  • - Concepts, Challenges and Future Research Directions
    av Christine Harland
    1 660

The book focuses on the development of the concept of supply chain management and the current state of knowledge on supply chain structure and infrastructure. It draws together knowledge from materials management, purchasing and supply management, operations management, industrial marketing and logistics perspectives, as well as industrial economics, organizational behaviour, systems thinking, and strategic management. Three key conceptual themes are developed: (1) the recognition of supply chain management as a multi-level endeavour, (2) the increasing aspirations for supply chain management to be a strategic, not just an operational concept, and (3) the view of the supply chain management research community as an academic discipline. The book also examines supply chain structure in terms of dyads, triads, chains, networks, supply bases, supply systems and supply markets. Supply chain infrastructure is discussed in terms of processes, roles and behaviours, and draws on extensive international empirical research. Challenges for researchers are addressed, such as interconnectedness in complex supply systems, the need for greater resilience, and how public policy and public value can be impacted by research. It concludes with a co-authored chapter that examines the potential future identity of supply chain management.

    - Urban Development Dynamics in Israel
    av Shlomit Flint Ashery
    1 568,-

This book examines how map-based collaboration software can facilitate negotiations in areas undergoing contentious pressures for significant change. Based on case studies from Israel, it aims to introduce a useful model of planning implementation as an outcome of complex interaction to reduce the gap between planning and urban reality. It puts an analytical realist foundation for a productive discussion of the role of future planning and bares meaningful scientific contributions to the general frame of the negotiating process and implementation, which still needs further research and elaboration.Geodesign, a cutting-edge planning approach that is rooted in the history of planning practice, has become one of the most popular approaches for sustainable planning and design activities after 2000s. Planners tend to think of design at a site scale, but geodesign covers a variety of scales, bridging the gap between the regional and the local contexts. This is important because to be practically effective and politically prudent, "smart growth" plans need to make sense across a spectrum of scales and disciplines. This ranges from design, urban design, community planning, town and city planning, and regional planning, up to planning for mega-regions.

  • - Husserl's Phenomenology Revisited
    av Roberta de Monticelli
    1 532,-

This book presents the idea of the gift of bonds as the core intuition of phenomenology, constituting it into that method of philosophical research that Husserl had in mind when he characterized phenomenology as the culmination and fulfillment of Western philosophy. The book clarifies this claim while offering a unitary key to the whole of Husserl's published and posthumous work. The idea of the gift of bonds unfolds progressively as a key to understanding the related notions of essence, material apriori, non-empirical data, structure, ideality, and value.By unveiling the ¿unitary foundation¿, the key concept discussed in the Third Logical Investigation, the present book presents this central notion as capturing the very idea of concreteness, as experienced and phenomenologically described in terms of qualitative ¿plenä, and the not less important class of ideal or abstract objects. The author takes this concept to be the core theoretical idea of the entire phenomenomenological approach to reality and philosophical research, and argues for this claim in chapters IV-V as it remains a leading thread throughout all chapters of this book. This book appeals to students and researchers working in phenomenology.

    - Proposals and Dilemmas for Discussion
    av Patricia Unger Raphael Bataglia
    1 568,-

This book shows how to use discussions of moral dilemmas as a strategy to develop moral competence in children and youth in educational environments using the Konstanz Method of Dilemma Discussion (KMDD). This method was developed by the German psychologist Georg Lind (1847-2021), who defines moral competence as an ability to solve problems and conflicts based on moral principles or values, through reflection, dialogue and deliberation, instead of using force, violence, deception and manipulation. According to Lind, this ability can be developed in children and youth through KMDD. The book has two parts. The first part brings together an original chapter written by Georg Lind about his decades of research on assessment and education of moral competence, and other 13 chapters written by different authors analyzing the theoretical foundations of moral development and moral competence as psychological constructs and their applications to different aspects of social life, as well as empirical research analyzing the application of different methods of dilemma discussion in educational contexts. The second part presents 20 moral dilemmas to be used in dilemma discussion sessions.Studies on Moral Competence: Proposals and Dilemmas for Discussion is the English edition of a book originally published in Portuguese for the Brazilian market and will be of interest to teachers and researchers interested in learning about the theoretical foundations and possible applications of an effective method to develop moral competence in educational environments. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

