This is the fifth volume of the Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series which aims to provide an accessible account of the state-of-the-art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general, and singularity theory is a crucible where different types of mathematical problems converge, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other parts of the subject, and in other subjects. This Volume V focuses on singular holomorphic foliations, which is a multidisciplinary field and a whole area of mathematics in itself. Singular foliations arise, for instance, by considering: The fibers of a smooth map between differentiable manifolds, with singularities at the critical points. The integral lines of a vector field, or the action of a Lie group on a manifold. The singularities are the orbits with special isotropy. The kernel of appropriate 1-forms. The singularities are the zeros of the form. Open books, which naturally appear in singularity theory as foliations with singular set the binding. These important examples highlight the deep connections between foliations and singularity theory. This volume, like its companion Volume VI, also focused on foliations, consists of nine chapters, authored by world experts, which provide in-depth and reader-friendly introductions to some of the foundational aspects of the theory. These introductions also give insights into important lines of further research. The volume starts with a foreword by one of the current world leaders in the theory of complex foliations. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

  • - What Culturally Holds Our Society Together
    av Christian Stegbauer
    353,-

In this book, it is explained how we learn from each other and how people adapt their behavior to one another. We orient ourselves to others by observing how they behave in specific situations. The analysis of relationships is actually the domain of network research, which has traditionally focused on strong and weak ties. However, this book explores super weak ties, which are often not consciously perceived, as their significance unfolds behind the backs of us all. Although one can hardly speak of relationships in the traditional sense, these super weak ties are often just as influential as stronger ones. The orienting effect is particularly pronounced when there are similarities in interests and situations between observers and those being observed. Without transmissions facilitated by super weak ties, it would be challenging to arrive at cultural commonalities in society.

  • - Strategic and Tactical Approaches for Attack and Defense in the Digital Age
    av Peter Kestner
    353,-

The Art of Cyber Warfare explores the strategic and tactical approaches for offense and defense in the digital age. Drawing on historical conflicts from Sun Tzu to Carl von Clausewitz, the author illustrates that, despite changed conditions such as time, location, means, and resources - but not the laws of physics - it is possible to learn from past actions and reactions. The author aims to demonstrate in this book that, in reality, we have only transferred old methods into our current era but have forgotten to translate their reasons, effects, and the resulting lessons. For, as it has been for thousands of years, the reasons for human-created conflicts remain the same: wealth, fame, power, honor, or desire. Can we learn something from history for present and future (cyber) wars?

  • - The American Experience
    av James A Shaw
    436

Historical Diseases from a Modern Perspective: The American Experience is a must read for any student of history or fan of historical novels. Every disease section contains fascinating historical insights relevant to the American experience, including how the 1900 outbreak of plague in San Franciso was contained, why the flow of the Chicago River was reversed, why "chicken pox parties" were once common, how the scourge of yellow fever was abated, and why poor southerners were once considered lazy and shiftless. Those readers interested in military history will learn how smallpox impacted troop strength in the Revolutionary War, dysentery in the Civil War, influenza in WWI, malaria in WWII, and sexually transmitted diseases across all wars. The social history of alcohol and opioid use is outlined as is the pre-antibiotic treatment of syphilis and gonorrhea, giving rise to the quip, "A night with Venus and a lifetime with mercury, " and the nickname "clap."The use of anthrax as a tool of bioterrorism, the debilitating effects of scurvy, and the horror of leprosy are all discussed, along with multiple other diseases of historical interest. The text begins by outlining historical theories of disease causation, prevention and cure, to provide a contextual understanding for the reader. The ensuing chapters describe how historical diseases acquired their traditional monikers (Spanish flu, ship fever, ague, blue death, breakbone fever, scarlet fever, etc.) and how they were treated before the era of modern medicine. Emphasis is placed on the impact of disease outbreaks on society and how the understanding, treatment, and prevention of these diseases developed over time. The threat of historical disease reemergence due to waning vaccine immunities, vaccine hesitancy, antibiotic resistance and climate change is noted as a subtext throughout the book - a peril of global concern at this time. The book covers a large array of historical diseases, grouped for clarity and understanding within the broad categories of contagious diseases, vector-borne/zoonotic diseases, fecal-oral diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, substance use disorders, parasitic diseases, nutritional diseases, fungal diseases, and soil-related bacterial diseases.

