This book discusses and analyzes past and ongoing national urban policy development efforts from around the globe, particularly those that can lead the way toward smart and green cities. In view of the adoption of the UN¿s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially the goal to have cities that are inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, urban policies that can help achieve this goal are urgently needed. The UN-Habitat (HABITAT III) puts national urban policies at the heart of implementing and rethinking the urban agenda, and identifies them as being integral to the equitable and sustainable development of nations. Against this background, this important book, which gathers contributions from academics, planners and urban specialists, reviews existing urban policies from developing and developed nations, discusses various countries¿ smart and green urban policies, and outlines the way forward. As such, it is essential reading for all social scientists, planners, designers, architects, and policymakers working on urban development around the world.
The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of several drugs is expected to be known to clinicians and researchers at all times. With advances in sciences and development of newer drugs very frequently, it is very important to keep your knowledge updated at all times. This title is a quick guide to researchers and clinicians for a quick reference. The title is also a vital resource for all streams of neurosciences (neuroanesthesia and neurointensive care) and is much different from a conventional pharmacology titles, being more reader friendly and to the point facilitated with numerous flowcharts and algorithms with each chapter being prepared in a standard structured manner.
This is Volume II in a three-volume set on the Behavior of Radionuclides in the Environment, focusing on Chernobyl. Now, so many years after the Chernobyl accident, new data is emerging and important new findings are being made. The book reviews major research achievements concerning the behavior of Chernobyl-derived radionuclides, including their air transport and resuspension, mobility and bioavailability in the soil-water environment, vertical and lateral migration in soils and sediments, soil-to-plant and soil-to-animal transfer, and water-to-aqueous biota transfer. The long-term dynamics of radionuclides in aquatic ecosystems are also discussed, in particular, the heavily contaminated cooling pond of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which is in the process of being decommissioned.Lessons learned from long-term research on the environmental behavior of radionuclides can help us understand the pathways of environmental contamination, which, in turn, will allow us to improve methods for modeling and predicting the long-term effects of pollution. This book features a wealth of original data and findings, many of which have never been published before, or were not available internationally. The contributing authors are experts from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus with more than 30 years of experience investigating Chernobyl-derived radionuclides in the environment. The content presented here can help to predict the evolution of environmental contamination following a nuclear accident, and specifically the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident.
This book presents selected peer-reviewed papers from the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering (AIDE 2019). The topics covered are broadly divided into four groups: artificial intelligence, machine vision and robotics, ambient intelligence, and data engineering. The book discusses recent technological advances in the emerging fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, bioinformatics, intelligent systems, cognitive systems, computational intelligence, neural networks, evolutionary computation, speech processing, Internet of Things, big data challenges, data mining, information retrieval, and natural language processing. Given its scope, this book can be useful for students, researchers, and professionals interested in the growing applications of artificial intelligence and data engineering.
This book compiles selected articles presented at the International Conference on Biotechnology & Biological Sciences, BIOSPECTRUM 2017, organized by the Department of Biotechnology, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata. Focusing on biotechnology-based analysis and intervention to address certain human diseases, the book includes a holistic discourse on disease profiling, molecular level analysis of diseases, and non-invasive medical interventions. It features articles on non-invasive treatment of iron deficiency anemia with iron nanoparticles; novel diagnosis methods based on microarray data; analysis using machine learning techniques like artificial neural network for early detection and treatment of cancer; and drug discovery for preventing the growth of human leukemic cells. Further, the book sheds light on in silico drug design using lipopeptides, and identifying the binding sites for their corresponding ligands. Presenting the concepts of the design of potent and safe antimicrobial compounds to fight multi drug resistant pathogens, it also includes interesting reviews on the design and development of various non-invasive methods, such as multi NIR wavelength probes to identify the risk areas in the diabetic foot at an early stage; and a low-cost cochlear implant prototype designed and developed from commercial off the-shelf components to empower the hearing impaired. The book appeals to students, academics and researchers in a wide range of subject areas, including biotechnology, life sciences, medicine and cancer research.
This book showcases selected conference papers addressing the sustainable future of ASEAN from the perspectives of science and technology disciplines. In addressing the 17 Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) envisioned by the United Nations in the domains of environment, health and well-being, posing potential means of reducing inequalities globally, the authors target specific issues and challenges confronting the fast-growing region of ASEAN and present suggestions for co-operation and commitment from governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and society at large, in line with the ASEAN Vision 2020. Papers are selected from the 3rd International Conference on the Future of ASEAN (ICoFA) 2019, organised by Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, whose conference theme ¿Charting the Sustainable Future of ASEAN¿ enables intellectual discourse on sustainability issues from science and technology, as well as business and the social sciences. The selection of papersis published in two books, comprised of scholarly and practical insights on sustainability in ASEAN. This book from science and technology scholars is of interest to researchers and policymakers interested in sustainability developments in the ASEAN region.