This open access book provides a detailed exploration of the phase behaviour of, and interfacial properties in, complex colloidal mixtures (e.g., clay, milk, blood). Insights into colloids have been at the heart of many innovations in different industries. The big question underlying these innovations is how can colloidal systems be formulated and designed towards the desired properties? To do this, the forces between the colloidal particles need to be controlled. Adding depletants (non-adsorbing polymers or small colloids) is key to controlling the attractive interactions. Colloids and the Depletion Interaction provides the qualitative insights and quantitative tools to understand and predict such forces in colloidal dispersions. It offers a concise introduction to the history and fundamentals of the depletion interaction in, and phase behaviour of, colloidal dispersions. Why does adding polymers lead to attractive forces between colloidal particles? What determines the phase stability of multi-component colloidal systems? These include colloid--polymer mixtures, binary colloidal mixtures, and anisotropic particles such as clay platelets, cubes and rod-like viruses. Conceptual explanations are accompanied by experimental and computer simulation results throughout. Illustrations of depletion effects in colloid science, biology and technology demonstrate its wider significance. The concluding outlook provides the scope of challenges and possibilities in this exciting field of science. This second updated and enlarged edition contains 12 Chapters. It is an ideal book for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in physical chemistry, chemical engineering and soft matter physics. Besides providing a fundamental understanding of depletion interactions in colloidal mixtures, it gives background information on colloidal stability and phase behaviour in general. For experienced scientists and engineers working on mixtures of colloids and non-adsorbing (bio)polymers or colloidal particles, this book serves as a reference for understanding depletion interactions in systems of their specific interest.

This book constitutes a review of recent developments in the theory and practical exploitation of the elliptical model for measured data in both classical and emerging areas of signal processing. It develops techniques usable in (among other areas): graph learning, robust clustering, linear shrinkage, information geometry, subspace-based algorithm design, and semiparametric and misspecified estimation. The various contributions combine to show how the goal of inferring information from a set of acquired data, recurrent in statistical signal processing, can be achieved, even when the common practical assumption of Gaussian distribution in the data is not valid. The elliptical model propounded maintains the performance of its inference procedures even when that assumption fails. The elliptical distribution, being fully characterized by its location vector, its scatter/covariance matrix and its so-called density generator, used to describe the impulsiveness of the data, is sufficiently flexible to model heterogeneous applications. This book is of interest to any graduate students and academic researchers wishing to acquaint themselves with the latest research in an area of rising consequence. It is also of assistance to practitioners working in data analysis, wireless communications, radar, and image processing.

This book highlights the progresses achieved in the role of nurses in the hospital, critical care unit, community field, hospital, and at home for patient care management in SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), especially in the South Asia and the Middle East. Nurses and allied health care professionals play a significant role in preventing and treating the infectious disease pandemic and epidemic that is COVID-19 and, on the front lines of treatment, they suffer an inescapable health risk due to the fact that they must live with, encounter, and accept the hazard of dealing with developing respiratory illnesses. Nurses also endure significant stress, burden, and mental health concerns as a result of worldwide respiratory epidemics. Because of this, nurses require ongoing assistance and training in order to increase their crisis preparation and efficacy while also coping with psychological issues and ensuring their own well-being. This book reflects the experience of Indianand Saudian nurses, develops on COVID-19 stress and challenges and informs on the technologies employed. Nurses' experiences caring for patients with COVID-19 around the world are scarcely documented. The research that has been done so far have mostly focused on the physical and psychological effects of stress. This expands on the role of nurse managers and hospital administration with key stakeholders emphasizing the need of providing support for nurses in their role, especially considering that the positive leadership responsibilities of nurse managers are highly regarded by nurses.

This thesis provides an in-depth investigation of effective non-Hermiticity and topology in many-mode, non-interacting, bosonic systems. It also establishes the extent to which one must move beyond the Hamiltonian, closed-system setting, in order to uncover signatures of genuine symmetry-protected topological (SPT) physics in "free" (mean-field) bosons. While SPT phases of free fermionic matter and their associated zero-energy boundary-localized modes have been thoroughly explored, similar physics in free bosonic systems still remains elusive. No fermionic counterpart exists for the distinctive dynamical behavior that arises from the effective non-Hermiticity, intrinsic even at equilibrium, to bosonic Hamiltonians. Therefore, a much needed paradigm shift is required to address major conceptual roadblocks in the search for SPT bosonic phases. The analysis within develops, in particular, the notion of topological metastability in quadratic bosonic systems subject to Markovian dissipation. The resulting dynamical paradigm was found to be characterized by both a sharp separation between transient and asymptotic dynamics and non-trivial topological invariants. It also features long-lived boundary-localized "Majorana boson" and "Dirac boson" modes, which realize tight bosonic analogues to the edge modes characteristic of fermionic SPT phases. This comprehensive look into non-interacting bosonic systems breaks important new ground for re-imagining quantum phenomena beyond equilibrium, with novel applications in quantum science.

