This book delves into optics and photonic materials, describing the development of an intelligent all-optical system capable of replicating the functional building blocks of the biological brain. Starting with an analysis of biological neuronal dynamics and traversing the state of the art of neuromorphic systems developed to date, the book arrives at a description of neural networks realized through spatial soliton technology.After a brief introduction to the biology of neural networks (Chapter 1), the book delves into the description of the neuromorphic problem emphasizing the peculiarities of optical hardware developed to date. (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 is dedicated to the description of psychomemories , which represent the modeling of human learning according to the theories of modern neuro-psychology. This chapter provides the prerequisites for understanding how solitonic neural networks (SNNs) are able to learn and how they approach biological models. Chapter 4 focuses on the experimentation of solitonic optic neurons in thin layers of lithium niobate. Optical techniques for supervised and unsupervised learning are discussed. The entire chapter is accompanied by theoretical, simulative and experimental results. This chapter explains how an X-junction neuron is able to establish synapses, modify them, or erase them. The erasure of solitonic structures represents an important innovation in the field of nonlinear optics. Finally, Chapter 5 reports on the implementation of a network of neurons capable of processing information and storing it exactly as a human episodic memory does. The chapter ends with a number of insights into the lines of research that are currently being pursued on the basis of the results obtained.The book is meant for graduate students and researchers in the fields of optics, photonic applications, and biology. This book conceptualizes the EU¿s ambition at exercising a ¿joined up approach¿ (i.e. the mobilization of EU sectoral policies to realize EU foreign policy goals towards a third country). The framework is applied to three case studies: Switzerland and the Institutional Framework Agreement, Morocco and the Western Sahara issue, and Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With the help of these, the author argues that the EU is more likely to follow foreign policy objectives by leveraging on sectoral cooperation ties when the foreign policy objective concerns the conditions of participation in the single market (Switzerland). He also shows that a lack of member states¿ coherence concerning the compatibility of the foreign policy objective with overarching economic (Israel) or regional/geopolitical (Israel and Morocco) interests counteracts the exercise of a joined-up approach.

¿Authors, Factions, and Courts in Angevin England: A Literature of Personal Ambition (12th-13th Century) advances a model for historical study of courtly literature by foregrounding the personal aims, networks, and careers as the impetus for much of the period¿s literature. The book takes two authors as case studies ¿ Gerald of Wales and Walter Map ¿ to show how authors not only built their own stories but also used popular narratives and the tools of propaganda to achieve their own, personal goals. The purpose of this study is to overturn the top-down model of political patronage, in which patrons ¿ and particularly royal patrons ¿ set the cultural agenda and dictate literary tastes. Rather, Fabrizio De Falco argues that authors were often representative of many different interests expressed by local groups. To pursue those interests, they targeted specific political factions in the changeable political scenario of Angevin England. Their texts reveal a polycentric view of cultural production and its reception. The study aims to model a heuristic process which is applicable to other courtly texts besides the chosen case-studies.
This edited collection explores the pivotal role of the hotel industry in building Western Europe¿s tourism economy during the 20th century.The book brings together ten contributions focused on the same period, 1900-1970, to offer comparative perspectives from across the region including Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and Britain. This book focuses on the widespread use of deep neural networks and their various techniques in session-based recommender systems (SBRS). It presents the success of using deep learning techniques in many SBRS applications from different perspectives. For this purpose, the concepts and fundamentals of SBRS are fully elaborated, and different deep learning techniques focusing on the development of SBRS are studied.The book is well-modularized, and each chapter can be read in a stand-alone manner based on individual interests and needs. In the first chapter of the book, definitions and concepts related to SBRS are reviewed, and a taxonomy of different SBRS approaches is presented, where the characteristics and applications of each class are discussed separately. The second chapter starts with the basic concepts of deep learning and the characteristics of each model. Then, each deep learning model, along with its architecture and mathematical foundations, is introduced. Next, chapter 3 analyses different approaches of deep discriminative models in session-based recommender systems. In the fourth chapter, session-based recommender systems that benefit from deep generative neural networks are discussed. Subsequently, chapter 5 discusses session-based recommender systems using advanced/hybrid deep learning models. Eventually, chapter 6 reviews different learning-to-rank methods focusing on information retrieval and recommender system domains. Finally, the results of the investigations and findings from the research review conducted throughout the book are presented in a conclusive summary.This book aims at researchers who intend to use deep learning models to solve the challenges related to SBRS. This edited book brings together a diverse group of environmental science, sustainability, and health researchers to address the challenges posed by global mass poisoning caused by chromium contamination of soil and plants. In recent years, contamination of the environment by chromium has become a major concern. Chromium is a non-degradable, harmful, and toxic pollutant which negatively affects the environment. It is unique among the heavy metals found in industrial wastewater and sewage and sludge, as it may exist as a trivalent cation and as anion in the hexavalent state in the pH range of agricultural soils. It is used on a large scale in many different industries, including metallurgy, electroplating, production of paints and pigments, tanning, wood preservation, chemical production, and pulp and paper production. These industries are contributing larger amount of chromium, which can ultimately have significant adverse effects on biological and ecological activities of ecosystem. Chromium enters the food chain through consumption of plant material. A high concentration of chromium has been found to be harmful to vegetation. As the chromium concentration in plants increases, it adversely affects several biological parameters and eventually renders the soil barren.The book sheds light on this global environmental issue and proposes solutions to contamination through multi-disciplinary approaches and case studies from different parts of the world.This book is a valuable resource to students, academicians, researchers, and environmental professionals who are doing field work on chromium contamination throughout the world.
