This book addresses the Arctic and the northern regions by exploring cold waters and northern seascapes. It focuses on cultural discourses and artistic representations concerning the human experience and imagination of how the Arctic Ocean has been explored and used. It aims to assess what is specific to the northern waters vis-a-vis other sea and water areas in the world. The contextual background is provided by the fundamental shift from terra-based thinking towards aqua-based thinking, including the histories of the northern waters and the innovative ocean studies of the last decades.This book will be of interest to readers in Arctic studies and Sea and Ocean studies (including those with interests in literature, history, cultural and film studies, anthropology and politics), Environmental History and Cultural studies as well as in Russian studies. Classical liberalism has typically sought to maintain as much room as possible for the exercise of personal initiative in the face of the encroachment of states. This book explores these questions of coercion and authority in the context of the size and scope of the state and argues that the state and its agents should be held to the same moral rules as are the individuals it rules over. The book considers how a distinct feature of the state is its police or coercive power, about which one may ask how the state acquires it and what if anything would justify its use. It considers the implication that there is nothing inherent about state agents that entitles one to behave in ways that we would not accept from a private actor, and how once that argument is made, the state's claim to authority is weakened. The author also discusses the extent to which democracy has been thought to provide any sort of justification for coercion or authority.  This book will be of interest to academics and students of political philosophy, especially classical liberalism, and legal philosophy.  

This book presents the results of experimental and theoretical studies of the destruction of solids under impact, explosion, high pressures, and strain rates. The content identifies the basic laws of the destruction of bodies under dynamic loads. The results of numerical studies were obtained using numerical methods on the Lagrangian, Euler, and ALE approaches to the description of the motion of continuous media. Numerical methods and mathematical models have been tested by comparison with experimental data and well-known analytical solutions (for instance, Rankin-Hugoniot laws). Experimental studies were performed on unique ballistic installations with the registration of fast processes (high-speed shooting). The results are used as new tests to verify the developing modeling methods. The research objects were metal multilayer plates, functionally graded materials, advanced, smart, and natural materials, etc. The book is interesting to specialists in the field of mathematical modeling and experimental methods for studying fast processes under dynamic loading.

This book focuses on first-generation graduate students in the US and the graduate or post-baccalaureate programs that house and educate these students. The several voices in this book, including first-generation graduate students, address the phenomena of graduate students' experiences and related university practices, with the practices connected to traditional academic and Western values and to academic and neoliberal institutional logics. This book addresses the growing need for a standard textbook on input-output analysis (IO) within the context of industrial ecology (IE). IE is a discipline dedicated to providing system-wide, quantitative, and science-based solutions for sustainable development challenges, and its global importance has been rapidly increasing. The primary analytical tools of IE are life-cycle assessment (LCA) and material flow analysis (MFA). IO has been widely utilized for LCA since the late 1990s and is increasingly being applied to MFA as well. This trend is being driven by the greater availability and application of global IO data, which now includes an ever-expanding number of countries and regions. Despite the presence of excellent textbooks on IO and IE individually, there is a lack of resources that integrate these two fields. This book seeks to fill that gap by focusing on the practical application of IO to IE, specifically in the context of LCA and MFA. By combining these methodologies, readers can gain valuable insights into sustainable development issues and contribute to more effective solutions in the field of IE.

This book has the merit of being the first book analysing different aspects of data taxation from a wide perspective encompassing not only tax law but also other significant issues related to data, such as data protection and economic inefficiencies. The main aim is to provide data-specific solutions to data-driven problems. In the midst of a number of critical issues and a great deal of uncertainty currently reigning in the field, the authors attempt to put forward easy-to-implement and efficient proposals on the basis of an interdisciplinary analysis. The core idea of this book consists of segregating the utilisation of data into four different yet interdependent steps and constructing the tax law analysis on top of these four corner stones. Step one, occurring in the generation and collection phases of the datäs life cycle, comprises ¿the digital barter¿ and other collection of data. Step two, taking place during the processing and analytics phasesof the datäs life cycle, consists of microwork. Step three, situated in the storage, processing, analytics and use phases of the datäs life cycle, encompasses aggregation and internal use of data. Step four, materialising during the distribution and use phases of the datäs life cycle, covers sale of data, transfer of data and granting the right to use a database. The main issues occurring in each of the four steps are analysed separately, and yet interdependently, with an emphasis on international tax law. The book also comprises a VAT analysis; suggestion of a new type of tax, namely «data collection tax»; and a brief opinion on a potential future «robo-data tax». The subjects explored in this book are of interest for researchers, lawyers as well as tax administrations. Digital Education is recognised as a key transformative innovation for K-12 school and university teaching and learning, as well as, for professional development and vocational training. As a result, blended and online courses are nowadays widely deployed to meet the needs of K-12, higher education and vocational training students, as well as, the needs for professional development of in-service professionals. In this context, important professional roles in digital education and training, such as, the Instructional Designers, who design and develop online and blended courses, and the Trainers or Tutors who support the delivery of these online and blended courses, require new professional competences compared to those assumed at the traditional face to face education and tra ining programs.This is particularly relevant today, in the post Covid-19 era, where educational organisations, leaders and teachers are challenged with reinventing their teaching and learning environments to offer higher quality, more accessible and inclusive teaching, learning and assessment. Educational Data Literacy (EDL) is a core competence for all education professionals, including school teachers, instructional designers and tutors of online and blended learning courses, as well as educational institutions' leaders. Nevertheless, existing professional competence frameworks for educators pay little attention to EDL, missing out the potential of using emerging EDL methods and tools in online and blended teaching and learning - thus there is a need for extending existing professional competence frameworks for educators with new competences to accommodate the emerging field of EDL. To this end, this brief monograph presents a comprehensive proposal of an Educational Data Literacy Competence Profile (EDL-CP) framework for education professionals, as well as, exemplary learning outcomes for the proposed EDL-CP framework, and use-case examples for indicative target groups, namely instructional designers, e-Trainers and K-12 school teachers. This book considers the responses of states to migrant girls who are separated from family and enter state care systems as unaccompanied or trafficked young people. The book draws on research with girls and social work practitioners in the UK to explore what can happen when separated girls encounter professionals at borders and within care systems. It considers how separated girls adapt to different ideas of what it means to be a girl in destination countries, and how this is affected by their other intersecting identities. The book identifies how girls can feel welcomed, but also how young migrants can be seen in excluding ways. It argues that narratives of the fragile 'refugee child' are unhelpful ways to understand individual girls. Using theories and clear language relevant to both academics and practitioners, the author fills a gap in the research on migrant and trafficked young women who frequently represent the minority in care systems globally.