  • - A Complex Systems Approach
    av Yair Neuman
    411

Crowds are misleading, both in their simplicity and in their complexity. On the one hand, they behave according to expected trends; on the other, they present sudden shifts and frantic, unexpected behavior. Therefore, "betting against the crowd," whether in politics, sports, or finance, requires a deep understanding of the crowd's dynamics. In this book, Prof. Neuman addresses this challenge by delving into the complexity of crowds. The book involves foundational issues and novel ideas, such as why crowds behave unexpectedly, why betting against the crowd is possible only in short time frames, why is it important to be attentive to suspicious signs that are indicative of the crowd's behavior, and why the long tail of fatalities in armed conflicts leaves us surprised by blitz attacks of violent mobs. The book combines scientific knowledge, experiments, and accessible, often humorous, exposition. It can be read by anyone with a basic science education who seeks to understand crowds and how one can act within and against them.

This book explores how the fragile and lengthy process of developing a city brand can be carefully managed. Necessary background information is explained, numerous experiences are reported, and targeted city branding is inspired in a variety of ways. The dream of every brand maker: to develop a city into a strong city brand - perhaps even a myth. The creation of myths remains a curiosity. Is it targeted, are there relevant recipes for success, and can those responsible be identified? Above all: Can the process be replicated? How do brand makers deal with the complexity of the phenomena of cities and city brands? How do they give the arduous process of creating a city brand a reasonable chance of success? How do brand makers deal with the often biting criticism from outside and the nagging self-doubt?Successful cityscapes arise from the trials and tribulations of complex and sometimes random processes. In the course of global city competition, this evolutionaryprocess is enriched with the achievements of the craft of branding. This is not a guarantee of success. This book critically examines existing organizational learning theories that often center on employees and adopt a neo-classical organizational view. In this book, organizational learning (OL) is conceptualized from a relational governance perspective. Departing from the relational economics approach, it describes organizations as dynamic nexuses of stakeholders' resources and interests, extending beyond conventional intra-organizational contexts to encompass an open systems view. By viewing organizations as independent entities, distinct from individual stakeholders, the author introduces the concept of transactions as the fundamental unit of analysis in organization theory. Stakeholders contribute diverse rationalities, and OL emerges as the process of relationalizing these rationalities, enabling multi-contextual transactions within organizations. This book sheds light on epistemological and ontological challenges in OL literature, such as the OL paradox and anthropomorphism. To address these issues, the author advocates a shift from methodological individualism to methodological relationism, wherein OL becomes a micro-meso-relational process involving both stakeholders and the organization as an entity. Combining conceptual insights with empirical evidence from a multinational company's case study, the book showcases how relational learning can be practically applied in organizations. The findings corroborate the conceptual framework, supporting the notion of organizations as resource-rich nexuses and learning as a comprehensive relational process involving both entities and stakeholders. This book offers an essential contribution to the field. It appeals to scholars and practitioners interested in organizational studies, corporate governance, and relational economics.

  • - A Festschrift in Honor of Jean Petitot 's 80th Birthday
    av Alessandro Sarti
    2 192

Jean Petitot is a polyhedric thinker whose contributions has been fundamental in a number of disciplines, such as epistemology, morphodynamics, differential geometry, structural semiotics, neurogeometry, phenomenology, linguistics, cognitive grammars, the theory of catastrophes, social sciences, literary studies, and aesthetics. This book is a homage to his huge contribution about the main concepts of morphogenesis and meaning that constitute the center of gravity around which Petitotian reflection revolves and returns. The scientific path of Jean Petitot develops between these two poles, topology and meaning. At stake it was to challenge the hiatus separating the exact sciences from the humanities that was the main point of the Petitot seminar of EHESS Epistemology of Models. By designing the appropriate qualitative dynamics between the two poles, form and meaning, it is possible to understand the Saussurian sign in structural semiotics, or the Greimasian semiotic square fordeep narrative structures or even the canonical formula of the myth of Lévi Strauss in structural anthropology. These are just few results in applying the theory of catastrophes to the emergence of meaning. The book is a collection of testimonies by distinguished authors who worked extensively with Jean Petitot in the different fields of Mathematics, Neurogeometry, Semiotics, Aesthetics, and Epistemology. An extensive bibliography of Petitot's work is also presented.