This book presents technoeconomic challenges, recent trends, and developments toward sustainable algal biofuels and biorefinery. The exponential increase in population and thus the demand for energy, the ever-rising threats to climate change with conventional fossil fuels consumption, fluctuations in fossil fuels price and geopolitical instability have made each and every country of the world to think over its energy independence and security by increasing its own domestic energy production and reducing dependence on scarce fossil fuels. The global need to shift towards a sustainable source of energy has led to the discovery of third and fourth generation biofuels, in which microalgae and their genetically modified strains have been exploited. However, these simple photosynthetic organisms are difficult to select and cultivate for the production of biodiesel. Genetic engineering has opened provisions for the introduction of desired traits to such useful strains. There are also scopes for designing of novel photobioreactors (PBRs) having strain-specific physicochemical parameters, adequate CO2 and nutrient supply, and so on. The role of microalgae in CO2 sequestration from the environment is well known fact. Wastewater treatment plants can be used a raceway pond for the microalgal biomass production, and thus, obtained biomass can be used for biofuels and biochemical production. Mathematical modelling can be used to understand the complex phenomena inside the photobioreactor, which can be a great help to overcome the limitations related to design and scale up of PBRs. Flow hydrodynamics in PBRs has significant effect on the microalgae growth. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be used to study operating and geometry factors in PBRs that influence the flow dynamics, such as the inlet gas flow rate, mixing, mass transfer, reactor geometry. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) particularly artificial neural network model (ANN model), statistical and evolutionary learning-based techniques are some innovative approaches in manipulating and optimizing productivity and costs in algal biofuel production. This book is aimed to bring several aspects of algal biorefinery and microalgal biofuel production, challenges, and future perspective of microalgal biofuel production at a single place.

Drees was also Editor-in-Chief of Zygon, Journal of Religion & Science, between 2008 and 2018, and served as President of the European Society for the Study of Science and Theology (ESSSAT) between 2002 and 2008. In 2018, he was elected as member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW). This contributed volume builds on Drees' expansive and provocative scholarly contributions, notably around the concept and meaning of naturalism and the humanities to the fields of science and religion, as exemplified by his works Religion, Science and Naturalism (1996) and What Are the Humanities For? (2021). In a time where more and more young people across the globe are entering higher education such cross-disciplinary explorations and (re-)evaluations are vital to the field. Accordingly, by approaching his work from a variety of disciplines this collection illuminates the broad reach of Drees' work and provides scholars from various fields with many new and rich opportunities avenues for research.

This book discusses a range of topics that are essential to understanding cyber security, including legal implications and technical aspects, cyber detection, and minimising the threats so that governments and organisations can function without noticeable degradation of service. Unlike other technological threats, cyber security threats have the potential to destroy governments and undermine democratic processes - which makes an overarching cyber security strategy essential for all functioning governments. Thus, the book serves as a guide for developing strategies and ideas in the field and as a motivator for other governments and interested parties to develop and implement effective strategies. Arguably the most difficult aspect of these strategies is their implementation, which will require a cultural sea change in governments' approaches to handling cyber security and developing a regulatory framework that links organisations and governments in a secure working environment. The development of cyber security strategies calls for new skills at the technical and user levels alike. However, IT skills are sometimes in short supply, and without a government policy on cyber security training, the lack of these skills could hamper the full potential of cyber security. The book explores various aspects and challenges of cyber security strategy and highlights the benefits and drawbacks, offering in-depth insights into the field.
