  • - A True Account of Surviving Life in a Homeless Shelter in Belfast
    av Della B
    216,-

I am a 47-year-old respectable, ordinary woman. I sold my home in Belfast at the height of the housing market boom. After taking advice from someone I thought to be financially astute, I invested most of the proceeds from the sale. This resulted in me being almost broke and homeless to boot. Consequently, I found myself moving into a hostel in Belfast. My story, in journal form, gives an insight into how this affected my life. I fell into depression, was prescribed anti-depressants, drank to excess on an almost daily basis, but eventually, slowly, began the fight to get out.The three months spent inside the hostel are a total revelation; a culture shock to say the least, and I impart a bit of the life within, providing detailed accounts of horrors of which the outside world is unaware. I lived amongst a cross section of Belfast's undesirables, learned how to survive, fought the system, and unexpectedly, made a friend along the way.I confide in only a handful of people and do my damndest to hide it from the rest. I can accept help from no one on the outside, for fear of jeopardising my fight to be re-housed. My story is as accurate an account of life in a hostel as it is possible to be. Nothing is left out. My determination is fierce and I eventually do go home. It all occurred in 2009.Della B. lives in South Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is inspired by ordinary people who achieve extraordinary things.http://SBPRA.com/DellaB

Two brothers engaged in drug smuggling cross the U.S. Mexican border so often that they know precisely when and where U.S. Border Patrol agents are watching. In The Night Sun, Miguel and Cesar Ramirez-Barrios come under fire from rival drug cartels and the American Border Patrol, as well as their own cartel while crossing the border with a large amount of cocaine.Corruption, greed, and deceit entangle these powerful groups as they wrestle for control of this dangerous zone of Southern Arizona near Ambos Nogales, the official port of entry on the international border. When the mutilated bodies of two American border patrol agents are found there, Alejandra Mendoza Thomas is the local TV personality covering the gruesome murders.Miguel and Cesar's ill-fated journey moving their drugs promptly takes an unexpected detour that puts them at the epicenter of the cartels' campaign of carnage along the border. In desperation, Cesar prays to Jesus Malverde, the patron saint of narco traffickers, and also pays homage to The Night Sun, the Mayan legend of the jaguar. While Miguel doesn't believe in the Mexican black arts, he too begins to pray as their journey north explodes in violence.About the Author: Raul Novo emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1960 from Havana, Cuba. He is a criminal defense lawyer in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. Most of his clients are from Mexico and Central America. • - A Memoir
    av Lisa Stalvey
    289

"Lisa was a big part of L'Orangerie's success, compliments from Johnny Carson to Catherine Deneuve and everyone else in between." - Latifa Franco, award-winning chef"Our careers have taken us in very different directions, but she was my mentor and inspiration from the start, so I guess it seemed fitting to write this and express my love and appreciation. Lisa is a woman who broke many molds in the culinary industry, forging a path for up-and-coming female chefs during an era of male-dominated kitchens. She displayed power and grace, both paired with a unique palate and attention to details. She was everything I wanted to be." - Carol Wallack of Sola, named Best New Restaurant in Chicago, and one of Chicago's Best ChefsMy memoir spans the first twelve years of my life as a professional chef. I was living in hell from September 1980 until 1993, facing many unforeseen challenges in every aspect of my life.I planned on making this a cookbook twenty-two years ago. Then one day in 2011, it came to me that it needed to be a memoir, so I just sat down and wrote. While writing this book, I found myself craving to feel hungry again, and with that came misery. The old habits of anorexia truly never leave. They linger around waiting for the chance to pounce again.I think that both my parents being artists of sorts gave me an interesting view of life. We were totally allowed our freedom and they gave us their trust. As I was being rushed to the hospital staring at three of my severed fingers floating in ice water, I couldn't believe what just happened. At age twenty-four, I was pretty, thin, and working as a line cook among Hollywood's elite. I was about to get married, but it all came to a screeching halt in 1980, when I severed three of my fingers in an industrial Cuisinart in the kitchen where I worked.I describe my journey through the most difficult time of my life: suffering from anorexia and living with a disability. How could my life continue after losing three of my precious fingers, and on my right hand, no less?Miraculously, I pulled myself out of anorexia by finally seeing my body as it really was. I began to slowly heal, though it took almost thirty-one more years. I read self-help books, recited affirmations, and began to seriously search for the missing piece of my heart. This is my account of being a woman in a male-dominated industry, complete with a complicated relationship with food and a man, resulting in a long self-destructive streak. I have been cooking for thirty-eight years professionally, including an apprenticeship in 1980 with Wolfgang Puck, ultimately becoming his head chef at Spago, Sunset."I can't wait to read anything that she writes." - Marc Vetri, Philadelphia restaurateur, named one of the Top Ten Chefs in AmericaProfessional chef Lisa Stalvey has cooked for some of the most famous people in the world. Currently, she owns and runs two catering businesses, Malibu Catering and The Malibu Chef in Malibu, California. She grew up on the west side of Los Angeles, and now lives in Calabasas, California.Publisher's website: http://sbprabooks.com/LisaStalvey