  • - A Cultural-Historical Theory of Practice Development
    av Joce Nuttall
    725

The book presents a conceptual framework for understanding leadership for effective educator learning in early childhood settings. The book describes how leaders can move centre practices from crisis to stabilization. It argues that a core component of leaders' work in early childhood settings is to construct and enact epistemological accounts of practice change. The book includes case examples that bring to life the contexts early childhood services and services leaders who participated in the research. The book also describes the application of cultural-historical activity theory to the development of practice in early childhood education. It describes how background theory, literature, and data can be synthesized to create new focal theory in education. Readers will benefit from the theory that is presented, establishing a sound basis for testing in future research in schools as well as in early childhood education. "Joce Nuttall and team are congratulated for their ground-breaking scholarly endeavour in designing, implementing, validating findings, and then writing a book that unambiguously connects theory-policy-practice in enacting leadership in early childhood settings. This book is ambitious, eloquent, and inspirational. The research was driven by a bold vision to build a new theorisation of early childhood leadership. The writing style of the book makes the complex clear and easy to digest, and thereby strengthening its readability and understanding. The comparative lens adopted in the study, underscores the neoliberal control of the working lives of early childhood leaders in both Australia and England. The use of case study narratives to explain various aspects including the study design and methodology, was refreshingly engaging. Notes of encouragement addressed to novice researchers such as those embarking on higher degree studies, also provide apt guidance about the messiness of conducting qualitative research. The book is infused with lots of examples demonstrating the transformative power of learning - especially when expertly scaffolded by the research team, and thereby increasing practitioner agency and quality improvement across the early childhood setting. If professional autonomy is the driver of reform and change, then we must find ways to nurture strong educational leaders who can think outside the box. Overall, Nuttall and team succeed in arousing learning-rich possibilities for reimagining early childhood leadership in theory and in practice, and thereby making a magnificent contribution to the scholarship of educational leadership." This book aims to explore different aspects of networks in relation to the archaeology of buildings. It is divided into three major themes: the trade in materials, the exchange of knowledge (of techniques and/or materials), and the exchange of style. Within each of these themes, two primary aspects are addressed--notably, who were the actors and how did the network function? In medieval and post-medieval Europe, the development of buildings, of style and the use of material, cannot be understood from a local, regional or even national perspective. Not only were the borders different than in modern-day Europe, but the contacts of inhabitants also transcended local and regional boundaries. This volume describes the continuous exchange of aesthetic ideals, technological developments and building materials during this period. This volume is a culmination of four years of sessions held at the European Archaeology Association (EAA) conference between 2016-2020 on the topic. It is of interest to archaeologists, architects, and scholars of built heritage.

    - Natural Landscapes and Human Adaptations to Diversity
    av José M García-Ruiz
    1 684

This book studies mountains with a global perspective, like a complex topographic and topoclimatic mosaic organized in altitudinal belts that are influenced by a huge variability in slopes, soils, lithology and insolation. Furthermore, the presence of lower temperatures, higher precipitation and the seasonal presence of snow create conditions conductive to supporting various life forms and natural geomorphological and hydrological processes. The integration of environmental and human aspects highlights the impacts of human activities and climate fluctuations on soil hydrology, soil erosion, water resources, and landscape/landforms evolution. After presenting the way in which humans (from Prehistory to Alexander von Humboldt) discovered the mountains, subsequent chapters try to underline the importance of mountains in generating water resources and hydropower for lowlands, serving as biodiversity hotspots, and contributing to cultural diversity. The book delves into the role ofhuman actives in transforming the natural landscapes and creating new cultural landscapes. This exploration considers the significance of altitudinal belts in shaping the spatial and temporal organization of land uses which, in turn, have been determined by population growth and the development of regional and national markets. Additionally, the book illustrates the effect of global change on mountain evolution, exploring their consequences on landscape characteristics and dynamics as well as on the planetary role of the mountains. It concludes by offering a unique perspective on enhancing mountain conservation in order to preserve cultures, land uses, and landscapes.

