Julian Schnabel macht Kunst aus dem Leben und findet seine Materialien in der Struktur des Alltags. Als Regisseur von preisgekrönten Kinofilmen portraitiert er Künstler wie Basquiat, van Gogh und andere subtil-heroische Figuren. Und er baut seinen eigenen Traum von einem venezianischen Palast mitten in New York. "Ich möchte, dass mein Leben in meinem Werk steckt, komprimiert in meiner Malerei wie ein Auto in einer Schrottpresse. Sonst wäre meine Arbeit nur irgendwelches Zeugs", sagt Julian Schnabel. Diese Dringlichkeit zieht sich durch sein Schaffen, ganz gleich, welche Mittel oder Medien der Künstler wählt.
