Psyche of the Injured Athlete: the Unspoken Truths presents an intimate look at what happens to athletes who suffer a debilitating, sport career-ending injury. The athlete's identity, the sports family, the daily discipline and work to become an elite athlete are all gone. The psyche of the athlete is damaged, and there is little in place to help them find healing and wholeness. The author, Dr. Laura Miele, PhD, describes her own journey as an elite basketball player who suffered a back injury that ended her promising career and left her on the sidelines. She shares the utter devastation, the consultations with numerous medical professionals searching for a way to rehabilitate and continue to play, and the realization that she needed to move on from her dream. She is an expert in fitness, sports and recreation with a PhD in Sports Psychology, and she brings her understanding of athletic identity, sports injury rehabilitation, and career-ending injury to bear on the lack of mental health resources available to injured athletes and to those who care for them. This book is intended to help coaches, parents, medical practitioners, and the injured athletes themselves acknowledge the need for the body, mind and spirit all to be considered when evaluating the health and wellbeing of the injured athlete. The seven comprehensive chapters cover Miele's story, the role of sport in the identity of elite athletes, the loneliness and despair of an injured, depressed athlete, and finally her detailed solutions to help the injured athlete cope with and move beyond their injury, to transition out of sports and into a successful career and life. The insights from coaches and athletes sprinkled throughout the book corroborate and expand on the topics of athletics, injury, loss and recovery. Dr. Miele notes that athletes have everything they need to heal and move on if they are given the appropriate support. They are disciplined, they know how to work hard, and they are team players. With the right mental health resources and guidance, they can integrate their love of their sport into their life and come back strong.Whether you are a parent, coach, doctor or athlete, this book is a must read. Better analysis and treatment are critical to the mental health of elite athletes, and you owe it to yourself or the athlete you care for to better understand the psyche of the injured athlete.
As visitors to Washington, D.C., celebrated the glorious spring of the 1972 Cherry Blossom Festival, tensions inside the U. S. Capitol were rising. Across the globe, in the jungles of Vietnam, an unwinnable war was wearing on. The president, despite promises to phase out the war and bring troops home, was ramping up the air warfare. Senators and House members, as well as the citizens they represented-mothers and fathers, students and teachers, clergy, and activists-had grown weary of boys coming home in body bags and ceremonies around coffins draped in American flags.Meanwhile, in the south wing of the Capitol, a battle between the war hawks and the peace doves in the U.S. House of Representatives mounted. The hawks had the upper hand, siding with the president and clinging to the tradition that matters of war were handled in the White House, not the Congress. But that spring, Tip O''Neill, then the House Democratic majority whip, saw an opportunity in the unrest. Even the leading hawks were tired of this war and the president''s empty promises, and O''Neill knew it was time to act to end the war. This is the story of one man''s attempt to accomplish a milestone in the history of the American legislative process. Because of his initiative and leadership, the People''s House was given the unique opportunity to have its voice heard on the matter. Tip O''Neill asked and answered the question that still echoes decades later: If Congress has the constitutional power to declare war, can''t it also declare to end war?

“Hi, I’m Breezy, and this is my wife, Dodo.” With hand extended, that was how I usually introduced us to new acquaintances. They would react with a smile, a look of disbelief, and a series of questions – “How and when did you get those names?” – “How did you two meet and marry?” – etc. Our response was quite simple. We were born a week apart in December 1928 to couples who were friends in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. I was given my nickname by a nun in elementary school, at about the same time that Dodo was given hers by her brother Ted. We grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. My dad working in the coal mines and Dodo’s dad owning a local tavern. We first met and became friends in 9th grade, and our friendship grew during our high school years. We began dating while I was attending the University of Scranton, and, a few years later, in October 1950, at the age of 21, were married in the same church in which we had been baptized. I served in the military from 1952 to 1954, which led to my career working at the Department of the Army. We settled in southeastern Pennsylvania, where we lived, worked, and raised their family. This response would lead to more questions. Over the years, our three daughters, Donna, Diane, and Janet, asked similar and many more questions. We answered them with the full extent of our recollections. Yet, it seemed that there was always another question. Now, in my golden years, my daughters have persuaded me to tell them, and their children, the full story of “Breezy” and “Dodo,” including the histories of our families, their immigration from Poland to Pennsylvania, my paternal grandmother’s 21 children, and maternal grandmother’s 13 children. Life growing up and living in a small coal mining town during the 1930s and 40s. getting married and working to achieve the American dream of middle class.