    - Knowledge and Experience in Legal Education and Practice from the Late Roman Republic to Artificial Intelligence
    av Luca Siliquini-Cinelli
    1 684

Law's regulatory reach has grown significantly over the past few decades. Yet, at the same time, law schools and legal professions in Western and Western-oriented jurisdictions have undergone an acute crisis. How is this possible? In this insightful and wide-ranging book, Luca Siliquini-Cinelli argues that these trends are in fact complementary manifestations of a single phenomenon--namely, that law is and will always be more capable of regulating social interaction without the experiential contribution of legal experts. Siliquini-Cinelli contends that the separation of law's regulatory function from legal experts is structurally linked to the former's nature and operational dynamics as an intellectual artifact to be used for ordering purposes. As a product of the intellect, law is a matter of knowledge, not experience. In fact, Siliquini-Cinelli holds, law's artifactuality voids experience, including that of legal experts, making it redundant. This explains how law can thrive as a regulatory phenomenon while the very places where future legal professionals are formed and those places where it is practised are in crisis. To show this, Siliquini-Cinelli embarks upon a historical, philosophical, and comparative analysis of law's artifactuality, focusing on the teaching, study and practise of law as intellectual endeavours, from the advent of juristic activities in the Late Roman Republic to current legal pedagogies, practices, and reforms in Civil and Common law jurisdictions. In so doing, Siliquini-Cinelli employs the Latin phrase 'scientia iuris' to explain why and how legal education and practice pursue knowledge at the expense of experience, and the serious implications this has for lawyering activities. Moving beyond established narratives, Siliquini-Cinelli argues that 'scientia iuris' ought not be reduced to dogmatic analysis (scientia iuris as doctrina iuris). Rather, 'scientia iuris' denotes the knowledge of the law sought by all those who teach, study, and practise it, and which is actualised through a form of legal thinking and argumentation that moves along reason's metaphysical, constructivist lines (scientia iuris as cognitio iuris). Thus, scientia iuris is not the prerogative of a few legal scholars; rather, it lies at the very core of Western legal education and practice, broadly understood. The relevance of Siliquini-Cinelli's original and interdisciplinary analysis is profound and far-reaching: the crisis that legal education and practice are undergoing is not an isolated, or accidental, event; it is a consequence of the very ways in which law has been taught, studied, and practised since Rome. Endorsements'This richly researched book on the history of scientia iuris is a work on epistemology which argues that the legal model is highly problematic and will eventually be able to function without the intervention of jurists and lawyers. Such a thesis is based upon a very detailed knowledge both of philosophy and of the legal primary and secondary sources from Roman to modern times. The author is at home with Ancient Greek, Latin, French, German and Italian texts and this means that the research basis for the thesis not only is unusually profound - encompassing both the civil and the common law - but will make a major contribution to historical jurisprudence, to comparative legal history, to comparative law in general and to legal theory. This is legal scholarship of the highest order.' Geoffrey Samuel, Emeritus Professor of Law, Kent Law School'In this exceptionally robust and expertly-researched new book, Luca Siliquini-Cinelli presents a provocative thesis. He proposes that the experience of legal experts is redundant when it comes to the success of law as a regulatory framework. Oscillating between historical, material, philosophical and literary frames, Siliquini-Cinelli introduces what he terms 'law's artifactuality'. Law's artifactuality as an intellectual phenomenon of social ordering is established through a comparative excavation of legal pedagogy and practice stretching from the Late Roman Republic to contemporary contexts to expose law as a product of the intellect. Law is therefore a matter of knowledge, not experience. Siliquini-Cinelli makes a sophisticated philosophical case for scientia iuris as a special form of knowledge that exists distinct from experience. This is at the core of the book in claiming that the current detachment of law from legal experts is a symptom of law's essential and enduring artifactuality. This detachment is therefore incubated and internal to law's essential nature rather than a consequence of the prophetic shadow of AI. This book is a vital and timely intervention in the current crisis gripping legal education and legal practice and their future relation with AI. The book is a stellar example of the profound importance of historical and philosophical thinking in law as a means to understanding contemporary phenomena in law. Siliquini-Cinelli executes his analysis masterfully and brings fundamental insights to the debate on knowledge and experience in law.' Kimberley Brayson, Professor of Critical Jurisprudence, Leicester Law School'This book is not for the faint-hearted or the narrow-minded. It is not for the narrow-minded as it paints on the broadest of canvasses, from the Late Roman Republic to the Middle Ages to the Methodological Legal Positivism that characterises modernity. It is not for the faint-hearted as it makes the bold claim that law does not need lawyers. The reason law does not need lawyers is that law is based on knowledge, not experience. If Luca Siliquini-Cinelli is right, then Oliver Wendell Holmes is wrong. The stakes couldnot be higher.' Joshua Neoh, Associate Professor of Law, ANU College of Law
