faram; - his move to the United States and his place in the mid-20th-century fetish scene populated by artists, publishers, editors, and models such as Charles Guyette, Robert Harrison, Edythe Farrell, Irving and Paula Klaw, Bettie Page, and Eric Stanton; - the debut of his groundbreaking Bizarre magazine in 1946, through which he created a space for like-minded people to share and celebrate fantasies--from high heels and cross-dressing to blindfolds and bondage--that the mainstream world found "bizarre"; - his career-long struggles against the forces of governmental oversight; - and how the murders by so-called "Glamour Girl Killer" Harvey Glatman--who posed as a bondage photographer to lure his victims--helped spur John's eventual disillusionment with the world of fetish art he helped build. Ahead of his time, John's influences can still be seen in the worlds of art and fashion, and he was an advocate for freedom of expression in dress, gender identity, and sexuality--issues that are still hotly debated today. Drawing heavily from John's extensive interactions with researchers at the Kinsey Institute, Garrett provides a close-up portrait of the artist whose ideas have fed the erotic fantasies of generations of people.
While headlines are focusing on mass timber for commercial "plyscrapers," here are creative, stylish solutions for smaller residential projects that retain the material's carbon-capturing and strength benefits. By focusing on a few hand-picked examples of single- and multifamily projects through an architectural and cultural lens, the author adds a vital dimension to the story of timber that's stronger than steel--a story that's still in the early stages of being written by architects and builders but will soon be the leading edge of design and construction. Each of the 11 global projects is accompanied by detailed stories capturing the genesis and challenges of the project, as well as floor plans and full-color architectural photographs. Several of the projects included here were designed by courageous architects who built their own houses first using mass timber--ideal advisers for clients looking to navigate using prefabricated engineered wood products. The projects included here faced the formidable variables for mass timber--from sourcing to shipping to transportation to renting the crane, to coordinating the delivery, to finding a skilled contractor who can physically assemble the panels. However, the reward is also clear in this timely look at a green material everyone will be seeing more of in the coming years.

During the early years of US involvement in Vietnam, the CIA helped arm militia groups in South Vietnam referred to as the "Fighting Fathers." The name was a reference to the Catholic priests who organized the fighting groups. The fathers fought alongside their parishioners to defend their localities from the Communist insurgency, the Vietcong. Author Alessandro Giorgi has studied the subject in unprecedented detail, conducting original research in recently declassified archives and interviewing former US intelligence personnel and Italian missionary witnesses. Giorgi's first English language book Vikings in Vietnam (2024) received praise from noted historians from various elite universities in the US and also an endorsement from Pulitzer prize winning author Thomas Powers.

The Hammondsport, New York, native's first experience with speed and engineering was with bicycles and, very shortly afterward, with motorcycles. From 1902 to 1912, Curtiss and his team built, sold, and raced engines and complete motorbikes out of their shop in Hammondsport. In 1907, Glenn himself set a world land speed record of 136 mph on board his extreme V8-powered bike. He was labeled the fastest man on Earth until 1911 and the fastest man on a motorcycle until 1930! Included are more than 100 photos, most of which are rarely seen vintage photos from the archives of the Curtiss Museum. Explore the early years, engineering beginnings, and motorcycles of Glenn H. Curtiss--a true engineering genius.
