The objective of the book is to show the complementarity and integration of food and non-food value chains for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy. One current challenge facing industry and the economy is to meet the needs of a growing world population while preserving the environment. The use of fossil energy resources for several decades has generated a decrease in reserves of these resources, together with a phenomenon of global warming due to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. More and more industrial sectors, including the chemical industry, are replacing fossil carbon with renewable carbon. The bioeconomy consists in using renewable biological resources to produce food, materials, and energy. A bioeconomy based on the green chemistry and biotechnologies is developing worldwide, as a lever for reducing the ecological footprint of human activities. The book is articulated around six parts, each dedicated to a keystone of the interface betweengreen chemistry and Agro-Food Industry.

This is the sixth volume of the Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series which aims to provide an accessible account of the state-of-the-art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general, and singularity theory is a crucible where different types of mathematical problems converge, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other parts of the subject, and in other subjects. This Volume VI goes together with Volume V and focuses on singular holomorphic foliations, which is a multidisciplinary field and a whole area of mathematics in itself. Singular foliations arise, for instance, by considering: The fibers of a smooth map between differentiable manifolds, with singularities at the critical points. The integral lines of a vector field, or the action of a Lie group on a manifold. The singularities are the orbits with special isotropy. The kernel of appropriate 1-forms. The singularities are the zeroes of the form.Open books, which naturally appear in singularity theory, are foliations with singular set the binding. These important examples highlight the deep connections between foliations and singularity theory. This volume consists of nine chapters, authored by world experts, which provide in-depth and reader-friendly introductions to some of the foundational aspects of the theory. These introductions also give insights into important lines of further research. Volume VI ends with an Epilogue by one of the current world leaders in the theory of complex foliations, with plenty of open questions and ideas for further research. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

This book aims to provide a wide range of real-world applications in using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for geographic observation, spatial modeling, and urban informatics. Specifically, UAVs are incredibly effective platforms for connecting people, places, and technology. This book explores the utility of UAVs for monitoring, measuring, and improving urban infrastructure systems, urban sustainability, and the urban environment. The dynamism of cities provides opportunities for economic, social, and environmental change, but benchmarking and measuring cities continues to be challenging. This challenge is due, at least in part, to a lack of monitoring systems that can collect and analyze data at a granular enough scale to capture the nuance of local phenomena. UAVs offer a promising mechanism to fill this niche, serving as a measurement platform that can rapidly and inexpensively collect data and monitor change in cities. However, their use is fraught with social, operational, regulatory, and technical challenges for successful deployments. This book provides a resource for urbanists (e.g., planners, geographers, sociologists, epidemiologists, engineers), educators, and students who work with geographic information and seek to enhance these data using data and information from unmanned aerial vehicles. At the same time, we provide operational and methodological frameworks for carrying out these advanced analyses in a manner that considers the challenges of incorporating UAVs in research within the urban environment. We provide six unique applications of UAVs for urban analysis, detailing relevant policy and empirical questions, UAV mission parameters, data collection, spatial modeling, and the associated empirical results. Further, we discuss how best to integrate these results into actionable geospatial intelligence and policy development to improve city infrastructure systems, sustainability, the environment, and neighborhood quality.

This second edition offers updates, new topics, and new short case studies, based on real stories from the health care arena, ensuring that each chapter of this book is rooted in descriptions of nursing practise that are grounded, salient narratives of nursing care. The reader is assisted to explore the ethical dimension of nursing practice: what it is and how it can be portrayed, discussed, and analysed within a variety of practice and theoretical contexts. One of the unique contributions of this book is to consider nursing not only in the context of the individual nurse - patient relationship but also as a social good that is of necessity limited, due to the ultimate limits on the nursing and health care resource. This book will help the reader consider what good nursing looks like, both within the context of limitations on resources, during crises situations, and under conditions of scarcity.Indeed, any discussion of ethical issues in nursing should be well grounded in a conceptualisation of nursing that nursing students and practising nursing can recognise, accept and engage with. Nursing, like medicine, social work and teaching has a clear moral aim - to do good. In the case of nursing to do good for the patient. However it is vital that in the pressurised, constrained, post-COVID-19 pandemic health service of the 21st century, we help nurses explore what this might mean for nursing practice and what can reasonably be expected of the individual nurse, and the nursing profession, in terms of good nursing care.

This book is the first comprehensive presentation of a central topic of stochastic geometry: random mosaics that are generated by Poisson processes of hyperplanes. It thus connects a basic notion from probability theory, Poisson processes, with a fundamental object of geometry. The independence properties of Poisson processes and the long-range influence of hyperplanes lead to a wide range of phenomena which are of interest from both a geometric and a probabilistic point of view. A Poisson hyperplane tessellation generates many random polytopes, also a much-studied object of stochastic geometry. The book offers a variety of different perspectives and covers in detail all aspects studied in the original literature. The work will be useful to graduate students (advanced students in a Master program, PhD students), and professional mathematicians. The book can also serve as a reference for researchers in fields of physics, computer science, economics or engineering.

  • - On Concepts, Measures and Uses
    av Blas M Vinagre
    585

Control Theory is an interdisciplinary field of engineering and mathematics that studies the behavior of dynamic systems with external stimuli and how to modify such behavior through feedback, and the very concept of dynamic system implies the study of how the trajectories of a point in a geometric space evolve in time. Thus, time is at the very foundation of control theory, and its development and achievements are conditioned both by the conception we have of it and by our way of measuring and using it. Following a quasi-chronological order, this work aims to give an overview of how these conceptions and these ways of measuring and using time are reflected in the paths followed by control theory from its origins to the present day.

    585

This book offers an in-depth investigation into the complexities of long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil structures, specifically focusing on the challenges posed by small data and environmental and operational changes (EOCs). Traditional contact-based sensor networks in SHM produce large amounts of data, complicating big data management. In contrast, synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-aided SHM often faces challenges with small datasets and limited displacement data. Additionally, EOCs can mimic the structural damage, resulting in false errors that can critically affect economic and safety issues. Addressing these challenges, this book introduces seven advanced unsupervised learning methods for SHM, combining AI, data sampling, and statistical analysis. These include techniques for managing datasets and addressing EOCs. Methods range from nearest neighbor searching and Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling to innovative offline and online learning frameworks, focusing on data augmentation and normalization. Key approaches involve deep autoencoders for data processing and novel algorithms for damage detection. Validated using simulated data from the I-40 Bridge, USA, and real-world data from the Tadcaster Bridge, UK, these methods show promise in addressing SAR-aided SHM challenges, offering practical tools for real-world applications. The book, thereby, presents a comprehensive suite of innovative strategies to advance the field of SHM.

This book on current approaches to the use of drugs in dentistry, now in an extensively revised second edition, aims to equip practitioners with a sound understanding of both the scientific evidence for various interventions and the comparative efficacy of those interventions. The focus is on the drugs most commonly used in conjunction with dental treatment, including local anesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics, sedatives, and drugs for the management of medical emergencies. Summaries of the scientific evidence from the available published literature are provided, with assessment of the level and quality of the evidence base. A unique aspect of the book is its focus on current, evidence-based recommendations from professional organizations with regard to special topics, such as antibiotic prophylaxis, pediatric considerations, and management of medically compromised patients. Emphasis is placed on evidence from randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and in order to further enhance the up-to-date nature of the book, each chapter includes guidance on online resources, such as useful non-commercial websites.