This book focuses on three main subjects: the DPRK's inability to survive as a nuclear state; the importance of Chinäs role in encouraging denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula; and the possibility of an alternative political organization for the DPRK including a transition to a market-economy in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons. The book approaches North Korean issues from the perspective that the regime cannot survive without nuclear weapons which, rather than being a genuine danger to other states, are bargaining chips for security and survival. The book includes views from prominent academics and practitioners, including a former British ambassador to North Korea, putting forward an ambitious set of recommendations and analyses based on hands-on experience in the region.
This project offers an original contribution to the interpretation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council that constitute the most authoritative doctrinal teaching within the Catholic Church. The chapters in this volume, published during the 60th anniversary of the Council (2022-2025), discuss three types of stumbling blocks: ¿Stumbling Blocks for Ecumenism¿, ¿Stumbling Blocks for Interfaith Dialogue,¿ and ¿Stumbling Blocks for Church-world Relations¿. Eight specialists of ecclesiology, comparative theology, intercultural theology, and theological ethics have each written chapters on a selected line of Vatican II that constitutes a ¿stumbling block¿ or ¿hard saying¿ for believers and theologians today. The views expressed in these chapters have been discussed in three response essays. The stumbling blocks have been selected from Lumen Gentium, Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate, and Gaudium et Spes. The selected lines discuss the difficulties the Catholic Church has with atheism and with the Eucharist as celebrated by Protestant ministers; how appreciation of other churches and religions goes hand in hand with defending the need of mission; and why the Council assigns different roles to priests and laity, making a distinction between the holiness of the Church and the sinfulness of its believers.

This book considers Samuel Taylor Coleridge¿s engagement with ¿Whig poetry¿: a tradition of verse from the eighteenth century which celebrated the political and constitutional arrangements of Britain as guaranteeing liberty. It argues that, during the 1790s, Coleridge was able to articulate radical ideas under the cover of widely accepted principles through his references to this poetry. He positioned his poetry within a mainstream discourse, even as he favoured radical social change. Jacob Lloyd argues that the poets Mark Akenside, William Lisle Bowles, and William Cowper each provided Coleridge with a kind of Whig poetics to which he responded. When these references are understood, much of Coleridge¿s work which seems purely personal or imaginative gains a political dimension. In addition, Lloyd reassess Coleridge¿s relationship with Thomas Percy¿s Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, to provide an original, political reading of ¿The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere¿. This book examines subjective wellbeing in China in terms of life and job satisfaction from a longitudinal perspective during the last decade. Using quantitative methods, the research presented in this volume performed a longitudinal analysis of data collected by the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2010 to 2018 to study the effects of social and economic transformations on life and job satisfaction among the Chinese population in this period.Using Mplus software, the authors applied different quantitative methods of longitudinal analysis ¿ such as latent growth models (LGM), latent growth mixture model (LGMM), parallel analysis, cross-lagged models (CL), latent change score (LCS), and multilevel longitudinal models (MLM) ¿ to explore the trajectory of three variables on the CFPS data between 2010 and 2018: life satisfaction, job satisfaction and the interplay between job and life satisfaction. The results reveal a process of growing inequalities between life and jobsatisfaction among the Chinese population over time. Life and Job Satisfaction in China: Exploring Longitudinal Analysis with Mplus will be of interest to sociologists, statisticians and applied researchers interested in applying quantitative methods to develop longitudinal studies of quality of life in China.
